doing tons of monster sprites, let me know if you have any suggestion or better solutions or ideas or whatever
I'm about to start doing the bigger ones, which will be harder / easier to mess up.

Oh god these are so awesome. Are they for a game or something?
(Also maybe you could change the background to something a little less green/saturated to make it easier to see some of the colours?)

i used to have a white/gray bg, but you couldn't see anything either. there's no good solution, the ending result will probably have outlines

Some of them have 4-5+trans color count instead of the usuall 3+trans (if your going 8 bit). Ice golem is looking a little flat. And the grey winged deamon (far right) and the fly could be given a better outline. I hope you update a lot, cause these are pretty sweet.

Cool, if all the art is like this the game will look awesome at the very least. Yeah, I feel like you may need to outline the characters. You could scale them up first and then just use a 1px outline to make it look less overpowering, since I imagine you'll have to scale them up for the game anyway.

Inspired by realm of the mad god, which is what I'd guess you're thinking of. But don't worry, mine's a little different
-Made mammoth bigger than elephant -added dire wolf / dire hellhound -worked on ice golem -prev now has 1x in case you want to try an edit, and full view with outline
@crozier: Yeah, i've decided to go with just what looks best, rather than sticking to strict rules. And the that "demon" is supposed to be "mothman". yeah he needs work... @bananawalrus: check new preview for outlines

Looks great. Only thing I'd say is that some of them (Scorpion man) for example, now look VERY Realm of the Mad God, so the game will probably have to be very different to avoid drawing criticism on that front. Still, a lot of them are very original and different so you shouldn't be too bad.

-made the dire wolf/ hellhound look less adorable -mountain giant -cyclops -dragon

Some jaggies on the dragon, brown wolf and cyclops. (Dragon's jaw for example)
Other than that they're great.

I'm not sure about the black outline, it does look nice in itself and really makes that easy to read, so I guess it's a good thing, but it might clash a bit too much with the background for my taste.

I think the black outline gives it a sort of neo retro feel somewhat akin to the newly released Fez.

@Mille yeah I feel like it doesn't fit really, even though it makes them stick out
here are some other outline ideas, let me know what you think

No outline looks best, I think. And nice variety on the tileset. Also, those elephants and dogs are epic, but perhaps thier proportions to the character is a little off. The ghost, thing under the red mushroom, the TMNT guy, and red eyed snow beast (far left) are a little unrecognizable.

The background integration of the 'no outline' versions is better but you can't separate the characters from certain background tiles. The black outlines make you distinguish the characters no matter what background you're using but they pop out too much and don't look as if they fit to the scene.
The soft outlines are some kind of trade-off of both advantages (and disadvantages). I don't like trade-offs but in this case it seems to work, so I like the soft outlines the most.

However, the black outlines might fit if you increase the contrast of the background as well or add objects that also got a black outline (e.g. trees). ...but you possibly knew that already.
PS: I changed the outline colour of the grey guy a bit.

I like those thin grey lines so far. Smooth stuff.

I like the third one down, second in. (Gray outlines without corners, thin line.)
The thicker white and black lines look like they are pulsing with power or something >.>
I love the sprites, they are absolutely adorable.
Might be nice to see some snakes though, you've got a few things that are part-snake, after all.

There are snakes! To the right of the golems, under the chickens. Snake and cobra. I will prolly change the cobra's color to differentiate them. Also there will be a basilisk and a quetzalcoatl.

I'm still not convinced by the outline.
I know why you want to add it and I know why you're having difficulty
but mixing 2x(or more) pixels and 1x pixels rarely works and is a taboo as far as I've been taught.
If the background and characters are 2x, then so too should the outlines or have none at all.
as it's been said before, if they were by themselves and not intended to move or have a background at 2x pixels, you might have gotten away with the 1x outline. But since this is not the case, i really think you should cut your losses and go for either a 2x outline or none at all.
Still love these little guys, they're adorable.
edit:
as a trade-off (or just an idea) considering they're quite flat looking, perhaps you might consider making them paper-cut-outs kinda, giving them a white 2x outline and then a dark shadow underneath. *Shruggs* just throwing ideas out there to make them stand out from the background without having to resort to mixing pixel ... zoom levels? depths? .. size? what's it called anyway. lol.

By gods, you're right >.<
Sorry, my brain just said that he "regular" creatures would be together (as everything else is pretty organized to my eye), so I looked by the cats and dogs.

i think I'll just go for 1x outlines, easiest to scale and program, plus will probably look best. here's another mockup.

Yes! I love it. I like the high saturation too but I think the rocks could be a bit more readable, either by being darker or maybe a more rocky shape. Could just be me though.

I really prefer them without the outlines, I think the thick, dark line lessen the readability.

The trees are not reading as 3/4 view. The black outline doesn't fit in when theres no other scenery with the outline. (oh and dim the rock's outline just a tad)
Check out the A Link to the Past's trees. It's a good example of the 3/4 viewpoint.
Hows the programming going?

@Bam112 Oh I plan on it, forest, desert, savannah, cave, mountain, volcano, underworld

contrast. Most of them need lots of contrast.
Also take a look at "What did I do to deserve this, my lord?"
awesome psp game with tiny graphics that does the job of making tiny things stand out quite well.
loving the bgs btw

if you had time you could make the tail on the flying snake swirl around too, or wave up and down.
