woah, I never imagined that the new look (and eggs) would lead to 65
replies in 6 days. thanks all! my Team ( and me ) will try hard to deliver a pixel
game you'll all love. and ofcourse there will be very many easter-eggs
in it to search for.
the next update will follow soon... was in miniature painting craze since 2 days, and will finish my model tomorrow, so there should be plenty of time to implement another easter. :) Edited by Squirrelsquid - 05 November 2007 at 6:42pm |

When finished I look forward to mastering the real game here. We need more pixel art shmups not the new prerender sh*t (DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou) and Mars Matrix. Sprite artists are in a bind due to the high resolution screens. Nobody wants to make scenes with detailed images so they just use scaling with prerendering and sprite anti-aliasing.

I wouldn't know a single shoot em up that did it this way, so we are doing it ![]() if anybody wants to read more of the gamedesign, business-issues and general progress be sure to check out the TIG source forum where I'll be keeping a topic with (almost) every gameplay-aspect of the game covered http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=680.0 Edited by Squirrelsquid - 05 November 2007 at 10:45pm |

Honestly I wish you the best of luck. You have some balls using sprites that good with all the sprite ripping crooks about. I think sprite rippers are the main reason why I haven't made many raster games.
Have you posted a topic at Shmup-Dev? I think you may have, but these updates would warrant some notice! Edited by Pixel_Outlaw - 05 November 2007 at 10:44pm |

yes ripping, fraud and cracking are some aspects that we will adress...
we haven't fully decided on how to handle such aspects. we might have
an interesting model with a regular 6 level version that does not
feature story or voice overs that might be free for everyone, as well
as an Extended version, that features full story, characters and voice
overs, as well as additional stuff like a logbook, commentary and more,
that you'd have to pay for. You (might) get this as a CD in a DVD box
if we can dig up a deal that's worth it.

i would suggest encryption ( make your own file format ). I would also suggest making it shockwave as it is harder to rip but u would need a shockwave player , it wouldnt be practical and wouldn't look professional and u cant use it on consoles(obviousley). www.gamedev.net has always been there for me when stuck in a mess. Try the forums or articles.

Well you can't help people ripping and cracking it because that's pretty much what crackers do. You're best chance is to make your game awesome and negotiate a Steam release using a keycode.

encryption is a good thing... Shockwave ain't IMO.For one, because we have a DirectX coder and not a shockwave coder, and 2. we want to deliver a product of professional quality, and Shockwave games, no matter how good they are, are often marked as "cheap" by many customers.
A Steam release might be a good idea, if it isn't too expensive. And, yea we'r planing to make this game as awesome as Shoot em ups get :) Edited by Squirrelsquid - 07 November 2007 at 6:45am |

I guess the price would depend on both the quality of the game. Like if the game is only 6 levels then I guess that might be a little short depending of course on the length of each level.
PS. You guys better go and copyright your stuff asap :P |

there are 6 levels each about 3 minutes long + 2-5 minutes for the boss,
and a Challenge mode with 50 challenges, along with the logbook that keeps track on all Enemies you've seen (and how often you killed them), additional infos on the game's story, technology and everything else worth mentioning. There will probably be more content, but we haven't decided on that matter yet. So it might sound short, but by comparing shoot em ups, you'll notice, that pretty much all of em are pretty short. ( a 3 minute long level is already quite long compared with other shmups). The point is, to get even that far on your first playthrough. A normal player should not be able to beat it, the first time he plays it. also, there will be variouse possibilities to tune your ship and dropship. and besides: HZ is a score shooter... you'll always try to top your score, and try to "chain like a maniac". It's just like with Ikaruga, or any other good shoot em up: Play it again, again and again, because it is just fun to play. and about the copyright: all of my team-mates including me are living in germany, so the german "Urheber-recht" automaticly takes effect. the Urheber-recht automaticly gives only the initial creator the publishment rights. ( unless you give them away, via a contract) I know someone that is working in the copyright business, so I'll ask her soon, what steps would be good in protecting the code, music and art. Jal is right... and besides I have posted these graphics all over the
web, AND in my gallery... so there is hardly a way, to let someone else
say:
"ITZ MIN3! I M/\D€ THE GFX! L00k I'm making a game called ret@rd zone!" if that happens I'll hunt him down with my TAF RX-Cerberus and blow his house up or something... anyway, here's a loong read. ( i hope it is fun to read as well) The Alien Menace evolves at first, the omnivore, where not even called omnivore, but carnivore. back then I was developing the graphics and gamedesign for a swedish mobile phone company. it only featured 4 bosses and a hand full of enemies. but the meaty metal creatures where already there... although most featured real human eyes, like this one: ![]() you'll probably right away notice differences with the X-static bellow: ![]() the new enemys all got more metal shades as well as the Eye of sauron thing. there's not a single one without it, even the smallest has it, to get an even look for the alien race. at a certain point during the graphic production, I expanded the material-collection with a bone-material, that you can see in the mockup. I'll introduce more materials to the creatures if there is new materia they can fuse themself with. if there are asteroids, they will fuse with asteroids and fly towards you,if they infect a plant, the plant will mutate and shoot at you. the omnivore are driven soley by the desire to fuse, reproduce and destruction. They have a collective mind, but only small creatures rely on that heavily, making them rather predictable. They can shift dimensions and actualy attack with small dimensional worm-holes. It is uncertain from wich dimension the Omnivore originated. it is clear however, that they invaded our world through a dimension classified as "Lazarus Dimension", where they aquired lots of DNA and abilities from a highly technical race known as the "insert fancy name here". Eventualy the omnivore devoured all materia in this universe, so they searched out for new dimension to feed from. At some point the Colonization ship Fenrir reached planet Cronos, and received the construction-plans for space-folding technology via EXO-link. - EXO-link was an early spacefolding technology, that got discovered by the famous physics Scientist and engineer "Dr. Pavel Pipovich", who is also on board the Leviathan. He will analyze emies along the way, and will create new equipment and tools while in flight. The mentioned space-folding technology was a horrible failure since the scientist crew did not calculate the variouse coordinates correctly, opening a worm-hole from our world to the Lazarus Dimension. you guys can imagine what happens next I guess. now, the new version demands even bigger creatures ( I'll die when there's the milestone with the first boss) so the small ones become tiny, and the otherwise big enemies become medium enemies, and the bosses will be some of the biggest pixel-creatures known to man, so I thought it would be wise to draw ideas for enemies in my "survival book" first, along with a short written description. only if I like the selout and the shapes, I will scan it in, and do a quick coloring in photoshop, that looks like this one: ![]() the "restless soul" is very hard to destroy, since it automaticly goes into standby mode when it low on health, recharging itself once shut down. if the player doesn't destroy it, it will reactivate with full health, and will start attacking again. you can use this to your advamtage too though, since you always rais your chain and get the score of the enemy, when it goes into standby. that's all rants for now, hope you had an interesting read. ![]() (new mockup with infected cerberus, using a dimensional shield) EDIT: the sketch was missing... did a mod edit my post because of the NPA? if so, I apologize, and the image can be removed again. Crit: the mandibley-wingy bits look beautiful, but rather flat. They look directly top-down while the rest doesn't. Try and bulk them out some.

The Wing-blades are made out of Bone, one of the materials, that an Omnivore organism can produce, without the need to fuse with materia.
And, I currently have no idea where in the game this enemie will be... but it will probably be in the first public demo. Edited by Squirrelsquid - 20 November 2007 at 4:57am |
