CHALLENGE: CGA Cyclops

You are challenged this week  to create an image using any of the CGA palettes listed below.

The image must include some kind of cyclops. You do not have to make it a 'typical' cyclops, it can be any creature with just one eye. However, it must be clear that the creature does just have one eye.

NOTE: If you were intending to make an image of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclops_%28comics%29 - X-Men character "Cyclops" your piece will NOT be accepted into the challenge as technically that character is not a cyclops.

 Canvas Size - Maximum 320 (width) x 200 (height).
Colours - Exactly 4. Select one of the following CGA palettes:

Transparency - No.
Animation - Optional.

I have no idea how to use those colors.
And I have no idea whether I can finish on time.

But I did have an idea. So...

(should I be linking out for nudity gore?)

I think I need to cut back on the dithering, but I still have to figure out how it's done with that palette. D:

i thought i would make soemthing for this. so i wantewd to make something original so to define what original was in this case i use google to help me.

so i decided no x-men characters, definitily no monsters inc as that was the main thing that came up. and yeah no giant monster kind of things then looking at that piece above by tomic with the whole moon as the cyclops.

i thought well my countries in a water crysis at the moment so lets do a game mockup to join both water saving and a cyclops. so here is what i have so far:

i'm having trouble with the background because seperating the top part of platform from the background is becoming hard. hmm any suggestions i'm using the top right palette. as it allowed for better tones between characters and platforms.

also creating a good background at the same time as seperating all elements has become even harder.

Hmm... I thought all CGA modes had black color?

i think black was one of the main ones that they used, but i think for this challenge they just choose any color from the bunch. i don't think alot of thought was put in because looking at what they had to choose from they could have done way better.

All of the challenge options are valid CGA palettes. Each CGA palette  must consist of 3 colours + an extra background colour, which can be selected out the remaining colours from the 16 available. Black is very frequently used as the background colour, but it is not required.

None of the palettes include black for this very reason. I am interested to see what can be created without the option of using black.

@x-death, I would be interested to hear your thoughts on which valid palettes, that do not include black, would be "way better" for this challenge. Personally, I think that all four of the provided palettes are both challenging and interesting.

Posted By: x-death
Date Posted: 10 March 2009 at 2:00am
well i was thinking if black was included, but i'd figure numbers 1 or 9 for the first then something like 4,6 and 14 for the rest. might have been ok. to be honest i think i was only disappointed because i liked my rain drop cyclops idea i have above but there were very litttle palettes that made the drop look good. or well in my eyes. so i had to make a pink rain drop. and i don't know about anyone else but a pink rain drop to me just looks crap.

also those numbers are the ones on the color display from that link A.B. lazer provided

@x-death, Here is an explanation of some of the choices that were made when selecting the four palettes:

I wanted to have a brighter colour for the first palette, leaving the cyan and white as midtone colours. This differs from the other palettes where the two brightest colours are very close together.

The other colours could've been possibilities. However, I find that the CGA brown to be fairly repulsive and the 3rd palette was intended to use all four "primary colours" - yellow, green, blue and red. I wanted these palettes to be nice (as nice as CGA can get), but at the same time I wanted to make things a bit interesting.

Just keep in mind that this is a challenge and working in less than ideal conditions is all part of that challenge. There is sometimes a lot of problem solving involved, ie. - "what do I have to do in order to achieve what I want under these conditions? Is it possible to get exactly what I want or do I need to approximate"

RobbieE: the size of the arms seems disproportionate, either make the bicep of the left (as viewed) arm larger, or make the forearm smaller.  I like the concept though, I look forward to seeing what you do.

1. It's not very funny.
2. The button is too big, so it looks like he has two eyes, but one under monocle.
3. The form is made without logic. If you look closely at teddy bears - those which are really cute have clear construction and design - you can tell that outline of head is round, ears are two smaller rounds, body is bigger round and arms and legs are ovals:
http://images.google.com/images?ndsp=20&hl=ru&lr=&safe=off&um=1&newwindow=1&q=Teddy+bear&start=0&sa=N - http://images.google.com/images
You can note that those which are looking better have at the same time simpler geometric figures as basis.

Ooh, those are all really good. I doodled a quick Starman, it's still incomplete.

Does it count as a cyclops? It looks like it has one eye, but it really you really don't know that for sure.

Posted By: Shawn
Date Posted: 10 March 2009 at 3:43pm
Technically, starman has no eyes or no visible eyes at least. It's face, if it even has one, is hidden so there's no real way of telling.

That appears to be more of a visor, rather than an eye per say, same problem the starman had.

Not to double post... People seem to be looking here.

Am I going all wrong with these colors?

Posted By: x-death
Date Posted: 10 March 2009 at 7:22pm
well yellow and red are wrmer colors so i wouyld be using them more for your highlights and midtones. and i'd be using green, blue or purple for your shadows. as they are cooler colors.

thats just some basic color theory though. also i think your color count is 5 colors. but challenge only allows 4 as they should be from one of the provided sets.

Posted By: Keeper-of-Styx
Date Posted: 10 March 2009 at 8:21pm
Nope thats only 4 colors. Alright, maybe I will switch up a bit. Or maybe I will just give it some weird colors lol.It seems I have mixed green and red up then, think I should switch them?

Posted By: x-death
Date Posted: 10 March 2009 at 8:42pm
when you used green and dark blue it made the green seem like cyan. so i thought you grabbed an extra color. my bad.

um yeah you can switch them if you want. its up to you. but you will need to consider how you shade it, with only having a few colors.

Posted By: Metaru
Date Posted: 11 March 2009 at 12:04am
that random line art isnt really helping at all to define shapes and therefore shading.

and to remind you that its meant to be creature, a living being with one single eye. reason why xmen's cyclops is not allowed.

When I read about challenge, one of the first characters that came to my mind was Starman DX from Earthbound. He with his famous visor on the cover of SNES game is iconic cyclopic character, probably derived from that alien Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still. In other words, it seen by viewer only as cyclops, it's moving on it's own, so it fits.

Slicing off robots and statues (golems) has no point as it slices off half of fun with no reason. In art-related community main guideline should be aesthetics, I think, not biology. Basing on what you read and seen in the movies you can tell most of the time if character could be called archetypical cyclops or he just winking.

And, still, if robots don't count, then do cyborgs count?

Posted By: vampireslug
Date Posted: 11 March 2009 at 2:07am
Dang, I didn't realize it had to be a living creature... guess it's back to square one for me.

Is there a minimum size?

Posted By: Hapiel

16x16. But it is quite hard to make something gallery worthy at that size!

-------------

Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 12 March 2009 at 1:19am
Actually 10x10 is the minimum size for something to be submitted here.

And since there is no actual minimum size set for the challenge that makes the minimum size technically 10x10, as something can't be submitted any smaller than that anyway.

First forum post. I guess it wasn't my first forum post.

I consider this to be my first serious/real pixel art.

It's still heavily WIP.. Just a sketch for now.

Any crits?

Note: I added extra colors to help me mold, I will be removing them.
Also, I just realized it had to be a creature.. However I think I can make this read as a creature in the end.

What exactly is defining a 'creature' in this case though? Would the hand with an eye in it be acceptable enough?

use less dithering, and pay attention to the anatomy of that arm, at some pint feels like an elbow and a few bones are mssing there.

oh, and about mr.tsuyoshi, i'd take that tear away from the image... for my taste it looks better w/o it.

Hehe Ricki, exactly my thoughts, so I decided to be the first :P And thank you!

DaMehMan, keep it up, your piece has potential, just build upon it!

Mr. Tsuyoshi, loving yours!

As I'm a pervert, LadyHazy's piece is also interesting in my opinion ;)

Tomic's is just plain awesomness so I won't even try discussing it.

x-death, sorry mate, a bit too simple, feels unfinished (you posted it already for the competition I think?)

BuBu, nice start, work on it!

PixelKiwi and RobbiE, LOVING your cycs too.

A.B.Lazer, good idea, but needs more effort.

Shawn keep going, looking good.

Karzahnii and Keeper-of-Styx, keep on going, like where you're heading at.

MFlanga, yours might be one of my favs :3

Tunc, nice, but good elaborate it a bit.

Dr D, nice start, hopefully you'll add something to the background.

JthmNny, looking nice, but not sure what they'll say about char's that have lost their 2nd eye :o

Skamocore's one is teh awesomeness!

(sorry if I missed anyone)

And here, next wip (sorry editing quite slow, but I'll try to speed up today):

Heh, I'm pretty new at this too, but I'll try to say something.

Firstly read the comments on your picture, they already give the general idea of what's wrong: http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/40920.htm - http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/40920.htm

That said, my first impression was some kind of blob jumping above a platform. I guess the biggest problem here is that it's not understandable what is what. If, for example, that's a waterline there, it should affect the monster's coloring/shading/shape atleast a bit, so that we can see that it's submerged in something. The picture just gives out a feeling that either your monster is floating in the air, or it's just posted on top of everything else.

Hope I helped. :)

yeah i knew that i need to shade he bacground water and find some way of fixing the character floating thing. i just don't know how!

if i knew what colors to use in everything then that might help but i've tried practically every set and tried all colors in almost every combination i could think of. and nothing is working! that is why i asked for advice... :(

i've made topics and everything trying to get advice on how to fix this and its making me angry the more things that fail. because i would like to see at least one of my peices actually work for once!

Current WIP:
->

(not ready yet, but can't edit it for some hours...)
(I think I might remove the shading from the hair)

I would advise applying a bit more dithering atleast to the character, darger from bottom to the part where he breaks the surface. Also, more realistic waves to the water, maybe like a ripple from the point where the monster breaks the surface :)

Thanks JthmNy,

in a way I like your new piece much more than the old one. The first thing that comes to mind is the word cute :) Only critique I can say is that it feels a tad unfinished (and it probably isn't ready yet?). But overall nice shading dithering and I love your cute little cyclopes :3

Man Diferent monitors makes it look different, damnit.

I just work on it while im at work, and im no longer at work so I cant finish it, I'd add a tad bit more but i get to busy once im home, so its finished for now, maybe next contest I can put in a bit more work, but it was fun, also that zombie one was unfinished but its all I could do @ work (tech support ftw)

and I wasnt sure how to draw a female cyclops, so I gave her eyelash's, I coulda done hair but I was running out of time :P

and the shadow behind him could use work, but thats a pain in teh ass pallete, I shoulda gone with the one everyone else has been using, that dark grey woulda been really handy, but this showed me yellow/purple sky is wonderful :D

Yeah your sky's working out pretty fine there. I would've done the hair mate, as the thing that mostly distinguished male/female for me was the clothing :)

WIP (dunno it might be finished):

[Edited already lol]

Commens anyone before I submit it... Though I might come up with something myself :)

yeah try adding a background to it. and on the wrist band on left arm towards the bottom there is a pixel that sticks out. looks really pink.

also just a possibility but you might be able to do something with the hair and pants.

Which pixel exactly, I'm sooo tired right now that I can't think too straight, but I'll try to do something with the pic on the weekend if I have time. Though I like it against the back background, but you're probably right that I should do something.

Shading Shading Shading... and oh dithering. Your background just looks like a flat shaded surface. It doesn't look like there's a head. You have to give it more dimension and shape. CURVES DAMMIT!

looks great to me, i'd rather work on a non-checkboard dithering. and put an eye on the teeth's lines, they're not really following the perspective of the image.

how do you guys create that type of shadow? the one that is on the side of the box, the pixels are in perfect spacing, but how?

Actually, the background /is/ a flat shaded thing - the thing i was drawing doesn't have a face, it's just a floating eye and mouth. I'll fix the teeth later though. Thanks!

edit: Eh, might as well submit it as it is. I have stuff to do today and can't be bothered to finish it properly.

Hmm okay I see. :< But the picture in my opinion doesn't give that impression. But the eyes and mouth, those are pretty neat :)

Also I'm loving the entries in this competition so far!

thats called dithering. its basically a small optical ilusion used to generate an extra color in situations where a fixed color palete doesnt allow you to add new tones.

PS: i forgot

i just got raped by exocet.
