Hi, first time poster. I used to do a lot of pixel art about two years ago during my summer break and have just recently gotten back into doing sprites/animations for certian games design projects. First off, here is a selection of some things I did back then.
I was working on a Sonic/Jet Set Radio huybrid game a while back and here is some of the concept sprites and final animations for said game. Viewtiful Joe wasn't going to be in the game, I just felt like drawing him.

Alongside that I was also working on a game based on the 'Evil Dead' movie trilogy. Here are some of the conept sprites and final animations for the game

Something I did a few days ago to get myself back into the swing of sprite making/animation

These sprites are for a game project I'm working on right now that involves a mountian climber. I'v tried a few designs here but can't seem to get my design down at the moment. I'd love any suggestions/critiqe on these ones

Thanks for looking

Holy crap where have you been? I remember seeing the Evil Dead
animations like 2 or 3 years ago in my early Pixelation days. I really
don't have much else to say, I'm kind of in shock to see you return.

I used to do pixel art when I was doing a course I hated at college a few years ago. I used to love getting home after a bad day and working on these for hours on end. After that I took a graphics course and decided to work on my regular drawing skills, photoshop skills, vector art skills, etc for a while. After two years I went on to start a Games Design course at my local University where I have been trying various styles of drawing styles and techniqes, and after finishing my first year I am getting very frustrated with drawing in general. A few days ago I just opened up MSPaint for no real reason and started to doodle sprites. Since then I'v been working on my pixel art and animations and have remembered how damn fun it still is, I enjoy it way more than regular drawing plus I can bring my pixel work to life thank to the ease of animating sprites.
I was really saddened about the loss of Pixelation.net. How many people from there are here now anyway?
Something I'm working on right now, should get it finished in a few hours hopefully. I'v been playing Guitar Hero religouly for 2 months, and as conselation to me finally breaking the controller thanks to over-playing it (wrecked the whammy bar ) I'v decided to try and draw the Guitar Hero, Johnny Napalm to cheer myself up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/kevingrfoster/jonnynapalm.gif">
It's really strange, it would of taken me twice as long and the quality of the sketch would be twice as messy if I did it with a pencil. Weird. Anyway, I hope to get back into action soon.
EDIT: how do I get to choose my own avatar?

I did hang arounf there as Hotlead Junkie but do remeber a guy called JointJunkie too
Before I got any further, is the Gibson Guitar about the right size or too big or small compared to Johnny (where the character linework and guitar cover one another)? My references

Joint Junkie was a different person.
Hotlead, if you want to see the latest resurrection of Pixelation, here's http://pixel-arts.org/pixelopolis/index.php - Pixelopolis .
No longer hosted on swoo.net and Tsugumo and FrozenEmu are around even
less than they used to be. I think I've seen them post about three
times, collectively.
I'd say the guitar is about right in size. The thing that's bothering me
about this is his right (viewer left) foot that should be facing more
forward. This will take some foreshortening (welcome to hell), but
it'll really help the pose look more natural.

Um, i think you should have the hands of the first one, but shaded like the last one. Perhaps not red though, seeing as his goggles are yellow. And um, shoes of the first one look best to me, in the others the perspective of the nearest foot is lost. Goggle wise, i think the blue one looks the best, but i dont like the colour. Something yellowish (perhaps slightly orange) with the same contrast could work.
Wh00t, and hello.

Hehe, thanks. That was the first concept animation for the Evil Dead sprites. I decided I wanted a slightly grittier style so I decided to make the other set

Thanks for the suggestions and the whoo0t. Good point on the boot spikes, they do throw the perspective off a little and I'll try and up the contrast on the yellow/orange goggles, thanks.

Edited the sprite based on your suggestions and did an idle stance. I'd love some critiqe before I start to animate, especially on how the shading looks and any improvements I can make. Thanks.
EDIT: Less ninja-like now and a little more mountian-climbery hopefully. Added some saftey gear and messed with the colour scheme. Like to hear people's opinions
EDIT2: more colour scemes, plese tell me what looks the more mountian-climber like, does it work better with or without the rubber pads on the trousers?

his head seems to be sticking out pretty far forwards in his idle stance, like he's jutting his neck out or is exceedingly tired. might want to consider changing that.

I dont like any of the colour edits apart from perhaps the yellow. The pads do sorta look better. And although i preferred the ninja-esque one i spose it's better to not be. The stance looks cool, but his crotch is weird. And i sorta like the way the head is leaning forwards, although it would probably look better if it was moved around a pixel back.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions for how he should look being a mountianeer and all, blue or orange gear? I'm pretty sure that this will be my final choice. Personally I like the orange one. Seems more traditioal seeing as mountianeers usually wear bright colours so they can be spotted easily if lost on a mountian http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/kevingrfoster/climberedit.gif -

Trying to get a decent 'limber up/idle' animatyion going, with little details such as the visor moving and the pocket opening but I can't seem to get it right. Suggestions?
EDIT: added a slower version

I appreciate the comment but I need to get a decent idle animation done and would like suggestions on how I could improve it, thanks.

Well, I don't know about the little pouch flapping, And the right arm.. it's extended and I think could do with some recipricating movement.

I don't think the idle animation has to be so drastic I mean, was he just running a few miles? It looks like he's breathless rather then just normal breathing.

Maybe the idle animation should include the chest moving due to breathing.

Lol i love it! So much life, the animation is really good. I mean, it's obviously overthetop, but i like that.
Does sorta look like he's kissing though, if you examine it more.

thanks a lot, I'm a massive, massive fan of the Metal slug games/sprites so those are a great insperation to me, I'm addicted to adding detail and movement wherever I can in an animation hence them being a little over the top (argh, NOTHING should stay still in an animation, heh).
The fact that it started as an idle animation and ended up an over the top 'just ran a marathon' animation shows I need to plan these out a little more. Any good tips or turourials on planning animations in general (or just general animation?).

These seem really awesome. But your main man (the guy you used for your avatar) could use some highlights, methinls.
Awesome job overall. You've got great character design. :)

Working on an idle animation for the climber character, right now he's just 'limbering up'. Do you think this would look good as an idle animation or does it need something else to make it look a little more natural?

Now it lookslike he's looking for somone. Why not try a simple breathing while standing animation?
Isn't an idle animation just someone standing there doing nothing?

You're right, I keep trying to overcomplicate this thing, I'll just do a simple breathing animation instead.
Oh, and while I was waiting for a reply..

Can you imagine a 'Metal Slug Solid' game? That would freakin' rock.

I was walking the dog yesterday and had an image of Snake and the ninja fighting Metal Gear Rex and Liquid snake in a gameplay style in the vien of Metal Slug, all in the Metal Slug style with 'Neeekeeta lawncha!' voiceovers and all. It was glorious. I was thinking doing a bunch of MGS characters like Snake, Meryl, Otcacon, etc and recreating MGS moments in the Metal slug style would be extremley awesome. I must resist and work on my game though.
EDIT: could be a great collab project though

He breathes in ok, then some huge bulge comes from his side stomach area to the right of his chest. I dont think that's needed, just a short breath inwards, then a long breath out. Long being a few miliseconds longer ;]
