haha this is a pretty cool idea. I'm going to enjoy seeing this progress. Some things that I think you should work on though, is to make this thing look more robotic, since it IS a tank. I.E. The legs are chubby and need to be thinned or something. The tail (don't know the correct word XD) could look more mechanical. As far as textures go I am not the person to ask. I would say just to look up references, I.E. a tank, and base it off that. Can't wait to see an update.

Nice shading, but the lines are not smooth enough.

Are the wormlike things what's holding the plate-legs? If so, they're not really readable, and look wrong mechanically.

Check the incredible 3D creatures in http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=9591.0 - this thread , might give you some inspiration.

I think he is referring to the tail. Don't quote me on that, but that's what stands out to me. I think if you are truly going for a robotic feel, you should redo the tail.  I've never seen metal be able to bend like that.

I suggest doing something like this for the legs.

Here's what I meant about lines (yeah, the tail). Quickly done thing, no time to elaborate now.

First, smoothing of general curvature. You could actually go much further. The whole dynamic feel of the piece, the stingy menace, will actually depend on it!

Then adding notches to make the segment structure more obvious. But I think before that you'd have to clean the lines between those segments too, I didn't do that. Think perspective: they're all curved similarly, would you see it like that from ground level next to that thing?
Notice that this second stage may imply actual new changes to the lines. And there too you can go further. Are these segments rigid or not? Are they straight or curved? How exactly do they fit into each other? Do we get to see a mechanism inside?

All these points might make your piece richer.
