I started with this sketch for a point and click game mock-up level.

Color palette looks tricky tho...

Aww, I like the palette. It looks challenging. The several shades of green will be great for depth on backdrops.

I was right in the middle of making an awesome underwater cave level for my game when I saw this... then I saw the palette restriction

But in all honesty, I think the odd palette could make some really artistic and interesting results. I don't think I'll be in this one, but it'll be great to watch

@rod750: If that red dot is your light source, it seems to me the shading on the chimneys on top is backwards (namely the one on the right). Here's a quick edit describing what I mean:

(Left is the original, right is my edit)

In the chimney on the left, I also added some of the purple as shading, and to make it look more balanced I put some purple around the body of the ship in different ways, as you can see. That's just what I would do. Looks like a great start so far!

The palette is what you make of it. By choosing not to use it, you're losing out on the opportunity to force some creativity out of yourself.

"Happy Fun Kawaii Mermaid Princess Wizard Adventures Under The Sea II Turbo: Hyper Swimming Edition"

I think the name has a nice ring to it. Still WIP

Oh! I see! LOL! Thank you, I don't like how looks the purple there, but obviously, I will fix the shading.

Setzer: Damn! Thats a great mock-up! And as you said, feeling restricted by the palette is great at these challenges! I see them more as a challenge for myself than a challenge against me fellow pixel artists!
Love your work so far! I've posted mine, perhaps a bit premature, but I felt I had to put something out there since I haven't posted anything at PJ for ages! Looking forward for the finished result on your piece and what the others make of the palette!

Was baseed on NES Megaman series, and Meatal Gear.
I know, the "jellyfish-thing" it's really bad. But it's the best that I could make.

Anyway, that palette screwed up everything.
I had like 3~2 ideas, but none worked, so, I've chose to try 8-bit style. I'm new to the "pixel world", so, I'm not very good. To make things worse, I hate doing 8-bit style, so it didn't come very well.

wth?! that is ur one day work?.... ...
looking great so far...i know its wip and all, probably going to be awesome anyway, but here some crits...
the doors (?) dont read to well they look like blocks, not rly like they are hollow... where does the boss meter refer to... is the boss still to come or is it the crab?, coz if so, it should look much bigger and more mean, like the squids, also u could make a little portrait next to the meter aswell... the squids look great btw..... the player portrait looks a bit strange imo, i think u could move the hair a bit to the left, some red in the tiles would be nice... like putting some seastars there for instance...

and yeah.... thx for putting down my spirit to participate on this one

That's an incredible start, fawful. Although it took me a while to realize the thing on top of his head was an eye, and when I did finally recognize it, he looked completely different to me. I think he'd look a lot more badass if his top eye was something else :P

Mine isn't much good, but still, it is my first contest.

Need to finish up the waves and add a couple of animals.

Posted By: Damian
Date Posted: 06 April 2010 at 2:57pm
@Marac, looking ok for a first. Maybe try working on a smaller piece, I know that huge PA's like these can be a bit daunting.

@Elementy, Wish I'd thought of that XD. Its brilliant.

@Setzer, Your experience once again shines through. Really cute and so smooth, you really nailed this pallet. I love the creatures, they look so smooth.

Here's something that I've worked on during my free time off work.

I've worked on this on two different computers. Both with different contrasts. So I cant say I'm very pleased that the contrast is higher than I expected on the first computer.

Thanks, I updated a lot of it, the boss meter is just empty until a boss actually shows up in the game (The way Castlevania did it). I've updated a lot of it, and I hope I've fixed what has bothered you. However I'm not going to be putting any red in the tiles, the red is for sprites, to help them stand out in gameplay. It would make more sense if it were an actual game, but hopefully you get the idea behind it.

I'll probably be done with this as soon as i can draw a decent crab.

@Setz - the main issue with your crab is that it appears to be slightly out of perspective. Everything else is looking great though. Is the crab the boss btw?

Also, come to think of it, the palette seems like something you would probably pick yourself =/

Oh, and I love the name.

I noticed how the colors could fit Ursula almost perfectly.
I would add Ariel too, but there are no skin colors, so I thought I could go for some sort of Graphic Adventure or RPG involving little mermaid.

This would be the final boss, of course.

Im not too satisfied.
I think Ursula has smaller hands, but I can never achieve the right perspective.

I will need help :p

Well... I think by hand will always be better
but if you have gimp you can create a new transparent layer, draw the pattern in the corner (making sure it's tileable), autocrop layer, copy (ctrl-c) the layer, and select the bucket tool with the "fill type" option set to "pattern fill"->"clipboard". Then it's just a matter of using the marquise tool and filling it in.

This same relationship applies to mockups of underwater levels and mockups of underwater games, no?

Oh damn it's going to be tough deciding what to vote for.
Decided to forfeit this challenge because I'm horrible with restricted palettes, and I ended up barely starting before failing.
So far -DE-'s is looking best with all the pelvic thrust lazers and all.

Looks good!  Only critiques I have is the un AA'd water jet which is looking very jaggy, and the darker dot lines on the bottom snake's tongue.

Why so many Octopus o.O

They seem to be stereotypical underwater bad guys.  You've got the bloopers in Mario, the Octopus dude from Diddy Kong Racing, and that, and that, and other stuff that I'm too lazy to remember.
