Awesome sprites, still hoping this game is as epic as the style here.

BTW I thought that the camper van was from 'The Walking Dead', never seen 'Breaking Bad', but on investigation I concur that it is indeed 'The Crystal Ship'

Fantastic characters and great style/animation........My only concern is that the screenshot looks incredibly similar to 'Super Time Force'.

I hope that the game isn't just a clone of that game, as although STF is awesome it would be a pity for these sprites to be wasted on a clone game as they clearly have enough uniqueness to warrant there own, original game.

Please tell me that the game will be something as original and delightful as these pixels truly are!!

Cool CPC visuals, great animation and moves, I agree with what has been said previously about the sliding motion as the main characters walk, however I believe this only adds to the overall retro feel, check out Cadilacs and Dinosuars, Alien Storm, Final Fight and D&D arcade games, this sliding motion always occurs, ecspecially when the player is being moved on by the system between encounters. I love it........there I said it and I aint ashamed, BBP's (Big Beautiful Pixels) are sexy!!

 Hi there failureboy,

I know the zoom function is on site, however with certain browsers there is some smoothing and blurring when using zoom plus I wanted a 4x pixel ratio for a retro feel on first view, without zooming = without the blurring!!

But I appreciate the comment.

Thank you.

Yeh the pixels are akin to the C64 graphic restrictions, (Double width/Single height) also the colours are the C64 pallete!

HawkTheSlayer @ 1/26/2009 22:24 commented on Werewolf Cards

Graphically these remind me of an old speccy game called valhalla, a kind of text adventure with slight animation silouette characters, (Dwarf enters from the east, dwarf takes gold, Dragon enters from the north, dwarf poops his pants (That kind of thing!)) oooooooh man! that game was awsome and bad at the same time (if that's possible?)

Any way, these are great little silouettes and are desperately crying out for minimal animation! and possibly a game, even a platform romp would be great with these guys, but a little more adventure rpg would be awesome!

I'm loving the villager 2 with his big, handle bar moustache and villager 5, you wouldn't mess with that guy, but my fave has to be Werewolf 3, he's a bit odd, but in a good way.

Well done!!

The weapon is simply a large metal ball on the end of a long pole, which, when swung violently can crush bone and cave skull with little problem, so a giant, minotaur sized mace then, I guess.

Cthulhu is cool and I like this 2D concept of Dark corners, however the main character in this piece reminds me heavily of David Tennent's portrayal of Dr Who, now Dr Who Vs Cthulhu, that would make a good game.

Well done.

Nice sprite, but there seems to be something wrong with the animation of his left arm, it almost seems boneless and flops limply as it swing back.

Apart from that one slight problem, the character looks good!!

HawkTheSlayer @ 9/28/2007 07:02 commented on Brave Minotaur

Well if you think that a Nosering chain linked to a nipple is a bit of a poor fashion statement, then you tell him he looks like a doofus (if you shout it from behind his right shoulder he might turn his head sharply and rip the damn nipple ring right out!!....ouch!) , you might want to wait until he puts that oversized skull crushing mace down first and be prepared to run like Seabiscuit!

No seriously, I don't know why I chose the nipple/nose  link, I guess it just felt right at the time, it's certainly a talking point for the picture though as you are not the first to ask that question.

HawkTheSlayer @ 7/8/2007 21:38 commented on Linkette

Fixed it, sedge suggested changing the colour depth of the image, so I saved it as a 24bit image in Graphics Gale, even though it is only using 16 colours (count them if you doubt me!) and should therefore technically be 4bit, the 4bit version wouldn't show up in IE, so there you go, Sorted!!

ThanX 4 the help with that Sedge!!

I am sorry for anybody that cannot see the image, I also have this problem using IE, I have posted to Sedge to see if he can fix it, in the meantime try using Firefox, IE seems to be part of the problem, or just click the broken  image link (Linkette!!) or use this: http://pixeljoint.com/ws/player.asp?u=full/linketteohmy.png to see it in the PixelPlayer!

Sorry about all this

Well iSTVAN it has been done before in the arcades, in 1987 with 'Dragon Spirit' from Namco and again in 1990 with the sequel 'Dragon Sabre', both pretty good old school shooters from a real Pixel era (Check out MAME), But all that said it hasn't been done nearly enough and this is great work, I love the muscles in the wings.

I can't believe the amount of FPS in the list, they cannot all be infuential to gaming history, maybe Wolfenstien, Doom, quake or Halflife and Halo possibly, but Halo 2 as well, I don't think so. I would agree with DayDream, Elite should definately be in the list and I don't recall seeing Tetris in there either, a definate milestone in the puzzle genre.

HawkTheSlayer @ 4/20/2007 02:46 commented on Kid Grim A.K.A Henry Arkwright

Why do you ask? He is just a character idea of mine from way back, never did anything with him though, the idea was that the grim reaper had let the toils of his career get him down a bit and hit the bottle rather hard, so due to a few too many drinks and a one night stand with a pole dancer, 'Zola', that he met at one of the sleaziest strip joints imaginable an accident took place, one which he wouldn't remember in the morning and one that she would try  to put right on several occassions, but to no avail, there was no stopping it, she was to be the mother of a little baby grim and here he is grown into a right little reaper, learning the ropes to one day follow in father's footsteps.

It was a game concept, but  I guess 'Death jr' kinda beat me to that one so the short answer to your question would be no, unfortunately.

A great piece of work, unbelievable if you managed it in five minutes, which brings me to the point, I don't think it is possible for anyone to create an original pixel piece of this size in five minutes, are you, by chance, exaggerating a little bit?

A fine pic none the less!

HawkTheSlayer @ 3/1/2007 06:00 commented on Mario Zero

I haven't read the comics I'm affraid grave, but as I described in the above comments, I was undecided on him being a younger Mario or son of Mario/Peach, in fact I kinda ditched both of those ideas, now I think of him as an alternate universe Mario.

Not that it would ever happen, but if there were a game, I imagine the Mario that we know and this version fighting together against Bowser and his equally alternate version too!!

I am really liking this, Great concept for a fighter, God only knows what sort of damage a guitar could do if combined with weapon fighting skills.

Brilliant colouring, smoothe as silk animation, what's not to like? I also love the little touches of the hair and the guitar strap swinging as as he rocks back and fourth.

I am sorry if I opened up a can of worms on this piece, It was not my intention to insult turbo bnx in any way and as I stated previously, I realise that this sort of pixelling requires a great deal of skill, However, I do stand by the fact that, when placed overlaying the original, it appears to have been traced, but I may be wrong and if so I apologize to turbo bnx.

Like a lot of other people here seem to be saying a reference to the original artist or artwork would have been nice and had Rodney Matthews not have been one of my favourite fantasy artists I may not have even questioned it in the first place, I'm staring to feel sorry that I did.

I do not discredit the work involved in creating large pixel pieces and would not label it as unskilled.

Sorry turbo bnx, you are clearly a talented pixeller and I did not wish to offend you, perhaps you just need to be more honest about your sources of inspiration in future.

This is the last I shall say on this piece.

user
HawkTheSlayer @ 11/7/2006 06:52 commented on Fil

I aggree with ptoing that it does involve a certain amount of pixelling skill, but still find it hard to believe the fact that it wasn't traced, as I pointed out earlier; this image, when placed on top of the original one found at Rodney Matthew's web stie is exactly the same size in almost every aspect. Now using a reference from a book or magazine would never result in this happening, maybe using a grid method on two windows; one with the original image and one to create in could possibly result in closer similarities, however, even then you would expect to see some degree of distortions in the proportions of the finished picture, even most of the demoscene pictures on the amiga and ST suffered from exactly this.

Try it yourself with Pshop or Graphics Gale, use two layers and see how closely they overlay.

Now if turbo bnx created this purely with pixel talent then I am very sorry for my opinion, but there appears too many factors to suggest that it required a little less effort than people may think at first.

user
HawkTheSlayer @ 11/3/2006 07:56 commented on Fil

I have to admit that the pixelling skills used here are highly impressive and I can find no fault with the background image, however I have my doubts about a couple of things.

You see, the elephant type creature, along with the tribal drummer seen riding it are part of a classic picture by the legendary fantasy artist Rodney Matthews (one of my favourite artists.), entitled 'Drum Boogie', , now I find nothing wrong with copying a picture into pixel format if you want to, but when comparing this picture with the original found on the official Rodney Matthews web site's gallery page, the two share some almost remarkable similarities.

By overlapping the two using layers in Graphics Gale it is clear that they are pretty much exactly the same size, which would be nearly impossibe if copying from an external source, indicating that the original was in fact used as a trace layer.

Now although I am impressed by the skill used to create this picure I find the finised result a little less remarkable than I first thought.

Nice attempt, however not truly spectrum as Evil-ville pointed out, only bright or dark colours can occupy any given 8x8 square, you have instances of, bright magenta and dark blue, bright blue and dark blue, bright cyan and dark green, bright green and dark yellow and also bright yellow and dark yellow in the same 8x8 square, this cannot happen on true ZX hardware, but hey.
