Brilliant theme. I'm looking foward to see them animated. :)
Also, it's a fantastic band, one of my favorites. |

This is what I have so far, which is, of course, far from done.
![]() I dunno if I'll be able to pull it off with just 6 colors (the blue isn't in the palette because it's the background color), and with the current look. Inspired by/based on this: http://i.imgur.com/j26MbYbl.jpg ((EDIT: The [url] tag seems to disappear for an unknown reason when I try to use it... sorry, you'll have to copy the reference link manually.)) Does the number of colors that I used matter?! I means I can't limit my art in the range of 20! But if you want I can try...

You cannot enter the challenge with more than 20 colors. But 20 is a decent amount of colors. Post your WIP here and maybe you will get some advices on how to optimize your palette. |

If you like to pixel you have to be able to do so with limited colors. Its been proven countless times that color limitations do not affect art, concept, visuals and imagination. |

I haven't done any challenges lately on here so I wanted to give this a try. In Tennessee they drop a music note for new years, I'm trying to make something like that. Here's my progress so far, still gotta add fire works and stuff lol

I've been trying different pixel art styles, and this is one of my experiments. I'm not sure how it turned out but it's a group of 3 pixels lighting tiny pixel fireworks. I kinda missed the "in the sky" part of the title.

I didn't see your post, Storm. I really like... well, everything, honestly. I wish I had some advice to give you but everything looks very polished so far.

I've got another revision here:
![]() I changed the flight of the blue one so it looked a bit more consistent through its flight, changed the way he jumped away from the blue one, fixed a few jumps, and a few other small things. |

I like the simplicity of the foreground, Different. But I do kind of feel like the background could have one or two extra colours without spoiling the simplicity of that piece. A cityscape, a small house, a tree, just... something.

Here's my WIP:
![]() I'm not sure how well the whole thing is reading; I'm wondering what you all think of my palette, and, more importantly, the layout. I'm a little frustrated because the child isn't really standing out like I'd imagined and the something just isn't working about the design. I feel like it's just a bit dark and muddled. I'm considering changing it to a very wide and thin or very tall and thin canvas, and I feel like I need a bit more of a dynamic perspective. Thoughts? |

@Zamaj: Very nice idea, I like it a lot. It's definitely dark and muddled. The child isn't standing out because it's just a black shape with 5 pixels highlighted. If you apply the reflected light more liberally, then this piece will certainly come into its own.
The size and position of the buildings seem a bit random to me. I can't tell if they're in the middle of a street or in some open plaza. |

All right, I've reworked the background and added more rim lighting to the child.
![]() I'm liking this much better, I think I'll continue with this design. |

Update:
![]() hmm I redone the fireworks a tad so they blend in with the sky more and I'm working on finishing the sky at the moment. |

Here's my WIP (I may just turn this in):
Preview: ![]() Image: ![]() I am a child. The only thing I'm worried about is that the firework is hard to read on the background and since that's the whole point of this challenge, I feel like I should work on it more. Thoughts? |

@shadow; you could as well make the fire work red or something.

@Gecimen: Good point, I'll give it a shot. Shouldn't increase the color count since the green is only used in the firework right now.
@Jalonso: Yeah, I'm still working on my understanding of color theory... :\ I'll try messing around with it, but do you have any suggestions or places I should start? |

I actually don't really get what's happening on the picture. A wizard is sitting on the toilet watching the fireworks...against a concrete wall?
I like the robe and the legs, though. Maybe you could try just having the wizard sitting on the toilet, and then all of a sudden the whole room goes bang, with red/orange lights so that it reads as if there was a window in front of the wizard and a firework had just exploded through it. That way you could even get rid of the firework itself and I don't think it'd go against the challenge rules, or would it? |

@Kuznetsowski, Actually the fireworks are coming FROM the wizard... I'll try to make that clearer, too.

He's pooping. And because he's a wizard, there is fireworks coming from the toilet bowl. I think it's a nice idea, I'm rarely opposed to some good old fashioned toilet humor. It's just the execution that is lacking. Get rid of the dithering alltogether, increase contrast, brighten up the face (or lower the hat if you want the face hidden in shadow) and get rid of the gradient on the blue booths... that's my humble advice anyway.
@Zamaj: Much better! Looking forward to seeing the final version. The dad needs broader shoulders, IMO. @xinoivsionix: I rather like this. Very abstract. But the skull needs a lot of work, I think. Edited by CELS - 03 January 2014 at 3:33pm |

Thanks CELS! I'll try those tweaks and see what happens. Really appreciate all the feedback I'm getting - hope I can fix it. :)

I took CELS's advice and added a cityscape and some clouds in the background, and added a sparkle/explosion/thing to the 3rd firework. I'm probably going to end up removing the clouds or making them a shade lighter. Any feedback?

Thanks for the help CELS, I assumed you were talking about the dithering on the bricks so I did my best to still give is some nice shadow, but took it out. I also took out the top portion so that this bathroom is outside so you can see it against the sky:
Original: ![]() Updated: ![]() I lightened his face and some of his robe for better contrast as well. Any further thoughts? I still have 3 colors left so I might try doing another firework or having him shake a bit before the firework launches to be a better indication that it's a fart. |

@Shadow64, maybe he could raise a bit his left leg so that it's clear that it's a fart, rather than having him shake (which would be probably more time-consuming).
I also would suggest going crazy on the firework itself because right now it looks like a very discrete/subtle fart and I'm assuming that if someone has fireworks coming out of their ass when pooping, they gotta be some heavy fireworks lol. The updated version looks much better :D |

Good call on the lifted leg and crazy fireworks. I'll be doing some work on it today, but I think it'll be the last I work on it - deadline is just getting too close for comfort unfortunately.
And thanks! Yeah, CELS's notes were crazy helpful. My piece was just too busy before, his thoughts cleared it up a lot! |
