I have no idea how to use those colors.
And I have no idea whether I can finish on time. But I did have an idea. So... (should I be linking out for ![]() I think I need to cut back on the dithering, but I still have to figure out how it's done with that palette. D: |

i thought i would make soemthing for this. so i wantewd to make something original so to define what original was in this case i use google to help me.
so i decided no x-men characters, definitily no monsters inc as that was the main thing that came up. and yeah no giant monster kind of things then looking at that piece above by tomic with the whole moon as the cyclops. i thought well my countries in a water crysis at the moment so lets do a game mockup to join both water saving and a cyclops. so here is what i have so far: ![]() i'm having trouble with the background because seperating the top part of platform from the background is becoming hard. hmm any suggestions i'm using the top right palette. as it allowed for better tones between characters and platforms. also creating a good background at the same time as seperating all elements has become even harder. i think black was one of the main ones that they used, but i think for this challenge they just choose any color from the bunch. i don't think alot of thought was put in because looking at what they had to choose from they could have done way better.

All of the challenge options are valid CGA palettes. Each CGA palette must consist of 3 colours + an extra background colour, which can be selected out the remaining colours from the 16 available. Black is very frequently used as the background colour, but it is not required.
None of the palettes include black for this very reason. I am interested to see what can be created without the option of using black. @x-death, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on which valid palettes, that do not include black, would be "way better" for this challenge. Personally, I think that all four of the provided palettes are both challenging and interesting. |

well i was thinking if black was included, but i'd figure numbers 1 or 9 for the first then something like 4,6 and 14 for the rest. might have been ok. to be honest i think i was only disappointed because i liked my rain drop cyclops idea i have above but there were very litttle palettes that made the drop look good. or well in my eyes. so i had to make a pink rain drop. and i don't know about anyone else but a pink rain drop to me just looks crap.
also those numbers are the ones on the color display from that link A.B. lazer provided |

@x-death, Here is an explanation of some of the choices that were made when selecting the four palettes:
I wanted to have a brighter colour for the first palette, leaving the cyan and white as midtone colours. This differs from the other palettes where the two brightest colours are very close together. The other colours could've been possibilities. However, I find that the CGA brown to be fairly repulsive and the 3rd palette was intended to use all four "primary colours" - yellow, green, blue and red. I wanted these palettes to be nice (as nice as CGA can get), but at the same time I wanted to make things a bit interesting. Just keep in mind that this is a challenge and working in less than ideal conditions is all part of that challenge. There is sometimes a lot of problem solving involved, ie. - "what do I have to do in order to achieve what I want under these conditions? Is it possible to get exactly what I want or do I need to approximate" |

RobbieE: the size of the arms seems disproportionate, either make the bicep of the left (as viewed) arm larger, or make the forearm smaller. I like the concept though, I look forward to seeing what you do.

The form is made without logic. If you look closely at teddy bears - those which are really cute have clear construction and design - you can tell that outline of head is round, ears are two smaller rounds, body is bigger round and arms and legs are ovals: http://images.google.com/images You can note that those which are looking better have at the same time simpler geometric figures as basis. Technically, starman has no eyes or no visible eyes at least. It's face, if it even has one, is hidden so there's no real way of telling.

That appears to be more of a visor, rather than an eye per say, same problem the starman had.

well yellow and red are wrmer colors so i wouyld be using them more for your highlights and midtones. and i'd be using green, blue or purple for your shadows. as they are cooler colors.
thats just some basic color theory though. also i think your color count is 5 colors. but challenge only allows 4 as they should be from one of the provided sets. Edited by x-death - 10 March 2009 at 7:22pm |

when you used green and dark blue it made the green seem like cyan. so i thought you grabbed an extra color. my bad.
um yeah you can switch them if you want. its up to you. but you will need to consider how you shade it, with only having a few colors. Edited by x-death - 10 March 2009 at 8:42pm |

that random line art isnt really helping at all to define shapes and therefore shading.
and to remind you that its meant to be creature, a living being with one single eye. reason why xmen's cyclops is not allowed. |

When I read about challenge, one of the first characters that came to my mind was Starman DX from Earthbound. He with his famous visor on the cover of SNES game is iconic cyclopic character, probably derived from that alien Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still. In other words, it seen by viewer only as cyclops, it's moving on it's own, so it fits.
Slicing off robots and statues (golems) has no point as it slices off half of fun with no reason. In art-related community main guideline should be aesthetics, I think, not biology. Basing on what you read and seen in the movies you can tell most of the time if character could be called archetypical cyclops or he just winking. And, still, if robots don't count, then do cyborgs count? Edited by A.B. Lazer - 11 March 2009 at 1:45am |

Actually 10x10 is the minimum size for something to be submitted here.
And since there is no actual minimum size set for the challenge that makes the minimum size technically 10x10, as something can't be submitted any smaller than that anyway. |

I consider this to be my first serious/real pixel art. It's still heavily WIP.. Just a sketch for now. ![]() Any crits? Note: I added extra colors to help me mold, I will be removing them. Also, I just realized it had to be a creature.. However I think I can make this read as a creature in the end. What exactly is defining a 'creature' in this case though? Would the hand with an eye in it be acceptable enough? Edited by Dr D - 12 March 2009 at 2:02am |
