DukeDarker - I've drawn Yog-Sothoth multiple times over the years, always in different mediums, and felt that I had finally enough animation experience to properly convey my mental image of it. It's also always been orange to me, I have no idea why. The creature itself is literally a lovecraftian Horror, as in, it's one of the outer gods, mentioned for example in Lovecraft's story "The Dunwich Horror".

Victor Rojo - For this I switched between Graphicsgale and Asesprite, depending on what I felt more comfortable with at the time. The bg was done all in graphicsgale, the animation mostly in asesprite, palette and color control with gale, animation cleanup with ase.

specialmin - I was considering making it a series, the similarities between this and the last are accidental, but then I thought that a King in Yellow third one is kind of obvious. Just that one I find the motive hard to pinpoint for. And Nyarlatothep has always been my favorite but the hardest to decide on a visualization for, literal 1000 forms and all that.

CELS - Yeah I was wondering that myself, and trying it out, but I felt it took a bit of attention away from his actual face, since the brightest colors are currently all just in the area of his head and moon. Similarly with the patterns I originally wanted on the monoliths, without adding a 9th color they just redirected the eye too strongly I think.

Fantastic palette choices and clusters, great realism attempt that still feels immensely nostalgic somehow to me, really reminds me of early game memories.

I had a few photos I took when on the train when visiting family over the past years that I used as references, had them on my second monitor (mainly two, one for the clouds and one for the ground) that I eyeballed/referenced.

I however for technique reference took some other photos and looked at how they looked at different color reductions, which colors the algorithm deemed more important which time, at how many colors down which element's readability and texture broke down, and applied what I learned from that.

I tried to see if fiddling with the pictures I used as refs directly in any way would be helpful but honestly it wasn't, the gray-in-gray palette made the clouds look as if someone went crazy with the spraypaint tool at anything under 125 colors. But also looked at other pixel art, own older things, cloud paintings.. Genuinely, I spent an hour or two on the foreground, probably 40+ on the sky.

And all just because I didn't wanna use dither, dither is scary.

Thankfully no nasty flies on mine! I tried to just use the refs for understanding what the respective mushroom is about and tried to visually steer from them as far as possible so maybe we have a collection of different pictures of the same types.
