Hello,
I'm a game developer and my english isnt the best(sorry for that already, if you are havin trouble to understand). Recently i started to learn how to draw/ do pixel art. I have been checking many tutorials and reading every resource what i can get my hands on. But somehow i can't get the grip of it. I wanna learn how to do pixel art correct and need help for that. If you guys can tell me my mistakes by looking to my art(if you can even call it that)and how should i do things right, i'll be greatful. This is a worm im trying to create for my game but somehow i can't get shading right.. What am i doing wrong? ![]() Edited by Blackmore - 22 September 2014 at 9:25am |

Looks like a fine start. The design is interesting.
The lighting around the eye indicates the light comes from up-left, while on the... legs, it looks like the light comes from up-right. I made a few tests but couldn't make a nice light coming from a diagonal, so I settled for a light coming from straight top. It's usually not the best since it can make things look dull, but this issue doesn't happen when the shape is rounded. I also tried a very minor dither pattern to make the thing look less plastic, you could say it now looks more like a fruit :) On the right one, I barely added a very few pixels with an extra light color. I think it makes the hightlights 'pop' much more. ![]() Edited by yrizoud - 22 September 2014 at 10:55am |

Thanks! it looks like i have been doing many things wrong , i believe its will take a lot of time to fully understand the concept of making fine pixel art.
Those few extra light pixels really does chance a lot on the art. I will keep this one in mind.. It's just i didn't want to use more than 5 colors because almost in every tutorial people kept using only 5 but after seeing this, if it's needed i will use more than that , Thank you! :) |

Just keep practicing and you'll get better and better. Post your stuff here on on PJ and people will help you. :) |

haa it looks like a peni... never mind. I am also bad at shading so it's nothing bad, just takes "practice". I find that the less colours you use for shading the better it looks (especially on a small sprite like this), but that's just my opinion. Another thing you can try (you don't have to), sketch the drawing onto paper and try your best to shade it how you think it would be shaded. I find it easier than shading from scratch in pixels.
