wtf kinda thinking is that? god, i am done with this whole argument. some of you make very good points in debates, then you come in here and say that you hate their marketing? that means you hate every product out there, because EVERY SINGLE COMPANY on earth does guerrilla marketing, not just apple. i am not some huge mac fan, i have never owned one and probably never will, but what you said even pisses me off.

guerrilla marketing is what sells products, plain and simple. it is everywhere. walk into a grocery store, those bright colors, items at the end of the aisle, bakery at the rear of the store, etc, that is all guerrilla tactics that are used. ford, chevy, honda, audi, they all use it.

besides, most of the marketing you are talking about was not done by apple, but by loyal users.

anyways, thanks to the few of you that provided real intellectual merit to this "debate", "argument", "discussion" or what have you because i will not be posting in here again. to the rest of you, remember what albert einstein once said "If A is success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. I'm going a bit off topic here but,

I've never been a fan of apple. They're still trying to fight a "war" that they didn't win 20 years ago. They've always been considerd the "designers" computer but I've never switched. '
It used to be Apple Vs IBM and they've transferred that to Apple vs PC which is stupid because Macs ARE a PC.

They have nice streamline designs, they need to give up the guerilla marketing and just focus on their promoting their products instead of trying to win a competition that doesn't exist. I'm also tired of them trying to market themselves as the "cool" persons computer and anyone that uses anything else is a nerdy business man. Sorry, I'll take the nerdy businessman over the mouthy brat any day.

Apple catches my eye with their snappy designs, but then slaps me in the face with their "holier than thou" marketing. I'll buy their products when they stop blatantly lying about what other products can and cannot do. I think this sums up how I feel about their marketing right now:

I don't care how durable the case is, the Zune is bull. And cases aren't THAT expensive. I bought a great leather one for just 10 bucks on Amazon. If you want some fancy schmancy designer case maybe, but a decent one doesn't cost that much.

The iPhone needs cingular because the random access voicemail feature needs provider's support... so Apple signed with cingular in order to sell the iPhone with all its features. It's explained in the keynote.
I think that all the other features will work with every provider.

I don't need a device like that, but I think that Torpedos is right saying:

The only tecnology of the iPhone that's new is the multi-tuch display, but the way as it is smart and well designed (I'm not talking of aesthetics) is revolutionary... imho.

Monsoon brings up a good point. Apple seems to think that it's totally cool to sell products with scratchaholic casings and then sell hip aftermarket "iPod covers". I would not want to drop an iPhone.

The touch screen isn't the ONLY thing that makes the iPhone awesome. This other phone doesn't have random access voicemail, google maps, customizable widgets, a full fledged browser, or rich text HTML email. Not to mention an ambient light detector or an ultra smart touch sensor. I doubt hardly it has ALL of the same features. Maybe some, but not all.

that phone really doesnt offer anything to set it apart. all it really is a touchscreen. it isnt any kind of smartphone, so it can only run java apps (maybe). there is a huge difference between a smartphone and a cell phone. i would never even think twice about that lg, it looks cool, but thats about it

This phone has nearly the same minimalist approach as the iphone and has all the same features of the iphone (so far). Information on it was released back in late 2006 (nov-dec), yet no one says anything about it. Apple releases a very similar device (I'm not saying they stole ideas), and it gets a huge amount of attention, that I personally think is unwarranted...

just because it meets those doesnt make it the right phone. it all comes down to usability. once i have the chance to use it and see if it works for me, then i'll consider it. when i began looking for my pda phone, i had over 10 models that were potential canidates, and i turned out only liking one.

i cant live without my smartphone, and since most of you are still high schoolers, you may not understand why. for the professionals out there, you know why. i can plug my phone into my computer at night before i go to bed, and in the morning i can grab it and it has all the emails i recieved and all my appointments synced. when i get a phone, i have requirements:
1. wifi - so i dont have to pay to surf the internet. also, there are technologies in the works so you can have your credit card info on your phone and transmit it to the store via secure connections. plus, i have already paid people at flea markets and trade shows via paypal using my phone...
2. applications - i have a windows mobile 5 on it, and i application unlocked it, so i can install anything i want on it. i have irc, games galore, opera mobile, etc.
3. syncing - MUST be able to sync with outlook or the like, so i dont have to enter appointments twice.
4. camera - you never know when youll need it...
5. mp3/video - i have 2gb in my phone right now... i have 4 movies and 200 mp3s on there, and still have room to spare. 300 is MORE than enough for me, i am never in a situation that i will need 5000 songs on an mp3 player because i would never listen to all of them
6. size - im not going to carry around a huge brick phone. i also prefer not to carry around an mp3 player, camera, phone, pda, etc. so i carry around a phone that does it all.
7. games - boredom can kill a person, and if im bored enough, i could kill bystanders
8. user friendly gui - a huge one. if i dont feel comfortable using it, i wont. apple has always done a good job of making user friendly gui, that is what i love most about them. i believe that the iphone will do just that.

most importantly, all of you are judging a phone that isnt even available yet. you havent tested it, held it, or anything along those lines. in order to judge a device, or anything for that matter, you need to test it. its like writing a movie review based on the ads for it, or yes, JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

i am in no way saying i am going to go out and buy an iphone the day it comes out, and im not saying i wont do it. i am waiting to get the chance to judge it the right way. besides, providers always provide discounts, so the price will probably be slashed if you upgrade or extend your service. so please, instead of shunning and praising a device before it is released, wait until it is released... people said that the xbox would fail before it was released, and people said the virtualboy would be the best system ever...

That sums it all up with one minor detail... Apple always slaps on a premium for making it better.

The iPhone is definitely close to what I would pay $600 for. In order for me to purchase this lovely product I would need the following to happen:

The digital camera should actually replace my digital camera -- at least on par with Canon's midrange offerings.
The capacity has to be closer to 40GB (20GB minimum for any consideration as an MP3/Video player).
No two year contract with a specific carrier.
No massive charges from the carrier (these haven't been covered, but I can almost guarantee there will a huge premium to fully utilize the phone as they demonstrate).
The touch screen needs to work flawlessly... there's a reason beyond technical limitations that we don't use touch screens on more devices -- it usually doesn't "feel" right.
The synchronization of data has to be open to outside applications. I'm a tinkerer and there's nothing I despise more than being locked into one application.
It has to be at least as durable as your average cell phone. I'm always fumbling and dropping my camera and my mp3 player and lord knows I've abused the shit out of my phone and they've all held up well.
Games, games, games. It doesn't have to be a DS replacement, but a half dozen puzzle/card games bundled in would go a long way with me.

Buzz, your arguments are funny. Apple has hardly ever really introduced any new technology as souch. Theyve almost always used existing technology in their revolutionary products. What makes them revolutionary is how they pack that technology together as a seamless user experience. I mean, they populized the GUI (they didn't invent it but actually bought the idea from Zerox), before the first Mac most computers were operated via command lines. There were MP3-players before the iPod. Hell, even Creative had a HD MP3 player before them, but they didn't do it right. User interfaces were crap and to this day none of the others have really got it as spot on as the iPod. The scroll wheel and the iPod interface, affordable pricing and agressive marketing really did change the way most people (in western countries) now want to listen to their music on the go. And in the end, has even sparked a new way of distributing music. That's a pretty big impact i'd say. Now the iPhone may not be as phenomenal as the iPod and the Mac, but it shure as hell packs a lot of technology in one sexy packet. Apple is good at getting things right, and the iPhone may well be the new iPod of phones/pdas. The technology may have been around for some time, but no one's utilized it before like Apple has with the iPhone. The prise point is actually pretty fair if you compare it with the other high end smart phone/pda/network peripherals out there. And featurewise those don't even stack up to the iPhone. Besides we're bound to see the prices go down by the second generation at least :)

I owned a shitton of MP3 players before the iPod came out, and I didn't see what all the hype was about until I actually owned one. It didn't really do anything differently, it just thought differently about the things it was doing. Same for OSX, they just took the basics of an operating system and rethought them and came out with something beautiful (that's complete opinion, though, I know people who despise OSX). Sorry if my tone in that last comment was grouchy, I just.. I really hate my phone.

Aleiav - Yeah, I think that the iPhone is aiming for younger people as well as the business class. As a young business-person, the idea of having one of these is amazing. I don't think it'd ever leave my side. Right now I have an iPod, my crap Chocolate phone, a separate GPS unit.. and the idea of having all of those things, plus the functionality of a PDA, in one unit? That's really exciting to me. But I definitely understand why some people wouldn't be down to pay $500-600 for something that they'd only use as a phone.

I guess I'll go ahead and explain myself a bit more.
I've seen web browsing on my stepfather's Blackberry. It's pretty much crap. The browser on iPhone looks amazingly sophisticated. The email abilities is also extremely sophisticated for a phone. The address book looks so much better than on my phone, not to mention the ability of a keypad and syncing your contacts with iTunes. That would be so much easier even for me to set up. The conference all abilities as well as the small and unobtrusive bluetooth piece is also extremely impressive. Also the random access voicemail is definitely a revolutionary feature that not even Blackberry has. The flick scrolling is amazing, as well as the pinch zooming. Also WIDGETS! Widgets on a phone! Widgets are great because you can get them customized, which I'm sure the phone has the ability to. A phone running an operating system, while it may not seem like a big deal, seems amazing to me. Not to mention google maps right on your phone! You could search for a pizza place close and give them a call with one tap. That's also amazing to me.

I don't think the iPhone is really aimed for people like us, the younger generation. But I do know it would be IDEAL for buisness people, like my stepfather, who wouldn't have or need 25 GB of songs on one device and would only need a couple of videos for a buisness flight or something.

I think that the keynote address really explains all the features on the iPhone clearly and argues it much better than I do. I think, even though I wouldn't necessarily use all of the features and might not buy it myself, it's an astounding product.

Let's get some things straight:

A. I don't praise the Chocolate at all. I personally don't like it, as family members have had problems with theirs. I was simply using it as comparison of technologies, since 75% of the people I've talked have never seen an mp3 phone or a touch screen phone...

B. I would never buy the Zune, use the Zune, or reccomend the Zune. Again, I was just trying to show the technologies it used, that people seem to be amazed about, just cause Apple is doing it. Personally, I own an Archos, and wouldn't think of owning anything else.

C. I understand the convienence of a functional, all-in-one device, that Apple is trying to market here. I also understand that devices such as PDA's sell at similar prices as the iphone will. However I just can't bring myself to think that all that it offers is worth the price. I'd much rather purchase a extremely functional mp3 player, such as my Archos, that does almost all these things, and spend a decent amount on a nice phone with PDA capabilities, spend less money, and just have to deal with one extra thing in my pocket...

That's my two cents...just saying.

I have a Chocolate. It's a piece of shit - the touchscreen is worthless and I've had to replace it twice because it dies every three months. Listening to MP3s on it is painful - not only do I have to buy separate cards for storage, and transfer MP3s from computer to card to phone, but the interface is ridiculous and clunky and slow. I've wanted a new phone since the day I bought my Chocolate.. if you look up consumer reviews, you'll find that I'm far from being the only one.

From my experiences, I think the Zune is a joke. I've used one, I've tried to install the software on my sister's computer, and I will tell you personally that it's overhyped crap. It might get better with future generations, but it's garbage right now.. the rights management is insane (far worse than Apple's), the software crashed my sister's computer twice when I was installing it, it's unnecessarily large, it's ugly and cheap-looking. And its one saving grace, the idea of sharing songs & playlists, is useless. Not just because nobody else owns a Zune, but because of the restrictions of actually using the sharing system.

Are there PDAs with similar features? Yes, but not all of the features, and they're not much cheaper than the suggested price. The excitement, at least in my eyes, comes from the fact that Apple has managed to give people a really beautiful, elegant, friendly, all-in-one solution to the trouble of having to buy & carry around three or four different devices.

I think the problem is the fact that Apple is calling it the "iPhone," because it automatically makes people think they're paying $500 for a phone. But, like a lot of the reviews have said, the "phone" part of it seems to be the least interesting. It's the ultimate portable device.

I just can't stand how people are drooling over this phone..., theres nothing that spectacular about it.

Touch screen phones are nothing new, nor are mp3 playing phones. In fact, the Chocolate, has both as well. Granite, it doesn't have the hard drive size, but I digress...If there is any reason to gawk over this phone, those aren't the reaons, even though thats what most people, especially the ignorant kids at my school carry on about. As far as the tilt screen functions, it's nothing new really. The technology has been around for about 8 years now, seen mostly in digital cameras. You can even see it more recently with the Zune. The PDA capabilities of this phone don't really strike me as anything special either. I've seen phones with just as many features or more.

The only thing that really make this stand apart at all is the fact that the screen cuts off while your talking, and the multiple touch capabilities. Though these aren't huge things, they are nice touches that make it more convienient.

Basically, I don't hate this phone, but for the features, price, and capabilities of other devices on the market, I don't see what all the excitement is about.

I've had a couple of MP3 phones, and all of them had such clunky, slow interfaces that I never used them as MP3 players. And of course there are PDA phones, but there aren't any PDA-MP3-camera-GPS-OSX-etcetc phones, let alone any which are as beautifully designed or interfaced.

Also, as far as the Accelerometer technology goes, I can tell you from experience that any phone which uses touch-sensitive technology would benefit greatly from the things that Apple has done with it. Almost every day I have to interrupt a conversation on my phone with "oh, fuck, sorry, just a second" because I hit the touch-sensitive area with my ear and it launches into some other mode. Not to mention the battery life that the feature will save.

The multi-touch technology on the phone is really useful in a lot of ways other than the wow-factor of being able to scale photos and organize shit. Read up some more on the things they're doing with it, it's crazy.

Well, the touchscreen technology is pretty revolutionary for a lot of reasons.. especially because it's multi-touch.

The price tag is ridiculous if you think of it as a phone, but if you think of it as a phone AND pda AND camera AND iPod AND gps nav system AND a mini-osx capable of running various widgets, then it makes more sense. To me, at least.

I think it's pretty worthless. I'm good with listening to music on my CD player (at full quality), and even if I were to purchase a cellphone I'd probably only be using it (a cheap one, at that) for those emergency situations like my parents always tell my sister to. As for portable video and internet, they just seem pointless to me. Especially when computers are virtually everywhere these days. Don't get me wrong, this would be cool to have if the pricetag were more along the lines of the DS' (which has a totally REVOLUTIONARY touchscreen, not sure if you knew about that).

And as the keynote says, most of them don't use it for mp3 playing cause it's crap so they end up buying an iPod too. This is an awesome NEW iPod WITH a revolutionary web browsing applet and phone. blackeye, because nokia never raises the bar, they just follow the pack like all the other companies do. apple atleast tries to set their product apart from the others... and as for way to expensive, look at some of the other phones out there. nokia has 1 phone that retails for 700 right now that plays video and mp3 as well that at most can hold 2gb.

i just paid 325 for my new phone only because it is a pocket pc phone. i only pay the price if it merits it, like my phone... it is a pocket pc and a phone. with the iphone, its an mp3/video player with alot of storage, and is basically a mac smartphone. if i could afford it, i would probably get it...

Considering that the hard drive is only going to be eight gigabytes max is depressing, especially with the video functionality. That 8 gb won't get you very many episodes of the Office ;-)

However, the phone itself is undoubtebly impressive! A tilt sensor? A multi-touch screen? My GOD!

I heard that the next Zune will be amazing, so I can't wait to hear from Microsoft. It seems that the original Zune was only in development for 6 months, think about what they can do with some more time.
