![]() Topic: [WIP] Tileset - NuvoPosted: 10 January 2013 at 10:26pm |

Hi, I've been working on a tileset for a little while. I was hoping I could get some good feedback on it here.
The bottom-right of the image is sort of a quick mock-up to see how well the graphics work together. I think one of my concerns deals with the grass. I think the texture is fine, but is the transition from grass to dirt and grass to stone a bit too... blurry? I'm considering adding possibly a darker line to pronounce the differentiation. Maybe just to the bottom edges of the grass to make it pop a little bit out from the other ground textures. Any suggestions? Edited by Nuvo - 10 January 2013 at 10:48pm |

Those are literally the nicest stone tiles ever (everything you made out of stone) and I do agree with you on the grass. What I can tell from this piece is that you prefer to work with man-made things(?) and not organic structures (like, you prefer walls and not flora/fauna) because your tree doesnt seem to have a natural foliage: You have made big "sheets" of one leaf, instead of giving the effect of individual leaves (if that makes sense?).
Either way, this looks amazing! |

I think your issue with the transition between the grass and stone is legitimate, I have no idea how I feel about it. I almost feel like the coror choice of the border is what the issue is, but I could be wrong.
And The tree leaves look too wavy, it seems more like a pile of raked leaves rather than tree leaves. Also, the leaves portion is very very round. I would almost say instead of one giant ball of leaves, you should make several smaller leave spheres, then blend them together.

Thanks for the compliments :) I think the fact the stone tiles are higher quality comes from the fact that to this point, I've received a lot more advice on the stone tiles than I have the tree tiles. The tree is actually still in its first iteration. The stone tiles are in their 8th or so . Here's the original, just for perspective.
I did a bit of work on the grass transitions, I tried out the dark line to add depth to it, and I think it worked pretty well. I think I'm going to work on it just a little bit more to add a little more definition. And The tree leaves look too wavy, it seems more like a pile of raked leaves rather than tree leaves. Also, the leaves portion is very very round. I would almost say instead of one giant ball of leaves, you should make several smaller leave spheres, then blend them together.
I followed the advice both of you gave me. I blended a couple of spheres of leaves together and put more work into individual leaf detail. It took a while, I don't think I'm going to do much to the leaves for a while because it was sort of tiring. It still sort of ended up like a large sphere in this iteration, but I think it looks substantially better.
Thank you very much for your critiques :) |

The tree looks a lot better, making it less spherical would be a bonus, but I think for what you're doing it should be alright.
I think the coloring on the borders of the grass is a lot nicer, however, it now raises another issue where they almost look... plastic? I think it's a combination of how the border lines are drawn (it feels like a single continuous line, rather than protruding grass at points) and the shading is specifically on the edges, not on the blades themselves.

It jsut shows how well you respond to C&C.
The tree is looking mcuh better in terms of form, but if I were you i'd get the structure of the spheres dwon, and then pixel the leaves going from the centre of the sphere outwards (if that makes any sense) and make the leaves smaller. Perhaps a tad less contrast on the leaves will make them look more natural. |

Pretty tiles :)
I like a lot of contrast in all pixelart which you overuse in a good way here. At this stage I only dislike those yellow trees...both the colors and the pixelling. |
