Ok, I'm a little late to the party but I'm hoping to get a little c&c, particularly on the first two, which are mostly done.

@ Peelz, I'm wondering what's that sticking out of the mage's mouth. The start of a pipe? His beard is great - nice movement. Warrior has good, beefy features. Perhaps his posture is a bit off. I get that it's a disco pose but how does the perspective work with the rest of the characters?

I had the same problem:

Took me a while to figure out the final composition, and to be honest I'm still not set on it. Anyway just food for thought.

----

above image is, again, close to done and I welcome/encourage any C+C. Trying to nail down my warrior:

I like the halberd but as an upright weapon it looks redundant with the mage's staff being so close to it. Ideally he'd have a sword, but BOY is it hard to make a diagonal blade and have it look good. May change it to an axe. Again, comments welcome.

P.S. @ Peelz, I think your creature has the most potential. Something out of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. I look forward to seeing it done.

It's Saturday already?! Pooh, I put this off too long, don't think I'll have time to finish. :(

That warrior and dog are amazing, especially for isometric sprites. One of the best iso sprites I've seen at that size. Kudos! You've gotten so much better compairing to some of your previous stuff.

@Dastal: the backbag thing of the goblin could be a bit darker, I guess it'd look better if you remove there the lightest tone. Also the perspective of the warriors shield seems a bit strange (compared with the arm).

@Delicious: yeah I am also thinking I improved a lot.

the witch and the thief were the sprites I did in a more half-assed way and I had also in mind overworking them a bit what I did now.

@Peelz: A great idea! My favourite till now. Althugh it took me a while to notice the arms of the mage.

@newGuy: There is this kind of "long" straight horizontal line in the silhouette of the thief's hair. It makes it look wierdly geometric. Maybe pull the curvature youv'e to the right of it a bit more to the left or something.
I like the colors and the inventors pose is great, sitting on the floor, scratching his head, you know it's the inventor just from the pose, very nice.

@Peelz: Love the warrior. Afros are awesome. =D
The mage's arms seem a bit short, and the rose in his mouth is hard to make out, not sure how to change that though.. maybe make it the only thing with a black outline in that area.. dunno.

@failureboy: This is probably purely subjectiv because I like pole arms =), but I'd go with the halberd. ...hm, maybe change the staff instead to just a blue orb if you don't want two upright items.

I tend to choose mostly dark colors and not notice, so first I fixed the palette. Sketched the rest of the party, so I'm currently going for mage, warrior, healer, creature.
Mage is final I guess, got a bit more volume into him by shading him more like I would Paint und completely dropping the outline approach.
Warrior seems a bit blurry compared to the mage, will try adding more contrast to the details.
I prefer the left Helmet but I can't get it quite as readable as I'd like it to be. Not sure about the shields.
Breast plate.... I don't even know what to say, complicated.
Critique is always welcome. =D

P.S. RUNNING OUT OF TIME! AAHH!!

This is my first foray into a contest, and really the site in general. I've lurked a lot, and tried to pick up techniques. I don't expect to place, but I need the practice.
Here's what I will submit unless I get some suggestions.

@Levaunt Real nice undead chars, great concept. I'd give more attention to the shading of the ribs, though.

@PaTheGrub Wow, that mage kicks some serious ass.

Alright, not quite polished as I wish it was, but guess that's how I'm submitting it:

TWO QUESTIONS FOR ANYONE, NOT RELATED TO MY ART:

- Imageshack.us
It would appear that if you don't subscribe for their service, you only get a limited amount of space with which to save art. One of my above pieces just went awol, and I can't figure out why (the thumbnail on the site disappeared). So I assume I'll wanna pay for the service? I guess another question is if anyone here has a suggestion on where/how to save artwork for free. I assume facebook doesn't do that (at least, in my limited research I couldn't figure out how to get a direct link). Sorry for the dumb question but I'm new to this.

-As far as submitting art, the rules ask that we only submit FINISHED pieces, and yet some of the entries that have been submitted have already a) been commented on and b) been changed post-submission. All I'm wondering is if there's some etiquette I should be aware of? The feedback here has been great, but some of the feedback in the submitted areas is good too (it's about getting as much good feedback as possible :D)

--

@Cyamgmou, the only problem I have with your piece is that the thief's sword sort of looks like his belt sash, at least from a distance.

@PaTheGrub, I agree the top helmet reads the best, although if you use it you should change the direction so that the warrior is looking in the same place as everyone else. I also like the top shield the best. As for the rest I sympathize. Nail down the rest of his armour and then go back and simplify the breastplate, work on the pixel clusters, it seems to never end sometimes, I know. Also, I'd say don't worry about making his sword glow if you're running out of time. The creature is great.

@Levaunt, that's a really cool theme. I'm sure you'll get some votes. Maybe add an arm to the mummy. Good simple shadow effect.

imageshack will be just fine without having to pay for anything. Just don't use as an online portfolio or anything. Use it strictly for uploading WIPs for others to see. Once you've finished a piece of work, then delete them all from the imageshack website and get your space back for the next WIP you work on. PixelJoint will keep the art you actually want to leave on here for free.

Thanks, Airstyle. So I'll just start deleting images starting from the earliest Wips until I have enough space. Good to know.

Why do I even continue?

I can't even come close to not coming last.

Besides, having my art next to Delicious or Sergiotron would just be embarrassing.

It still doesn't hurt to try. I know I can't compete with those guys either, but attempting to do so increases my own pixel-pushing prowess. Instead of trying to win, I use it as a learning experience, so I can get C&C from other pixel artists. Do the same. Then, once you find that you've established your own style of pixel-pushing, treat them as a competition. It will be healthier then...

@Airstyle: Well said!

@failureboy: I was having some trouble with the arm, but I'll give it another go.

@newguy: Thanks, I added a some more depth to them, and they look a lot better.

Here's what I have now, I think I may submit this, as there isn't much time left.

Still a WIP, but I have a Healer (far left), mage (center stage), Animal creature (top right), and warrior (right).
Just a bunch of hippies :p
Gotta work on the warrior, and the transparency.

EDIT: Forgot to note that these are Mrmo's colors. (I think) Color right go to him.

Thanks to failureboy, Adam and PaTheGrub for the c&c. I did some editing to the mage's arms and tweaked the rose a bit too. I also finished the rest and really like how it turned out. I've submitted it to the competition so check it out!

This is so not the idea of the challenge. The challenge is for you to hone your skills, the awards are just a taste of competition (sometimes distasteful though) so that people try to do their best. You shouldn't heed too much on who wins. After all it's too easy to cheat and win, if winning is the only motivation.

Baboon Thief (WIP):

:)

@Spot, we are not here for the prize, just for evolve as pixel artists. I have a lot to learn, specially color palettes. That's why my characters are greyscale, but we have to start at some point. Next week I'll look for help here in PJ, and I know I'll get it, becouse here are many awesome artists who understand our learning process and they will be glad to help us. And, as Jalonso said to me: Don't be lazy

The first sprite is done, a warrior with a staff. I'm not sure if I'll manage the other three in time though, but I'll finish even if it's late.
I don't think I've ever made a sprite at this size before, 48x48. 8 colors + transparency.

I made the pet. It's kind of rushed and sloppy though. It needs more darks like the warrior has. There's no way I'll finish in time at this rate since I haven't even decided what the 4th character will be and I've barely started the 3rd.

Well... I'm not gonna make it in time, but I'll definitively finish them. Here's how far I got:

I really dislike the alternative helmet's design, so I guess I'll stick with the less readable one. Fiddled around with the breastplate but couldn't make it work yet.

Creature is still work in progress. It was supposed to be a gemstone/crystal golem but I've yet to learn how to draw and shade crystals so it'll be a whatever-it-looks-like-when-its-done golem. =)

All perfectionism aside I'm very satisfied and actually quite surprised how everything so far turned out.

Thanks for the critique and inspiration everyone!
