I like how parts of the city have different shades of ground colour.
The urns are cool ;)

I don't know how many of these things are still WIP, but:
  1. The tiny green Vincicopter in frame three seems to wrap around too many times, with the tapered ends of the sail both pointing the same direction.
  2. The set of stairs in frame six seems to be just a sticker, and doesn't really seem to be 'let into' the ground.
  3. The bell tower of frames 7&10 gets lost in the surrounding roofs. (I swear I didn't notice it was there until I squinted to admire the roof tiles - brain sees what it expects to see I guess. A swift but probably BS solution: do you have enough colours to put some more of a lighting glow on the tower, as if it were bathed in a soft light?)
  4. Do you think that the level count should go up as the frames sequence, to suggest game progress as you read them, or did you purposely make them randomly assigned?
  5. What is that little 64 in the bottom right corner of frame eleven? It doesn't look very finished imo.
  6. Why is there a strange red square around Mona? ;)
  7. In frame thirteen, you now have new flat rocks that break up the ground occasionally, and I love them, but whereas your boulders were lit from above and look correct (we expect to see light above and shadow below, which is why when moon craters do the opposite they look like domes), these are lit from below and also don't look very flat with the ground (they're a great detail though, that the scene definitely benefits from).
  8. The blue gear in frame fourteen looks like two different sizes welded together, and seems to be an oval shape rather than circular, and I'm afraid that the purple light on it doesn't look very good, sorry!

  9. Wow, you almost wouldn't think I love this more than life itself, or my collection of plastic Smurf figurines.

All new sprites and new purple poop.
@Ninja,
1- remade
2- hehe, it does. Fixed?
3- sunlight tower
4- levels are not very random at all. They all correspond to the cane/staff and frame 2 will be the boss dialog screen so that's a high number.
5- Added the Botany badge
6- Showing its a tiny Mona Lisa painting :p
7- Making ground again. I hate all grounds >:(
8- It is an optical illusion on your part but I tweaked it.

Hmm...
   1. I liked the conical basket of the first one, and now the upper sail tip appears to be higher than the central mast - I like the rightside sail tip, though.
   2. Nope, the top step appears to be tiled, and so seems at the same level as the ground, yet there is some kind of white outline that I'm interpreting as a raised border that would put the step higher, so it's fighting in my brain....
   3. Ooo, nice! But now it's shorter! There needs to be a bit of light gradating down on the next levels down, too, I think.
   4. Yes, I just wondered if the pictures would be sorted in level order, though that may not be as aesthetic.
   5. Wuts a botany badge?
   6. ;)
   7. What did you do to it? I only thought the stony ground showing through the grass needed to be relit? And there's way too much pink - the blue tiles were perfect, please retain them!
   8. That gear is much more shapely, thanks, but the purple lighting still looks to me like an alpha layer that has been cut in half so as to only cover the top of the gear. Maybe a pinker specular that only lights the edges and not the flats? (he says with little real clue....)

Eh...
   9. The Leo sprite maybe needed some more forehead, but now he looks like a bubble-headed freak? (you did say harsh crits right? Right?)
   10. I <love3 the people in the city!

@Ninja, on the list for next update, thx :)

New screen.
This is the big boss, Lorenzo Medici. Leonardo wrote in one of his journals that this guy 'made him and then destroyed him'... a boss, if ever there was one. Didn't even try to make him look like the paintings cuz he looks different in both and other than having a big nose, it doesn't matter.

Although objectively I think he's snarling, my mind is having a hard time reading anything but a closed mouth with a milk moustache.

still needs a bit of upper lip (chin has enough room to just move the whole mouth down a bit), still reading as a milk mustache here.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

I like the portrait of Medici, and didn't see a milk moustache (heehee), but his expression/face has more the look of a pirate or gangster than a haughty, wicked aristocrat, and his clothing reads more as simple merchant than resplendent lord. Medici's nose is rather large and aquiline, but it's narrower than you've depicted it here, which might be contributing to the gangster vs. nobleman look.
'Course, if ya want him to be a buffoon (he's even holding something that looks like the classic vulgar ruler's prop of gnawed-on turkey leg!), that's fine, too!

Ninja, I can't help that's what he's wearing. I did add the gold buttons just for you :)
That's a scroll with an invention he's holding... an invention that 'is utterly useless'.

Update, following C+C

You're right about the clothing, of course - maybe it just wasn't royal red enough for me - but that's a clever thing with the buttons.

Hey it looks wonderful! I would say if you still wanted (on that nice new face) some of that really cackling-evil look, by having a sneer that the nose can overlap, you could make the tip of his nose a bit longer - which I believe the portrait supports.

I also am glad it was a scroll he's holding - and it looks like one now, except that the top half is a bit too shiny.

You are a one-man, graphics-making machine (maps & sprites & portraits & items & menus & & &) I am truly impressed.

New layout, 3 screens removed for being pointless.
Less 12 colors.
New pointier nose on Medici.
More work on title screen.
Green areas to be re-pixelled from scratch.

omg ?! repixeled from scratch?! all the builings, why? they were beautiful! also why did u remove da vincis home screen? i think it was a nice idea, i always liked it in games if u have like a home to come to, for example the starting point, (where the yoshis live i guess) in super mario world....
the medici emblem in the title screen looks a bit out of place imo, maybe more realistic, like rusted metal or so

@ kenpokis. I hate making ground tiles and think I fail so thanks :)

@ Those who took the palette from page 1.
Palette now  refined to 77 colors.

This update has 49 less colors \o/
Almost done now since I'm kinda over it.
If you've been seeing something and didn't mention it cuz you thought I would catch it. Now is the time to say so.

the shading in the water of the fountain is off, it  makes it look like it's paralel too instead of extending from the wall. i'd suggest higlighting/shading more evenly over the whole plane.

also... holy sh*t, this is awesome.

Good catch! I truly hate this 'half this-half that' perspective. It so confuserating.

Wow, I'm overwhelmed! (can't seem to get the refrain from Itchycoo Park out of my mind, so:)
It's all too beautiful!

The only thing left that I notice is that Leo needs an ear, and may benefit if his chrome dome specular were off center (like the old man at the bottom of frame eleven) other than that, he actually is pretty cute!

I wish I could say more than just "great job, man!" but I hope it's enough!

Great job, man!

You really could make a great game out of this. With all the work you've got in it, you could probably take it to a developer and get something going.

This is epic! 8D

only crit i have is the text box on the medici one, the scene visible through the box doesn't match mainly a corner issue, one would expect the corners to be there but in the text box it seems like the room continues downward,
other than that everything looks really nice!

the new optimized palette is awesome too \o/ definitely an awesome portfolio piece, and i would so play that if it was ever released @_@ looks better than some of the commercial games around imo,

and it would be at home on a DS or GBA (hard to actually make for because of strict licensing) or SNES ,

there are games being released on older consoles around like this indie Genesis/Megadrive game Pier Solar where they actually manage to purchase blank carts and ship the game commercially well its not shipped yet but you get what i mean, not sure if it is more difficult to release a game on the SNES without getting in trouble from nintendo they always tend to have some fairly annoying licensing situations back then and now.

even just good ol' PC and if you did find someone committed enough to program it that would be awesome, you could always try and market to a developer, or try finding a team and try get the licensing fee aside and make an iPhone App that would sell pretty well me thinks. i want to see a fully fledged playable 100% bonafide game made from your art because you got an insane amount skill/talent and I among most everyone else wants to play them... and if not well we can always dream~

thx Grimsane. That text box is from a previous room when it did continue downward. I totally missed that but will change it.

so... title screens tend to be simple and clean as a general rule.
That said A or B ?

A - would have torn edges on the left and right side.
B - I generally like this better but since the title is 'DaVinci Journals' it seems like a having a single page doesn't make too much sense and including books or a quill or anything else is OTT.

I only have one point of critique since it's been bothering me (just read the whole topic).

What's with the 3rd item on the velvet (2nd screen)?

Is it supposed to be an impression? An item? Because to me it seems like a combination of both. If it's an impression, make it an impression. It just looks like a purple item on the velvet.

Without me, it's just aweso

they both look solid, i find the first one to look a bit too simple with the monotone parchment but the composition is good.

and to be honest i thought the second one was a map at first glance took me awhile to realize it was actually the Vitruvian man on parchment, only really realized after reading your objection to B being the single page from his journal, but yeah i thought it was a map, you know implying his adventure/journey through the country or whatever I thought you actually intended that lol, and it reminded me of indiana jones for some reason,

maybe combine the 2
actually make the parchment a map, but that would make the vitruvian man absent unless, sorry for the really poor edit

, you somehow introduce him into the image without making it too cluttered.

but to be honest i think they look pretty decent already probably lean toward A if it wasn't the single tone parchment and second one is effective besides the "single journal page" flaw, which seems a little on the pedantic side, so if you aren't going to alter either I'd pick B ^^

i definitly like the old one better, tho, ur right about the singel page thing... why not add a few underneath?... anyways, the shading and the colors on the new one rly look like plastic, with isnt rly suited i guess... i still dont like the emblem too much, there hasnt changed anything anyway... i think i would be nice to actually do something more realistic, like a metal shield or stuff, maybe leaning back perspectively since the left part looks a bit flat and empty still , i know ur going for simplicity but yeah... "the davinci journals" - text needs aa badly but i think thats wip

Indeed, you are right. However, DaVinci's work doesn't lend itself to literal interpretations like Dali and Bosch did. Most of his work is drawings on parchment and are not very colorful. His paintings also do not lend themselves well to video game versions. The Last Supper with the people in it looked silly. I did however add the Last Supper room as a screen and included a tiny version in the studio screen along with most of his better known works, if a bit small.
___

I'm finishing this piece and will post soon to the gallery with these updates:
• ears on sprites
• Title screen without shield cuz onek is not happy
• all new doors and entrances to match this crazy perspective
• Whole areas recolored to better suit the final optimized palette
• lots of other tweaks
• missing wand impression better defined as a missing inventory piece
___

*I am no closer to resolving the Picasso SHMUP in my mind, so this whole thing was a waste of time

I'm a pretty average programmer and the fun fact for the day is: tile based programming is much harder than platformer programming. I'll make a little poo game for you with pixel art just so you can see. Might take a while to do the pixel art though. Only good with pencil mediums because I'm an animation student. I only use the wacom to trace/clean my line art.
