Add the ears too, and fix the shading, and it'll be a cool piece.

Use a more saturated brown, darker too, and make it kinda wild. Focus on groups of hair, not individual ones. I'm kinda hair phobic myself, so take my advice on that with a grain of salt.

Did you try dithering instead of adding new colors?

Focus on tufts of fur puffing out, and give each its own outline.

Sure! I'll edit with one!

This is rough, but it does show what i mean. Use triangles of hair to show tufts etc.

I tried that and it just looks like a normal lion and not Alex from madagascar...

You'll have to create the shape, then chop it up a little, but still keeping the solidility. You'll have to make the light shoot out with strands of hair, to make it look like hair. Just try to replicate the reference.

Personally if there was not meant to be a resemblance to Alex from Madagascar i'd have the hair shooting out in thick spikes, but hey.

Hmm, it's too uniform. Notice on the reference pic how its lighter on the outside than on the inside? I'd do that, and use more than 2 colours.

I would give the mane a more 'wild' look to it.

I think your problem is using "Mirror". Don't mirror the outline so it looks the same on both sides, because no one's face is shaded/looks the same completely on both sides. I'd try giving the mae a bit more variation.

Hi. I edited this (mostly just the palette):

The biggest problems with it at the moment have to do with the palette: very low contrast and a lack of saturation. These are essential for making something charming and cartoon-y.

The other major problem is banding. You should read up on it and avoid it at all costs. In short, it's where you have single-pixel lines of hugged buffer shades. It creates 'bands' of jagged color. The contrast is pretty low here, so they don't really stick out, but it's especially prevalent on the forehead and nose. If this doesn't make sense please let me know and I'll try to explain better.

I'm personally not a big fan of all the dithering. I'm not generally a hardcore anti-ditherist, I just don't think it suits this piece (I don't think it suits many cartoon-y pieces). You of course may disagree and that's cool. Regardless, though, I would make an attempt to reduce your palette. The color count isn't unreasonable, I just think tighter shading with fewer colors would enhance the piece.

EDIT: I just noticed I accidentally gave him dog ears :P

its all about contrast. notice that the point of having a darker mane around the face is to make it pop-out more and avoid it from blending with the mane itself(due them being made of the same color)

and avoid overdithering at all cost.
