Mini-tut for antialiasing; much more approachable imo than my old, advanced + technical tutorial; This one is just about rendering AA in a basically sound way.
(Based on a post I made here) In brief, antialiasing is a way of approximating sub-pixel shapes; the most common (and best looking) of these shapes is a triangle which spans from one 'stair step''s outer corner to the next 'stair step''s outer corner. This means that at one corner, the opacity is 0%, at the other corner the opacity is 100%. See this illustration: ![]() Anti-aliasing in pixel art approximates that opacity gradient with the available colors (see the version just to the right of the top left corner.) Curving modifies what opacities are appropriate (see the top-right corner of the magnified pic; it's corrected for curving); but mostly, triangular AA looks best and you hardly ever need something that is very different from triangular AA. Just antialias triangularly along vertical, horizontal, and diagonal (45 degrees) steps, for a start. |

lol I like 4 more than 5.. stupid computers! yes, although arguably the computer's rendering is more circular. its hard to see the difference between 3 and 4.. I think you could delete step 3.. Maybe it needs some text: 1. Un-antialiased 2. Diagonal AA 3. Vertical and Horizontal AA 4. Diagonal inner AA |

Since I've emailed robotriot about updating AAC to calculate antialiasing colors correctly, and not yet received a reply, I will quote my mail here to help people be aware of this issue:
---- Hello. As far as I know, your program AAC calculates antialiasing colors wrongly. http://mymentalray.com/wiki if you read points #1 and #2 of 'Gamma 101' on the above page then you will understand why. Accounting for gamma is fairly simple: rather than using the formula (a + b) / 2 to calculate the antialiasing instead: divide by 255 so each input color is in the range 0..1 exponentiate by 1/2.2 (ie. .454545454545) calculate the intermediate value (ie. (a+b) / 2) exponentiate by 2.2 multiply by 255 For example, interpolating between black #000000 and white #FFFFFF, the correct result (that is, the color that is at the midpoint of those two colors, according to a human eye), is #bababa rather a large difference from the uncorrected interpolation that your program produces #7f7f7f I know AAC is an old hack (putting it in 'trash' directory makes that clear), however since it's still linked (from Pixel Joint) and I expect people still use it, could you take the time to update it to be correct? Personally I spent a long time being confused about color behaviour on computers until I learnt about gamma from this article: http://www.4p8.com/eric and I hope that updating AAC could help save some people from that kind of confusion. --- (email ends) Note: Getting the best results depends on having a well calibrated monitor -- see http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ for LCD gamma calibration. However, regardless of whether viewers have well adjusted monitors, accounting for gamma when calculating intermediate colors will significantly improve the quality of color choices and the resultant picture. Antialiasing becomes a lot more sensible and easy to do, too :) |
