Love the play on words.  Well, anyways, Thought I would make a topic for us programmers to talk about some aspects of programming.  So first question, what languages do you know?  This can also include Flash ActionScripting .

I know the following languages:
Visual Basic 6.0
ASP
Javascript
HTML/XHTML/XML

I know a little bit of ActionScript and Basic, but since I haven't used either languages in quite a while I've forgotten most of it...
I also used to know Robotic, the language used in Megazeux, but again: I haven't used it in a long time so I've forgotten nearly everything. Stupid memory.

Once you program a little bit you'll see that most common languages all work from the same "base" and are pretty easy to learn. Learn a language based on Basic, Perl and C and you'll be able to pick up almost anything.

  • Basic - Visual Basic, VB.NET, ASP (VB Script)
  • Perl - PHP
  • C - C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, ActionScript

If you are interested in Web Development you have to learn XML, CSS and know everything about HTML.  You also should invest some time learning how to use SQL with MSSQL, MySQL and Oracle to be a real superstar.  And last but not least... learn how to use Regular Expressions.

Spoken like an experience programmer. :)  Here's another question to go along with the first one.  How long have you been programming those languages?

VB6 - 5 Years
ASP - 1 1/2 Years
XHTML/XML/Javascript - a couple months
HTML - 7 years

I know: c/c++/c#, java, cobol, php, perl, (visual)basic

FYI: The "ML"s (HTML, etc.) arn't programming languages. They're markup languages. CSS isn't a language at all, it's just one feature of HTML and hence, isn't a programming language either.

lol, yes Funkapotamus, we know the correct terms for that stuff.  And yet I dont believe that will change anything.  Oh ya, PHP isnt a programming language either, its a server-side scripting language.

Woah now fellas.  Programming is a relative term.  All the techs mentioned above (HTML, CSS, XML) are all used in close relationship with many web programming languages so it's all good.

Programming does wonders if you plan to put your pixel art in games. Which I know many pixel artists here might like. I came here to tone my pixel art, cause I plan on making pixel games..

Right now I have a picross game in the works with a friend, and a couple of my own games. I'd be glad to do a couple of joints with members here. That was another reason I came here for.

I'm not that much of a geek either. Who says I can't pretain a social life and still be cool just because I know a bunch of languages. I hate labels.

Actually, "scripting" refers to the fact that the language isn't precompiled. Perl and PHP are interpreted on the fly and thus are scripting languages. They are still programming languages.

The trait that defines a programming language as opposed to a markup language is the ability to deliberately access memory either directly (ex: assembly) or indirectly (ex: variable). Thus, PHP/Perl/Javascript are programming languages.

It is possible to precompile and otherwise optimize php/perl, but this is besides the point.

No need to argue, but for the sake of simplicity how about we ignore all that hoopajoop and just have some fun progamming/scripting/markup language talk; instead of trying to prove who knows their terms better.

I didn't know that discussing the classification of languages was considered "hoopajoop". I am apprantly mistaken- I was under the impression that such things fell under "fun language talk". It is a discussion about languages after all...

Yes, though so far it has been an introduction into languages as in who can program what, and how they came about programming.  Kinda a beginners session, but if you wanna talk advanced wise then thats kool. :D  No harm no fowl, I guess I misinterpreted your posts.

So, ya, I started breaking myself from Visual Basic, and I am starting to program in REALbasic, very similar but compatible on pretty much all OS's.  I've also been looking at PHP, getting the hang of it, but I dont have any real use for it like I use ASP.  I wished ASP had some of the features PHP had though, it would make ASP ALOT better.

Off the top of my head I'd say I'm pretty proficient in HTML, CSS, Javascript and some PHP, XML/XHTML and would like to become more fluent but as I am not planning on programming for a living, they are not my top priorities, hehe.

I mean, I learned most of those back from between the ages of 11 and 14 and I haven't really gotten back into the swing of things since..  Heh..

I figure I could learn some stuff from you guys, however :)

well XHTML is pretty much a cleaner version of HTML, meaning you have to keep everything in order and close all tags.  And <img src=""> now ends like this <img src="" />, as well as <br> = <br />.  There are some other changes as well.

mIRC scripting (for years, I'm "DukeNukem"), HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, POV-Ray's SDL and PHP. I've been avoiding JS because it sucks, but I'll get to it soon... :|

I also know a tiny bit of C\C++, PERL and Python.

I really wish I was learning more and more but I haven't been very motivated lately....

I can program in the following:

    1. PHP - I prefer the Postnuke API environment. Postnuke has managed to take care of all the things that I feel are important to a basic site... Security, User Management, Sessions, etc...

    2. Java - Minor experience, but understand the basics enough the I feel confident I could pick it up... The packages are what throws me... Haven't programmed enough in it is all...

    3. Visual Basic - I code mainly in VBA right now. Writing custom database apps in Access and custom Word files as well with the ability to jump data between the two... I have Visual Basic Dot Net just waiting to be installed, just haven't had a chance.

    4. C# - I haven't coded (per se) in C# but I have read enough that I feel I could put together a basic program with little hassle.

Those are the programming languages I know of and about... The scripting languages are as follows:

    1. Javascript - I have done alot in Javascript, mainly mouseover effects, some game mechanics stuff for a game I worked on, and some minor image management stuff. I really like Javascript.

    2. Flash / Actionscript - I have read several decent sized books. I understand the concepts, have written some minor code for Flash, my biggest problem so far is knowing WHERE to place your code? I feel comfortable enough that I think I could put together some Class files and basic code for a simple game, but I would be lost as to where to place the actual code! Bleh... still learning...

    3. VBScript - I have done very little as I prefer Javascript, but I have put together minor scripts in VBScript for sites in the past...

Then of course theres...

    1. HTML / XHTML / CSS - I prefer to do things in CSS, but now that I am picking up Pixel art... I think I will have to suspend some CSS in favor of tables so I can use self-created borders and such...

    2. XML / XSL / XSLT / DTD - I have read and studied ALOT of XML, as for putting together XML files... creating XSL / XSLT and DTD files? I have not done so, but I understand the concept and I feel that I could manage to put together what was needed should I come across the need for it.

Now I also am confident and capable in working with the following Database Technologies...

    1. MySQL / SQL - Having worked with MS Access from version 95 to XP I am very confident in writing SQL statements for data manipulation.

    2. Access - If you need Access to do it, most likely I can make it do it... I have built everything from custom applications that I have sold to making game-related packages for managing data from games. I currently have two Data-Apps for the RPG System GURPS. I have a Galaxy Creator that will generate Single to Multiple Suns, the planets and asteroids that orbit those suns, which ones are in the Suns Biosphere meaning they can sustain carbon-based life, etc... It manages the planets and will manage their moons once I complete it.

And that is all I can think of... I like coding, but I also enjoy working with digital art... whether in Pixel-form or other media styles. I have stayed away from commercial products like Flash because my goal was to design webb-apps / games using Open Source languages (like PHP) in order to save clients the cost of purchasing software licenses so they can edit what I create for them...

However, in order to put together some games I am working on, I am forced to learn Flash because it will make alot of the projects just that much easier...

As for working with others on this site? I am wondering why we don't have some kind of Open Source game in the making...

Awww man... Class rock.

But I have to admit... From the 10+ programming classes in various languages that I have been able to attend, I have yet to learn what a class is in a learning-environment. I have picked up classes accidentally on my own. If you want a few tips from a self-proclaimed genius? Here I is... chuckle
