Nice to see you trying. Notice that everything in your mockup layout is created using boxes and boxy items. I would suggest making some pattern on the sky that is not boxy to add dynamics to the mockup. The green thing was not terrible just made of boxes too. Another thing to perhaps work on is to make Pikachu and Kirby stand out from the scene a bit more. Either thru contrast or oulining or some other solution you come up with. You might also keep your colors in check. You already have 20 of the 32 used up, might be trouble. The very darkest gray next to the black is a wasted color. 2 medium grays also might be eliminated. The 2 pinks that the arrow points two look the same, get rid of one. anyhoo, keep at it you're doing well.

Good improvement on the walls :) Play around with the contrast a bit. It's not 3D anymore so it would be harder for the player to see what's part of the background and what isn't. You can make this clearer by increasing the contrast on the parts where the characters can walk (the wooden platforms and the wall on the bottom). You should probably also increase the contrast on Kirby and Pikachu so they won't blend in with the background so much.

i can't really tell if i went overboard with contrast or it's just good. You tell me lol. Jal, thanks for thinking of sky patern idea...i will think of something at school today (maybe a gradient, or light symbol you can see ever 10-20 pixels or so).

added some clouds, took floor down some blocks on left. This has like 19 colors now. I say this is almost done...but i have so many other colors which i will use today.

I think the last ones are too dark. Remember that the background it's secondary, and what really has to show are the characters. You shoul work on that.

What I meant by my post is that you should only increase the contrast on the parts of the stage the characters can stand on. Here's a quick and dirty Photoshop edit based on your second to last version:

If you are trying to present foreshortening with the clouds and the scene is not set in the sky then the clouds should probably vanish toward the horizon rather than the zenith.

The blocks don't really need more for now, maybe later. Try making the menu items stand out more somehow. Kirby just doesn't stand out enough I think?
For that sky you could try adding things there like you originally had?
This is based on a real life 3D game so use whatever that game uses.

I think you should use the rest of the colours inthe characters. Make them bigger, make them better, make them crazier! (xD).
Really, you should make the pikachu bigger...

Ok, Pikachu is on a repawn platform which happens after they die...and they obviously blink. I changed % text, the other one looked horrible.

way too dark for such a sunny day i believe surt. but the color recycle is a valid point. volcom, perhaps limiting yourself to a maximun of colors per sprite(3-4 appears to be fine i believe) and the you can go easily with the rest od these in the BG. but do not abuse. its good that you can use up to 32 colors, but it doesn't mean that you must use all these 32 colors.
it will be way more easy to solve the contrast problem of kirby if you just placed him in front of the ligth(sky) background.
but, kirby's desing needs a revision. seriuosly, and no ofense, but he doesn't look a lot like him, expet because its pinkness.
finally... try to be more 'accurate' to the real game.

hmm IMO pikachu should be more readable he doesn't look like he just appeared >_> I prefer the first versions of pikachu, I would also search for some references to make it more smash bros.

What happened to some of the blocks in the bottom left corner, and the green tower top you had in one of the previous versions? Kirby looks a lot better now, but it looks like you forgot to improve his character portraits (the ones that show how many lives he has left). Also, the darker shade on Kirby isn't very noticable at 1x zoom. I think you should make that a tad darker.

I would add sparks in the air, or whatever those things were in the real game, to show that pikachu hit kirby. Or even a shockwave, etc. It'll give the scene a little more excitment.

Well you have too many lightsources.
Blocks are lit from top.
Barred window from top left.
Kirby from top left.
Pikachu isn't shaded.
And the platforms from the top-right.
If kirby were lit by the static he would be only one shade. So keep him. So, yes I think they should be changed. The sparks would flip it anyway so I don't know what you were saying there :P
Yes, please up the contrast on Pikachu.

Pikachu's anatomy looks off to me. I would look at some ref pics just as you did with kirby.
Shade Pikachu using the same light source you did with kirby. (meaning shade his chest and face)
The cloud under kirby looks like a platform that he's standing on.
The shadows cast by the orange platforms are inaccurate. Reverse theirangle.
Make the impact effect more prominent/dramatic. (and maybe even add a second lightsource highlight on pikachu and kirby caused by the effects.)

 . Now there is one main lightsource...the sun directly above. I have 31 colors now because i took darker shade off kirby...cuz its obvious when sparks are on you than it wouldn't be dark but lighter.
Those 'clouds' are rock platforms way back in the scene...just to have something there. To make sure i lowered it and switched its colors.

Waitaminute.... In the game, there's a mountain in the background with some sky, not sky with some clouds! And where did those blue platforms come from? Also, if the sun is directly above, change the platforms' shadows! If you get rid of some of the colors, you can make the green castle parts and make this more like the actual game.

You need FEWER colors. You can use different colors than Surt, but nonetheless it is a technically good edit that shows how you can eliminate colors. You have 32; he has 14. Maybe you don't like his CHOICES, but the NUMBER is better. 32 colors for what you have is ridiculous.

I managed to remove ten colourse without deleting how it looks. IMO the number of colours doesn't matter as long as they are used in a good way. But this is not the case, for example the darker 1P tone is a colour that you can delete with the darker pikachu yellow colour, and pikachu thunderbolt (the one in kirby) can be in only one colour because the difference between both colour is really small to actually see a difference. You can also delete the darkest cloud colour(the one down of kirby ), hmm you also have two light brick colour one grey and another one blue you can replace the lighter blue colour with the grey one and you will not see the difference. oh you need to make the two kirby face more readably by making the grey be darker( use the outline of those kirby for that)

You're doing it fine. it's an amazing improvement. Just compare this last one with your first one. It's seems made by to different persons!
I would give more contrast between the bright kirby colour an his shadow. i like the colours on your avatr more. And make some AA in the heart (use the kyrby's shadow, don't create another colour)

For the peice. Very nice update  Use some of those greys you have in the mountains. Use the browns in the platform Pikachu is standing on. Pikachu could have some of that brown, and that would knock it back down to 19 colors.
The heart container should be symmetrical and have a white outline:

Pikachus tail looks bent up and weird. Also you may want to show that pikachu cast that spark somehow.

i wouldn't call it a lightsource cuz thats not how it is the game...but its not bad.

k, I got a crit for you, hehe. See the mountains. Notice the is jaggy? Use the darkest blue or the medium grey to AA that a little. Just to smooth it out a little bit.

*Ahem* Moving on.
Actually the mountains should be lighter: as things recede they get lighter and bluer, no?
Remove the pink pixel that is on top of the kirby icon's head.
Change the darker yellow to an orange color.
Use a lighter blue to highlight the wooden platforms.
I liked the original text, I could see it and it looked nice.

I think the crate is shaded and colored a bit strangely for wood; I made an edit to show what palette choices I would use and to show one option of adding wood grain. Also, you can get rid of your yellow used on the 1P text and replace all instances of it with the yellow used on pikachu's shadows, and things should look better as well as use one color less.

You could probably use the highlight color of the crate on the platforms too if they're supposed to be brown.

Do what the monkey said. The mountains look great, and so does the rest of the sky. The platforms look weird, because they're supposed to be orange. Pikachu's tail: FIX IT! Try to add the green parts to the stage. The bricks on the wall with the orange platforms should be the same as the ones at the bottom. Pikachu's head looks a bit odd, and Kirby's lives look weird.

I was an idiot not to fix arrow and text before. I had it the same, then changed pikachu's contrast and forgot to change. Thanks for edit, grain/yellow look is tons better.
E-Bomb, the the brick on the tower are not supposed to be the same cuz you don't stand on it...(so it has little contrast, differing from the platforms and the ground). I didnt say this... i think it was AtomicMushroom
What do you mean by adding green parts to stage? Fixed basically everything both u said except green thing and tower (which is not supposed to be fixed).
----I've tried thinking hard on how making Kirby's icon look better...pillowshade or anything. Any ideas or suggestions?

*Smacks forehead* Sorry, I guess I'm being vague. I meant to change the color of the bricks on the bottom that are UNDER the ones you stand on. Sorry if I was unclear.

dude, i know what you meant...your still standing on the ones under. The mountains are colored the same as tower... Its just a lighter cuz it shows its not directly part of the scene and you dont stand on it...just the platforms.

nice, except if you ever watched pokemon or played this game i'm positive he dosn't let out blue sparks but yellow. Icon edit on Kirby is nice...i gotta add the cheacks on mine.
Your Pikachu is Smaller and more 'pikachu'. (but when i comes to size kirby and pikachu are basically the same in hight
Holy crud Jal, nice man. Tired of that beer? I love the impact, i will surly do something similar and with kirby to...(ofcourse as a ref.). The orange light on the blocks...i might only do something similar under the action, or i would put it on the tower blocks also.

Remember this is a 2D version of a 3D game not a clone. he sparks are not blue that is 'glow' :p
Your version is a tiled mockup so the clouds should be copy/pasted not all unique.

They are still about the same height And anyone that watched the anime/played the game knows that pikachu's ears are black and the tail is brown at the end

we'll its similar...on the clouds, i made 2nd top row all identicle. for the top, i think since they are big maybe they should be a bit diff. Unless you insist it should really be identicle.
I only shaded blocks were action was...looks cool to me.

hmm I would make the 0% and the 210% bigger since right now It is really hard to understand it, same goes for the 1P and 2P. You should AA the heart and improve the white outline since it is jaggy
