Found an image while googling and it looked iso (its not). I don't know where its going but it will be AA'd I just drafted the grid and color blocked for now. I don't expect these colors to remain. I will place some kind of fancy design on the balloon

These chinese dragons looked cool so maybe they'll stay? Not quite sure yet. I like the idea of a red dragon in a sea of flames and water or maybe clouds.
Edit: The colored dragon ref is by the mighty Gas13 o.O

That's looking the tasty, but it doesn't appear to be right.
The individual lines of the balloon bulge out so much that you won't be able to have a straight line along them like you have now (the tail of the right one for instance)

You are so right on that, back to the drawing board I may have to soften the indentations if the dragon becomes too wierd looking going over the bumps.

Ack, shame, that design would have looked so funky :/
I wouldn't go for the dragons if you want to respect that rule, they probably will end up looking really funky.
I say try something that wouldn't be altered as much... How about your beatle? (jeatle? jaleatle? jalonseatle?). Make it huuuuge, so that the indentations matter less.

Omg that design looks so awesome, i think you could pull it off if you just fixed every bulge. It would be warped but i think we could make it out. If not, i'm sure you'll think of something equally good. You'll also have to sort out the ropes and their bulging and perspective i think... hmm. Lovely design, and good luck with the AAing! Lol.

Taking the dragon design and wrapping it over the ridges AND keeping it iso makes it look like total crap. I have taken liberties with the face so that it appears to wrap but is still looks like a dragon. The body ended up looking like a wave so looking at chinese paintings they often have these curly clouds. I have placed these over all the offensive areas. Because they are simple shapes the perspective remains pure. I think this makes the dragons curvature believable enough? I'm thinking the flames going down the body will help too. The ropes once detailed should help a lot. Those I'll leave for once I'm setteled on the dragon itself, I guess.

This just may be too much for me but I'll keep at it for now. Tried another kind of dragon just to see if it was the style more than the dragon. Its not. I will start over with less ridges on the balloon and go back to the Chinese dragon which I now think works better since chinese style images while intricate are simply colored so that the shading and bumps of the balloon work well. This kind of dragon is going to ask for too much detail work?

ya the less ridged balloon will work much better, allowing you to keep the form of the dragon much more. I agree that a chinese style dragon will look much better ... while having sh*tload of detail is cool, it's less cool if it's in one aspect (the dragon) leave the detailing for the scene as a whole 9like what you did with the basket and the ropes and such)

I don't see why you redid the balloon, I really liked your first version. In later versions you're making the creases of the balloon seem to harsh. Like the second version actually goes to a near black in the dips of the fabric and although the third, newest, version isn't as harsh as the second, it's still too dark I think. Something about that first dragon on that bright blue balloon really struck my eye, but the others aren't doing that.

I will revisit and work out the kinks on this design taking special notice of lar's dead-on observation.

Blick, I totally see what you mean. I did not realize I was becoming unfocused. Lar got it just right when he says "i feel the perspective of the balloon in general is being forgotten
about, as you're thinking about the little bulges too much. By this i

Sweet!
I like the new version a lot, the clouds and new dragon look great but i must admit that I really loved...
... that one's swirly snowy things :D the swirls make everything look so chinese, and although the clouds are also very chinese looking, I think the snowy, swirly stuff had a better effect. That's only my opinion (keep the latest dragon though, it's niiiiice.
...but wow!!! I've been quoted! :P
edit: it now strikes me... how the bloopers did you get the section intervals right?? From your grid sketch, it looks like it was fairly complex to do.

Awesome balloons=) Sea dragon a little flat due to the perspective ..or composition - closer to viewer parts considering balloon shape should appear to be relatively larger I think.

@ fool, yes in true perspective but iso it works slightly different since all dimensions are equal.
This update has some artistic license with some of the perpective lines. I can see now why nobody has attempted to draw iso perspective that slopes inward. It's mathematically impossible. Lesson learned after slaving for two days .
I think the main areas are blocked out so I will start to smooth it out, or what you kids call the AA

Any observation most welcome

To Jalonso: Well, I don't know how iso rules applyed to the dragons, but trick part is it should be distorted to look strait on the sphere. If you downscale ballons ribs from front to the sides I guess same could be true for the dragon as well.=) If you try to make just a circles all over the balloon you'll see how curves should work on sphere.
|
Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 04 December 2006 at 12:36pm
@sander, how so? @ fool, I actually understood that, lol
Took a ballon drew on it, then photographed and manipulated to the closest iso perspective based on the circle on the top of the balloon. The image isn't that different than what I had done freehand. I can see that some of the stretch caused by the curvature is most distorted at the edges and the bottom, but its not very appealing. I'll tweak my pixel balloon based on this and see what happens.

And just so no one jumps me for being off topic - I still like the green w/ clouds most, but I think with all that shading the clouds take away from the dragon - even with the red+gold, it doesn't stand out enough. So keep working Go- I mean Jal.

Back to battle my nemesis. Includes whole new dragon face and testing some simulated sclale textures on its back. This is looking a bit odd because these Chinese dragons are drawn with flat shading so it includes that. It must have the shading on the ballon also. Some minor liberties are taken on the shading in the places where it just looked wrong (tho right).

The the blueish tint you added to the dragon as well as the yellow tones in its belly make it really fit better with the color scheme of the balloon. The greens of the dragon prior were almost too harsh..... I love this most recent revision!... What will you do with it.... Hot air baloon launching from pixeldam??

That's realy awesome! The dragon in your last version realy fits on the
balloon. My only complaint would be the edge on the left side of the
balloon, there is a corner in there that looks kind of funny, and not
"balloon-round". at the blueish cloud under a green tail part.
Oh yea, and add a loving ISO-couple, enjoying their flight! :)

more work on this...

Now with AA edges, lovin' couple and palette refined to 51 colors. Color count is really excessive but since the brighter side of the balloon is so lit I found I had to add several blues to create the right lighting. This BG color is from Pixeldam's beach so I'm making it for that but will delete the BG for the gallery.

That shadow could never look like a circle unless the light was perpindicular to the ground plane and the lightsource shared the planier coordinates of the baloon.
Since you have a real life baloon model use a light to get the real shadow. If the shadow was directly under the baloon it and the light directly above it would be passable. You can't ignore the shadow shape when so much time was put into the baloon shape.

If the light is truely directly above the baloon the oval ellipse will only change size depending on the distance from the groun. Otherwise you will have to use a skewed shadow on the ground.
basically if the light is directly above the baloon it will form a circle aligned with the y axis if not, you get a skewed image on the ground not directly underneath. I'm not usre about the math involved here you might try skewing in photoshop and then aligning it with your grid. Or use a cad program to do some shadowing.
All I can say is having a oval circle shadow offset is really killing it. Everything else is perfect.
