Gang City [Working Title]
Platform: Flash 8
Genre: Beat ‘Em Up/RPG/Sandbox
Wanted: Sprite Artist(s), Character artist(s),
Sketch/Graphic Artist(s) (for title menu, etc.), Action Script Programmer(s)
and Designer(s).
NB: I will be involved in
programming/designing, but the project is large.
NB2: No designers who do NOT
contribute as artists or programmers (suggestions accepted, but will not be
credited as contributor).
Graphic Style: Something along the lines of Street Fighter
Alpha/Street Fighter II/Final Fight
Concept: A collaboration to design a large flash game
designed and contributed to by the collective group to eventually publish
online (such as, on NewGrounds).
Plot: You play the role of a teen punk in high school,
nearing graduation with nothing in your future, your older brother convinces
you to start up a street gang. At this point, you are introduced to some basic
‘gang activities’. This will be treated as a training level, if you will, and
will include basics like petty theft. Soon your brother will introduce you to
the ability to offer ‘protection’ (extortion).
The following day you receive a mobile phone call. Your
brother has been captured by a rival gang, your money has been taken as payment
for working on their turf, and you’re required to double the money as ransom
for your brother, but ‘you better not be caught working our turf to get that
money’. With no other resource for funds, you take it upon yourself to get your
brother back by force. This introduces you to the combat side of game play.
After recovering your brother, all but dead, and the money,
he convinces you to travel with him to Gang City,
a large metropolitan city filled with gangs, to make a real name for
yourselves. Your brother pays off the first month rent for an apartment. Here
is where the real game begins and becomes open ended.

Combat: Using the above commands fights progress in the
standard Beat ‘Em Up fashion. This is how you traverse the city in general,
although trams can be accessed to quickly move between districts. Training at
various dojos adds to your stats (punch speed/strength, kick speed/strength,
toughness, etc.) and allows you to learn special techniques and extended
combo’s which replace and add to standard attacks.
Gang Activities: The gang activities that could be open to
you would include:
- Extortion (Offering protection)
- Drug trafficking
- Pimping prostitutes
- Petty theft - beating up citizens to take funds and pick
pocketing
- Smash and grab robberies
Other activities:
- Learn techniques and build stats at dojos
- Purchase weapons from pawn shop
- Purchase drinks to replenish energy (depleted by special
attacks)
- Purchase food to replenish health
- Use prostitutes to replenish health and boost stats but
deplete energy
- Hire gang members
Gangs: Gangs control different districts, as represented by
a corkboard map in your apartment on the wall. Interacting with this lets you
view it full screen. Map shows tram lines, district divisions, and each
district is marked with a colour coded pin to designate a gang (as shown on a
key). Some gangs only control one district, others many. Gang controlling a
range of districts will have a different gang leader in all districts, as well
as a head gang leader who is unattached to a district, but will act as a boss
when all district leaders a beaten. Gangs each have a relationship status as
one of the following:
Allied
Friendly
Neutral
Rival
Enemy
At War
By default, all gangs are Rivals. Cooperative actions
include participating in drug trafficking (buying or selling), black-market
sales or purchases, use of their prostitutes (without pimping attempts), and
other friendly activities. These add to your star rating, listed below the
status, between -5 and 5 (negative stars are red, positives gold), in half
stars. Once five gold stars are reached you progress towards friendly.
Performing gang activities or attacking rival gangs earns
red stars\depletes gold stars. This works towards provoking another gang, but
is necessary to defeat a gang and take their turf. A gang is defeated when
their leader is killed or their control of all areas in any district is
depleted – i.e. you coerce all business to pay protection to you, all prostitutes
to be pimped through you and all drug traffickers are removed\working for you.
Once defeated, a number of members of the gang will remain as rogue’s
(attacking you randomly until eliminated) or request to join your gang.
