yeah, it's really fun, been having fun in the demoscene lately so hopefully I can do some GBC stuff at some point too :D Ironically I did many of these mockups in 160x144 GBC res before expanding them, and some read better at that aspect honestly.

The real GBC restrictions with BGtiles(8*4)+Sprite(8*3+A) 56 colors is quite fascinating too, A lot of the subtler stuff in some of these might be a bit too far. although the most colors in any tileset is 64 including alpha. but yeah probably 20+ unique palette combos tho and not like 16 haha. some titlescreens abusing sprite overlays on original hardware looked really dang nice.

I did 4 explorations with that tileset, many of them aren't used in what I included here lol Yeah I made the palette :) I improved one of the colors I hadn't used immediately after the deadline lol so I'll update that after the challenge, or if i remember include an updated version in the description at some point ^ ^

Also I've started to write my own SDL3 framework that uses a bunch of cool palettized stuff including fairly fleshed out 2-bit tilemap based stuff. which like this supports 90d rotation (GBC and most retro systems didn't explicitly support per-tile rotation without a mapper (or slower routines) that transfered swizzled ROM data into memory, or realtime 'superscaler' effects). So might use these or something similar for some free itch io games at some point (:

Thanks for all the lovely comments everyone!
No promises but I may make this or something very similar into a game at some point.

I'm in!

I like:

giraffes (regular or anthropomorphised* lol), macabre elements, dark fantasy, anything whimsical magical or liminal feeling, pre-modern cultures (if anything is remotely modern or urban mix with fantasy or clearly some alternate divergent universe), strongly stylized representations, anything rusty gritty grungy, creative uses of color, depictions of desolation but with strong creeping hints of beauty & anything surreal and or sublime.

I dislike:
anything too mundane, pop culture, memetic internet culture, modern warfare, anything political & anything gratitiously sexualized (tasteful nudity is fine).

(*my preference for anthro is qualified, ideally nothing furry-coded but oldschool fantasy <animal>-folk style)

fixed,  I don't even understand how that's possible when using Indexed color mode explicitly.

Edit: found out why, GIMP 2.99/3.0dev has issues when having layers with no alpha channel, it can screw up indexes and even use colors out of indexed palette including old variants of colors. really weird  saving and reloading the project file seems to fix it? but yeah it exports the errors if they are present

thanks for the concession, yeah I wouldn't have decided on it if it was for an individual weekly challenge, and ofc each comp'd piece is strictly 64x64. Figured the pros of less clutter in the voting and in my gallery were enough to justify it for this particular challenge.

@Weerdmeester glad it paid off, haha glad it works, I saw some dwarf drawings the arms had muscles on the muscles, not very anatomical but looks so rad, so kinda channeled that energy a lil, bulgin' n ripplin'

@Umbohr haha

@MoreOfAGoofus glad  oh yeah I can see that haha accidentally more appropriate than I anticipated

oh wow that's cool just looked it up  I had only seen something like that in the SegaSaturn/PS1 game Baroque, one of the NPCs is like that. hehe icky  I kind of find him cute somehow lol

Grimm_Dingo @ 11/12/2024 22:29 commented on Trigonomicon Tribute Challenge idea #1

@Trigonomicon ayy glad you liked it  yeah do feel it evokes a classic vibe, it's funny how this one came about, after importing the original pfp I saw the palette displaying wrong in the layer preview, and it looked really striking and cool so I just screencapped that and copied how it was remapped and ran with it.  actually i still have that screenshot here: imgur.com/8PPocp9

@Tipleloop ahh yeah I was actually going to animate it, at least in the preview but ran out of time.

I'm In!

Likes: anything eldritch and or surreal and or dark fantasy and or anything grimdark or grotesque. alternatively or in combination industrial punk stuff. or if it's too far out of your comfort zone; I don't mind idylic nature oriented stuff too (bonus if combined with one or multiple of the above in some way).

Dislike: anything too political, relating to real modern warfare, non-fictional violence, overly sexualized content (fine with nsfw as long as it's tasteful), anything too mundane.

thanks.

I was a bit concerned I made a mistake and made it worse by adding the rim lighting but glad it's still worthy of being considered gorgeous.

@EdnodiusGreenius perhaps they asked it if they were going to still exist within the year and the answer was "unlikely" would probably have a similar effect.

Jimi was an awesome ecclectic and eccentric individual for sure <3

@damicon yeah might get around to adjusting that, I settled on a dark band because I recall the other choices seemed to clash with surrounding colours.
