You seem incredibly busy so messaging you feels inappropriate, especially when it's about years-old tutorials.

Unfortunately these ancient tutorials, though "wrong" (mostly imprecise) in some respects, are still useful and easier to link to then most other sources. I just saw your recent redo, I'll be happy to link people that instead :D! Looking forward to more, in case you need even more motivation.

(I do wish you'd post these on your own website where they can be grouped by category and linked to without fear of the URLs changing every couple of years xP)

Thanks! I see these copies are from the Internet Archive, I guess there's no "official" place where they're still available? (Can't believe I didn't think to look there though, whoops!) Looks like I might have to save these locally and share them like pirate VHS tapes xP

Does anyone have Cyangmou's RPG projection tutorial series handy? It used to be on dA but has been removed. I was able to find the 4 parts, but 2 are low res, and it'd be nice to have it available for people in the future. While the terminology isn't as rigorous as his newer stuff, the presentation overall makes it great for sharing with newbies, I'd hate to lose it entirely.
Part 1, Part 2 (low-res), Part 3 (low-res), Part 4

The links in the description are all broken D: I know this is an oldie, but any chance of a reupload?

The first link (animated version on deviantArt) is available via the Internet Archive, for the curious: https://web.archive.org/web/20200524192527/https://www.deviantart.com/cyangmou/art/Gothic-Dieselpunk-Concept-Mockup-429180270

Fourthing that the tutorial is very useful as-is, and that minor tweaks should be sufficient. An improved version would of course be welcome if someone can find the energy to make it, but I don't think the old one needs to go away or be significantly changed.

eishiya @ 9/29/2024 07:53 commented on Big Bird

I link the PJ Art Tutorial to people pretty regularly, but there's one misleading bit in it that bothers me every time. Consider this my formal request for a tweak.

One bit says "Luminescence is especially relevant to pixel art: The brightness of a pixel or line determines how thick it appears", with an illustration demonstrating how a dark line on a dark background appears thinner where it's lighter. This is correct, but makes it sound like it's the *absolute* luminance that matters, when it's the *relative* luminance - on a dark background, it would be the darker parts of the line that appear thinner.
Rather than saying "the brightness of a pixel or line determines how thick it appears", I think it would be clearer if it said something like "the contrast of a pixel's brightness to the brightness of its surroundings determines how thick it appears".

Even though it's not consistent, the image still reads well, and the colours pull it all together :D

eishiya @ 6/22/2024 06:35 commented on Red Greeblack

When your full piece fits as the preview, you don't need to upload a full-size piece, PJ will just display your thumbnail as the full piece, without repetition.

Consider removing the yellow background here, and leaving it transparent. Such backgrounds are discouraged by the PJ rules, and in this case it makes the colours of the art look dull because the yellow is so bright. Makes it hard to look at the art for long too ):

I love the colours and the strong verticals and horizontals. The more naturalistic parts almost feel out of place compared to the confident linearity of the water and grass.

Non-pixel art effects like those lamp glows are generally not allowed on PixelJoint. Consider replacing them with hand-drawn glows that have the colours as carefully managed as the other parts of this piece. I think that would match the style of your art better, too.

eishiya @ 6/9/2024 11:49 commented on Big Bird

I notice the mismatch on a regular basis and it bugs me xP But it's the price to pay for dice physics, I think this compromise is more interesting than not having the physics, while still being easy to read no matter how the dice land. And though it may bother my purist eyes, it's still one of the best integrations I've seen.

eishiya @ 6/8/2024 06:49 commented on Big Bird

I've certainly stuck around here for way longer than I did on Twitter ;D (I've been ogling the Chatterbox plenty, just not had anything worth adding to the conversation or uploading to my gallery xP)

Saw Slice & Dice today, with art by a3um. I'm thinking of picking it up, had a nice time with the demo. (Edit: Got it. It's not quite what I was hoping for, but it's pretty good so far :D)

Trigonomicon: I'd heard of that ship! Very cool that you got to see it in person!

Also ooh, Name of the Rose adventure game, do want o:

eishiya @ 6/19/2023 09:38 commented on Big Bird

@Trigonomicon: This was a replay, my previous one was in 2020 or 2019, and the only thing I remembered was to pay attention to some things I ignored for a long time in my first playthrough :] My memory's pretty bad, so I just need to wait a while longer and I should be fine. But I want to play naaaaao.

eishiya @ 6/6/2023 11:43 commented on Big Bird

@Amorph: I played through Return of the Obra Dinn in one sitting yesterday by accident, and now I still want to play it but I need to wait until I've forgotten enough of it ;~;

Thanks for rehosting it! I was partial to the earlier version's layout myself though xP

Updated bookmarklet for anyone who needs it:

Javascript:window.location.href='https://www.linneart.com/pj?input='+encodeURIComponent(window.location.href);

(PJ keeps capitalising "Javascript" automatically, you may need to change it to lower-case. Who coded this lmao)

@skeddles: GitHub works for me :D Though I'd still love to see some decentralised options.
Have you considered OpenID? It's the oldest decentralised one. Unlike the other OAuth options, it requires just one code path to support any provider. The downside is there aren't very many people using it these days, in part because it's not very widely supported.
And if you're interested in something experimental, IndieAuth looks pretty interesting, and also provides a service for email-based authentication and lets people set up auth through either existing OAuth providers or through their own server.

eishiya @ 2/4/2023 20:33 commented on Toadette

No way to sign-up without using Twitter, Reddit, or Google, huh D: The gallery looks nice and I want to check it out properly, but I'm trying to move away from services such as those.

I imagine for the second size option, you meant "taller is allowed too"?

Please upload this at 1x, pre-zooming is against PJ's rules in most cases because the site has its own zoom feature.

eishiya @ 1/17/2023 12:07 commented on Just a metalic slime girl

Please upload your work at 1x when posting to PJ. The site has a zoom feature that works best with 1x images, so pre-zooming is against the rules in most cases.

By "(quasi) hexagonal design", do you mean the snowflake needs to have hexagonal symmetry, or is it enough that the canvas is hexagonal?

user

Please don't pre-zoom your art on PJ. The site has its own zoom feature, and pre-zooming clashes with it.

PJ has a bunch of different themes, so it's not mid-grey for everyone (although it is mid-grey for me, and is way more legible now!). And if the image has a transparent background, people can easily view the image in its own tab to see it on a different background.
