This is the first draft (very oekaki, cuz thats how I start) of another level for this fighting game. This is a ninja academy tucked in the forest somewhere in Asia. I am hoping to achieve a "dusk" lighting with loads of beamlights coming thru the trees. Pleace c+c about the palette and composition since all else is crap right now.

The sunset is epic.
I don't think that the trees in the back (Left top corner)
Would have so much highlight on them, since the others dont.
I definitly love the scene, but I don't really care for the trees in front.

Souly, I agree but haven't gotten to those type of details yet.

MoD, Yes the architecture is scary now, that will all change. The progremmer gave me a base with the XY coordinates so that I could pixel while they do their magic.

Bifur, waterfall on order and will arrive shortly, thanks for that

That's pretty cool, jalonso! I'll make some crits after some further development.

Is the building gonna be like one of those pagoda/dojo things?

MMmm, the colours are very tasty. You're starting with Oekaki scribbliness? I find that really hard to do. Well, good luck. Can't wait for the next update.

I think the sunset looks more like fire.. cause the lightest hightlights on the trees look sort of like sparks.. I dont know how you'd make it more sun-ish, and it already looks awesome, im just throwing this out there

Whoa. Just whoa. This is already really awesome looking~

My only crit to add would be that the lighting on the rock structure on the right doesn't quite work. The highlights at the top of it shouldn't be there, considering the sun's light is coming from the bottom. Get rid of the top highlights and it should be even more awesome. ;D

I decided to change things around a bit so that this scene matches the rooftop level since they are for the same game. I changed the sunset color palette cuz leel is correct in thinking it looked like a fire was going on and when I looked at it today it seemed that Snow White and her minions were gonna show up any second. the bottom image show the playable platforms, these hopefully stand out enough for easy play. So.... let me have it, you all did great c+c with the other one.

the platforms are pretty easily recognizeabe, except the tiny one near the waterfall (the lowest of the 3)

that waterfall looks damn gorgeous by the way.. is it animated?

I see that now that you mention it, I'll make a bigger rock there. For now the backgrounds are not animated. Except they are talking about doing something called Parallex? (thanks Ensellitis) where things move somehow

EDIT: typos

Parallex is where the backgrounds scroll at different rates in order to create the illusion of depth. Eg, the furthest background (say the sun and horizon) would move very slowly, whilst closer objects (such as a sign or plant) would move faster.

It's used a lot in platformer games, and generally demands a different type of work from the artist (because things are done in seperate looped layers, not just one big object).

This is looking real perdy, by the way Jalonso. The first image you posted definately had a more atmospheric feel.

The others seem a bit cold and lifeless, especially due to the flat shading used in parts such as the buildings. Which may make the interactive backgrounds stand out from the distant ones, but they simply don't match the level of detail found in the beautiful waterfall and rock scene.

I'd also tighten some of the shading. It feels a little random in some parts.

Overall nice work! I'm looking forward to seeing this art progress mate!

i dont think this one matches the other one.

the city one used black lines for everything and this one seems very
real. this also seems a bit more scrappy.

I don't think the house matches the rest at all. It's way different, and uh, with less detail. Are you going to make the laterns on the ground more discernable as well?

Awesome background. But the waterfal looks a bit odd. I'd look at Gas13's waterfall. He did a really good one.

ummph.... seems there's been a drought in the forest. This BG needs to match the other game level so hopefully this better matches the style. I have much detail work do here but please nitpick it.

For the very first BG, I think it would have looked better if you used darker colours for the sunset (it wouldn't look like bright fire) and either get rid of the little pixels for the highlights or lengthen them so they're not individual.

Loving the red background! Gives an awesome theme. I think the waterfall's problem is that it's too 'puffy' and lacks speed. i think you should give it more relation to the red background now.

NICE.  I this is my favorite of the series so far.  The red on the roof seems to merge with the background a bit in some areas, but it doesn’t really bother me to much, I feel as though that’s what would happen naturally.  You may want to add some red/orange-ish high lights on the rocks in the foreground though just for consistency.   Very nice work so far, im intrested in see the final image.

Holy crackpants, batman.

My only crits are the rock beside the house isn't as highlighted as the closer rocks, and therefore looks outta place. And the waterfall doesn't look like a waterfall. The old waterfall was better.

The midshade on the platform tile rocks is hardly noticable, if at all. I suggest either upping the contrast on it or ditching it.

I was too in awe to critisise last time, but i think you could do with warming up and de-lightening the colour of the highlight for the rocks, as it really isn't working for me. Quite alot of places could do with some softening aswel, unless you were looking for the sharper feel (which i guess would go better with your other scene).

Thanks guyz. I have refined/de-scrappyfied most of it now and began animating the waterfall.

And these are the first draft for the UI. This game will have very diverse scenes, the next one is a club interior, so c+c on this would be awesome. I was going for a retro-futuristic submarine look

EDIT: The sprites are not made by me, and the spriter will hopefully fix to my BGs.

This might not be a big deal, but the character sprites seem to blend in with the backgrounds..  But the background themselves look magnifiscent!
