Well as promised i want to make a sprite of shyub, my previous portrait that i did, this is just a stick figure kinda sketch of how i want his pose, i kno it's really bad but i plan to do my best during pixeling it..
I want him to be like standing on the toes of his right foot and throwing away his toothpick and kinda looking to his left. ![]() P.s; Damn i sure need to study poses :/ Edited by RollerKingdom - 10 February 2010 at 8:58pm |

I would suggest getting your line art for this down in pixels before any coloring. It's really so much easier to make changes. It's something I've learned the hard way. It seems like a pain at first, but it really saves a lot of time in the long run.

Oo well i heard that is better to just get the shape done instead of doing the line art, if you do the lineart it's a pain to change it after it's colored and shaded.. if you check my portrait i only got the shapes done and strted working from there.

For some things, yeah basic shapes are a good way to start. Anatomy though, I'm finding it a lot easier for the line art first. Maybe start out as basic shapes for the idea and then turn it into line art. This is just my opinion though. I'm sure everyone has their own technique. This looks like it'll be pretty good size. That's why I suggested it. |

Yay, a sprite!
Okay, before you get too far, even if you think you can do a lot of fixing in pixels, I recommend you make a clean, workable sketch, first. Something like this: ![]() Use a 'balls and rods' technique to make an easily posable maquette (I'm used to the process, so I shortcut here directly to muscle outlines on the simple areas) and then you can flesh it out as a pixel (in a new layer, preferably, if you're using a programme like GIMP). You'll never have to worry about proportions, and you won't get so attached to a part of the picture that you won't want to change it (for example, I reworked the arm on the right a few times to get the fist resting against the thigh correctly). If it's not too much trouble, make a new sketch for me, so we can be sure your finished sprite will be built on a good foundation for easier finishing. Thanks! |

Thank you NInja, that looks pretty darn good, Ill try to sketch it later using this technique, prob wont come out as good as yours but yea..
All my pixels are done on paint so i don't use layers :S (and tbh i don't really like them lol..) |

What if he was leaning against a wall? Your current drawing sorta or protrays like he is leaning on something. I don't understand why his right foot has to be up, but hey your drawing, and it could just be something i'm missing. Another thing, He doesn't have to extend his whole arm out to flick the toothpick. I simple flick of the wrist would work. I think this will be a fun post to watch, so keep at it.

That's terrific, it really gives us something to work with. Don't worry about not starting in Paint - unless you have a pen tablet, there's no way a mouse can do better than a pencil.
Kenpokis mentioned a wall, but for my 2p it looks like he's on a barstool, lol (you did describe him before as a 'badass', and that might even give you ideas for a background...). Okay, your sketch looks, great, RK, but before you make it into a pixel, I notice that his thighs are a bit too short (and his hips may be just slightly too narrow, even tho he's a dude!) and also his pecks need to not be quite so low (at the moment they stop past the halfway point of his bicep - try stopping just above the halfway point). If it isn't too much trouble, can you try these mods and see if the sketch looks better? (as Det. Adrian Monk might say, 'You'll thank me later'.) Thanks! |

So is it better?
i did it while i was bored at my drawing and painting class waiting for people to get their painting done.. ![]() Also i made a dude at the top that i really liked the design on his face hehe might scribble more later on with him and make a new character for the future. |

Great job - and I love that you are planning for future characters (and I notice a 'wireframe' structure beneath the face, which looks like it really helped this head come out great!) - I hope to see this new dude as your next topic when Shyub is done (then you can post whatever material you have backed up) but not until then please, I have a hard enough time keeping up with you young people! ;P
The props (proportions) of the new thighs/torso look much better. But you accidentally introduced a flaw you didn't have before. As a quick quiz, can you spot which arm is longer than the other? Second, remember not to make the toes of your feet just a blob that hangs off the ankle (as on the rightside foot here). For a fun exercise, take off your own shoe, hold it at arm's length in the rough position of your character, and sketch the outline - it's the perfect way to get a feel for the shape and volume of the foot. Assuming they'll let you take off your shoe in art class, lol. |

THank you, and yea i noticed that the right arm is smaller than the left one..
Thats also a nice idea, i can prob do it during pixeling.. since ill have to redo the entire thing for pixeling i can start fixing those minor problems. When i have the base of the sprite done ill post here for CC Edited by RollerKingdom - 12 February 2010 at 6:40pm |

Hey, I still think it would be cool, instead of having his whole arm stretched out just to kinda have a more close-in arm, and put more detail on the finger. I think it would give him more of a BA look.

What do you think of his style?
![]() • He is supposed to have a part of the short bigger than the other • On his right arm, there is a poofy part of the shirt (remember what i was doing during his portrait) • I also modified his left hand to a type of claw since he is kinda of a demon, so it matches his "horn". • Added some bands or w.e you call it on his left/thigh • I plan to make him barefoot • The belt has 2 strings that falls on the back. |

Wow, this is going really well, RK.
I def like the direction you're taking with the costume. If you want to have the leftside shorts' leg read as longer, you should probably make it even longer! Don't do this if it doesn't feel right for you, but ideas that pop up for me would be to have the cuff be past his knee and mirror the sleeve on the rightside arm (maybe even an extension that's the same colour, for a two tone look - can't be sure this would be good without trying it, though) or even make the cuff ragged, with torn bits that hang down? Just throwing stuff out there - let me know what was suggested in your own mind's eye. The bands behind his legs made him look like his legs were chained together when I first glanced at it - and I was like, 'hey, the escaped demon look: cool!' If that bothers you, however, maybe you can get away with some artistic breeze and have them shifted out to one side. (kinda like the idea of bondage demon though, lol) |

Ya thanks, ill prob make the shorts on HIS right side bigger, also it would be a nice idea to make one of the bands like a chain broken :D that would be more BA hehe, ill start choosing some colors later for him, of course ill be using the originals from his portrait so they match.

That's not looking bad at all, RK, fear nought!
I like the new shorts shape. You'll need to make the nose less obvious at this resolution, though, or he'll get a cat face! I hope this isn't too picky, but I think his head needs to be shifted one pixel to the right (forgot to point it out in the colour-shape version). The shading makes his shirt pop, definitely, but I'm not sure that having the highlight on the outside of both arms is realistic to the eye (i.e. it'll notice something is off - it needs constant fooling, unfortunately!). If I still had some of my old action figures (<cough>boy dolls<cough>) I'd hold them up under a bright lamp in a dark room and get all kinds of useful shadow information. You could make a quick sculpture out of modelling clay, though, also (this is the technique that da pros use, even though it seems like such a bother - but it can't be beat!). |

Wow, the head on the shoulders is perfectly placed!
I really like shiny things, and the colours in the top shirt go nicely together. So as long as the lighting is realistic, I got no problems with the top one (what did you think of the idea of using some kind of model to help with shadows and highlights - is it too much trouble?). p.s. don't forget the nose and shorts leg ;) |

I think you need to think more about his pose... right now it's unclear what he is doing. Why is one leg up in the air? Why is one hand tensed in front of him? It makes it look awkward. You got the proportions right, just the pose is stiff and doesn't quite make sense. If he is supposed to be walking to the viewer, then you need much more bend and tension on the foot that has weight on it. Right now it's essentially floating. Also, study leg shape more! I see a recurring problem in your pieces of oversimplified leg anatomy. You just make one popeye bulge in the middle of the calf, and ignore the knee. I scratched out a new silhouette of the arms head and torso:
![]() As for the arms... figure out what you want them to be doing. if this guy is supposed to be walking then get a nice bend in the foot he has weight on and align his back foot so it looks like it is about to move forward and hit the ground. If he walked in his current pose then he would look like a penguin walking fool. Also, look at some run animations or walk animations and see what the arms are doing during it. Last thing, I think your skin color is way too yellow! He looks almost jaundiced. Get some reds and pinks in there. Anyway, keep it up man you've seriously improved since you first came here. Your anatomy knowledge, and overall knowledge has grown so much since you made the rock lee thing. |

Argh Thanks for the advice however i was not trying to make him walking or anything like that, it's just a pose i did in front of the mirror and decided to try it, his leg is not floating but it's a bit on the back and he is on his toes kinda. I think what's prob making the piece a bit more weird is the skin color which ill take a look at it.

It doesn't look nasty at all... it's coming along nicely. Just pay more attention to the shape of the feet, when you stand on your toes the feet deform.
I made an edit, firstly changed the shape of the feet, then edited the face, then the colors of the skin. Lastly I got rid of your texture on the shirt, it isn't conveying what I think you want it to. Plus, this style of anime looks good with nice and clean flat shaded areas, like the pants you drew. When you try and get intricate cloth textures, then it can contrast and look odd. Also, watch out for single pixels. They don't usually convey any information, they just make the piece look noisy. Mainly this was in the hands. ![]() Keep it up |

I think you feel doubtful about this because you're out of your comfort zone. Which is good. :-) Also anatomy is difficult....this is why I suggested line art which is easier to change and easier to see. Basic shapes are good for somethings, but for this line art would be the way to go as you can put in the eyes, mouth, etc. (give it a look)
Anyway I traced your last edit so maybe you could see some of the things that are bothering you about this.
