It kind of looks like an orange pancake. I think its because of the drop shadow behind the peice. I would add some darker shades to the edge of the fruit and add a different type of shadow.

Like this:

Keep going!

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT!

the problem is that the shadow is going in the wrong direction.

The light is coming from us, and the shadow is coming toward us, wich is wrong. if you see what i mean, you should have the shadow going toward top right

The diagonal one that looks like the projected end of the shadow.

your grapefruit is quite circle shaped but the shading stops like an oval. Also, they aren't that flat. try moving the bump on the top higher up. Furthermore, you could probably have used less colors in it. Furtherfurther more, I'm not very familiar with shadows, but should it really dark yellow?

your grapefruit is quite circle shaped but the shading stops like an oval.

Shadows cast by a circle on a flat surface by an angled lightsource are generally ovals. Unless I'm misunderstanding.

Anyway, what's that, 28 colors used in this? You have three basic things to need colors for. The shadow, the grapefruit and the transparency. This could be cut down to the single digits of a color count, especially if dithering is involved. If not dithering, it could still get to be around 8 to 12 colors. Please try to control your palette, it's a useful thing to know how to do sometimes.

i think you should try to dither it, it'd give a nice texture on the fruit

I did a quick edit. I think, according to your light direction, we shouldn't see so much of the shadow and there shouldn't be any shadow directly underneath it.

You also need to work on the shape of the fruit itself, you have alot of jaggies to trim.

Blick: Thank you for the advice Blick, but I like using alot of colors. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with limiting your palette, It's just not my style.

leel: Thank you for the tip! I'll try dithering and see if it comes out right (But I warn you I'm not a very good ditherer!)

JJ_Maxx: Thank you JJ_Maxx, I was having so much trouble getting the shadow right! Ill be sure to trim the edges, I was planning on doing it after i got the shadow and general shading correct.

Is this any better? (I didn't dither it, sorry leel.) The biggest problem I'm having with it right now is that the top is too flat. Does anyone have any tips on how I can fix it?

i think if you were to use more of the darker colours, and less highlights, it'd help lots. allso, the dent for the green stuff wasn't there.

here's an edit (with dithers. i like dithers)

this is what I mean by the weird shading.  The orange shading.
I didn't do the dither completely, but you get the jist of it. Gist? jist. whatever. I wasn't referring to the shadow. You see, on his, the shading just...abruptly stops. It isn't a full circly shape. It almost makes it look like a wedge was cut out of it.

The little bump should be worked on, it's just a circle. There should be darker shades too. It's too lightly shaded.

Aaaand....work on the shadow, I think it'd be cast differently. I didn't work on the shape of it myself, I just changed it because I didn't like the yellow.

Sorry...um....um....just look at the first image i posted and see what I messed around with. To a certain extent it should have shading more like that. I'm not very good at explaining things in an easy way...sorry..

I like it a lot more now. Maybe add a BG color so the shadow AA looks better.

the bottom right hand part of the grapefruit is too straight. It doesn't seem as round as everything else. I like the update, though.

It looks odd shaped on the right side, almost as if there's a tumor.

It looks oddly shaped because most grapefruits arent perfect circles. They are more oval shaped. Examples:

Yeah i see your point about the shape, but the one i'm holding is definetely round >.<

The end product is good, but if you're putting it on that background i would have made the grapefruit more defined (darker borders) and perhaps AA'd it, but hey, that's just me. And i'm lame.
