Super Mario 2 stolen?

News Details

Seems someone has discovered that the Mario 2 released for the NES was infact stolen!
It was an exact ripoff of a game called Doki Doki Panic.

Click here to see what I'm talking about.
Now if you don't want to hear the guy bash Mario 2, and straight to what I am talking about.
Then skip right to 6mins and 30secs into the video.

You will then see the truth about Mario Bro's 2.

that is incredibly old news, and as previously stated, not really stolen since doki doki was nintendos property to begin with.

Anyone see the new AVGN?

OMGFossil (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 8/26/2007 2:55:29 PM

Wolverine (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 8/26/2007 1:26:34 PM
Still got me a Nintendo mag from late 80's around here with that info in, and a Super NES mag that said the same when Mario All Stars came out.  Personally I never liked Doki Doki or SMB2.  By far the weakest Mario games of the original bunch.

EDIT: just watched the video.  waste of time.

Varock Shade (Level 7 Underboss) at 8/26/2007 1:20:23 PM
Quar, that says somthing about how import mario apparently is to many people, as is nintento...

iLKke (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 8/26/2007 6:22:19 AM
Shit, I'm gonna steal my own pixels ang get fucking rich!
Now why didn't I think of that one before?!

AdamAtomic (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/25/2007 7:20:58 AM
No, he could NOT have gotten rich.  The thing was built on highly specialized equipment found only in laboratories, and used analog technology.  Much like Space War, it is a fascinating but dead branch on the tree of video game history.  Space War at least inspired Bushnell to some degree, and was a good learning experience for him.  Higginbotham's experiment was unknown to Baer and Bushnell.  If you want to read about the real Pong controversy Ralph Baer is a good place to start!

zAk (Level 2 Quiet One) at 8/25/2007 5:15:36 AM
Well, yea - but talking about old games is so interesting! :D I have a book called 'Supercade' by Van Burnham. In it I found that Pong started out in 'the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor' (a nuclear research lab!) Long story short, one of the scientists, Willy Hinginbotham created 'Tennis for two' just so that the visitors wouldnt be bored with static exhibits. He never wanted to make money and never patented the game. So the guy who made Pong, could have easily get rich... Now, i dont know if this is something new to you guys but i thought itd be worth adding

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/25/2007 1:16:58 AM

Let's go for the 100th comment mark!  Wheeeeee!!!

cidsa (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/24/2007 3:46:23 PM
How is this news?
This has been known for years and years. Miyamoto worked on Doki Doki Panic and it was decided that instead of the actual Mario 2, we'd get an edited version of DDP. Personally, I prefer our 'fake' Mario 2 over the real one. :P

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 8/23/2007 2:53:10 PM
You people have to really get your shit right.

Nintendo did not steal anything at all, they merely reskinned and altered one of their OWN games for the Western market with SMB2.

Also did Nintendo NOT STEAL Tetris. Pajitnov did not get money for the first Tetris from Nintendo because he was employed by the Soviet government and they cashed in on him. He is mentioned in the credits of the GB game and also lateron when he moved to the US worked on several other Nintendo puzzle games and founded the Tetris Holding Company, so I am sure he now made enough money of it.

The thing with PONG is a bit more shady. The first version of that was made in the mid 50s. no clue if the dude that made it got anything from Atari. I doubt that one tho.

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/23/2007 11:40:07 AM
Get over of your get over it!

Go on people.., nothing happened here!

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 8/23/2007 10:44:32 AM
GET OVER IT.

ben2theedge (Level 1 Jukyu) at 8/23/2007 6:11:47 AM
Lol, when the guy in the video says he "did some reasearch", what he basically means is, "I went to wikipedia."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yume_K%C5%8Dj%C5%8D:_Doki_Doki_Panic
Far more informative than that video. Apparently Miyamoto had much more involvement in Doki Doki Panic than he did in the "real "Mario Bros. 2!

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/23/2007 1:27:37 AM
Well, Atari got off with stolen game idea -- Pong. And Nintendos moneymakers stole Tetris.. Company owners always scam those who actually invent and make the games, they are just interested of the bucks.
And SM2 wasn't stolen, I believe. As someone already pointed out, there might have been agreement, otherwise this thing wouldn't be unnoticed. They didn't have a proper game but they had a selling title and so they went with that. Just to scam people and make bucks..

iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) at 8/22/2007 11:28:44 PM
Crime solved. Case closed.

50th comment we get the point everyone stop posting and get over it

OMGFossil (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 8/22/2007 8:46:18 PM
angry nintendo nerd sucks

skeddles (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 8/22/2007 5:19:26 PM
I agree with AdamPlays. The second he said "this game has ass written all over it", I though of our good friend the angry video game nerd. He reviews games, swears a lot, and has stupid side skits. Same as AVGN! Except avgn is funny. That was bad. But at least it uncovers the truth. But I bet he wasn't even the one to do it. He probably read something online, and just turned it into a video.

zAk (Level 2 Quiet One) at 8/22/2007 4:12:27 PM
Well whatd you expect of a review of an old game? Something new? The guy is a bit heavy on the jokes, but other than that i enjoyed his video, and this is news for me too.

AdamPlays (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/22/2007 3:52:25 PM

Ya he shouldn't be accusing people ripping off others when he himself is just ripping off Angry Nintendo Nerd.

Froli (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2007 3:36:19 PM
Heh the reviewer is just one of the clones of angry nintendo nerd/james nintendo nerd.

ceddo (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 8/22/2007 3:10:12 PM
Guys, chill out. Don't get all "This isn't news, I heard this eight YEARS ago!". It may not be news for you, but it is for me - probably for some other people too - and it's pretty interesting.

note: referring to the first few couple of posts

OMGFossil (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 8/22/2007 2:35:49 PM
mario sucks

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 8/22/2007 2:20:00 PM
Its all about Sonic Vs Mario on the Wii.

Quar (Level 3 Stalker) at 8/22/2007 2:12:51 PM
How this managed to get over 40 comments is beyond me.

AdamAtomic (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2007 2:00:40 PM
Yeah this is the oldest news ever :P  and as many other posters have said, "ripped off" and "stolen" are completely inappropriate in this case!

Varock Shade (Level 7 Underboss) at 8/22/2007 10:11:46 AM
a lot of comments on ths one xD - anyway, i dont like the entire series of mario... i dont like the kind of fantasy they use, and i dont understand the story behind the games (maybe cause i didnt even try to find out what the stories are about in each game), and im more a fan of racing games...

Noveroth (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2007 10:02:09 AM
Actually they ripped it off twice...

Panel De Pon became Tetris attack, then Tetris attack became (pokemon) Puzzle league.

Jellysauce (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2007 9:30:52 AM
EDIT: never mind....

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 8/22/2007 8:53:01 AM
OMG! NINTENDO RIPPED TETRIS ATTACK TOO!

Flydian (Level 1 Jukyu) at 8/22/2007 8:43:06 AM
Even if it is old news...

I can't go around posting the same pic under two different names. It's misleading.

Das spiriter (Level 1 Thug) at 8/22/2007 8:28:48 AM
when i was a little kid i tried to play super mario bros 2, but i never  made it to the end of the game, beter saying: i have never saw the end of the game. it looked like it was endless...
man, what a waste of childhood...

( by the way; i thought doki doki painic riptoff smb2, not the opposit. )

schrumpfkopf (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/22/2007 7:56:17 AM

im sure there is something we dont know - i mean its very obvious and the Doki-Doki guys surely would have made more $ by suing Nintendo then selling there own game.

I bet there was an agreement of some kind

ben2theedge (Level 1 Jukyu) at 8/22/2007 6:04:36 AM
I knew this when I *played* Mario 2 as a little kid.

*EDIT* Holy crap... it's another one of these "ROFL I r maek fun of teh NES gaemz I r l337!" youtube shows. If I ever find one of these that's actually original OR funny I will eat my Nintendo. Without butter.

Mille (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 8/22/2007 5:28:56 AM
Uh.... I knew that... but somebody said to me that it was not a rip but a different version of the same game cause the original was to hard for europe and us...

|SOLIDUS| (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/22/2007 5:01:26 AM
you didnt know this? its been around for years, oh well, super mario 2 was good, but the japanese version, the actual sequel is so hard, its insane, try it.

Gas 13 (Level 9 Federal Agent) at 8/22/2007 4:02:05 AM
Super Mario 2 Stalin.

This wasn't even news in the 80s

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/22/2007 1:35:06 AM
Greatest review EVER.

Blueberry_pie (Level 7 General Manager) at 8/22/2007 12:53:39 AM
"This was my most time consuming episode to date due to the extensive research involved."

This SMB2 review is way better.

LET'S ALL GANG UP ON SOULY THEN

:/

Jellysauce (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/21/2007 6:30:18 PM
this news is older than old. its not even news. its basic knowledge if you know anything about mario.

Kaiseto (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/21/2007 6:16:54 PM
Sorry if it seemed like and insult. Wasn't meant to be.

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/21/2007 6:15:27 PM
Don't tell me that it's old news.
It's not my fault that I just happened to run into this today and not when it came out.

Kaiseto (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/21/2007 6:11:40 PM
... Uh, this is pretty old news. Hell, it's been on WIkipedia for quite awhile. It's not theivery so much as Nintendo trying to release Doki Doki Panic in the US. They knew people wouldn't buy the original japanese game simply translated into english, so they edited it to be similar to an already popular game series in America.

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/21/2007 6:09:34 PM
Well touché, Shigeru Miyamoto can do whatever he wants with his own work.
Seems I didn't look into this as much as I had thought I had. ._.;

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/21/2007 5:53:52 PM
@Soup: So X-Com: Terror from the Deep was "Stolen" from "UFO: Enemy Unknown"? Everyone knows it was more like a "patch" than a sequel, but still...

Soup (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/21/2007 5:49:18 PM
A game NINTENDO made was stolen to make another NINTENDO game! Stolen is toally the correct term

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 8/21/2007 5:48:22 PM
Actually yeah i did have deja vu while watching that.

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 8/21/2007 5:19:12 PM
Yeah.  I remember seeing it mentioned on G4, or something.

Domobot (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/21/2007 5:15:27 PM
This news is old, so very, very old.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 8/21/2007 5:10:06 PM
i knew it

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/21/2007 5:09:37 PM
Well, according to Wiki, the game designer for DDP is Shigeru Miyamoto, who happens to be the Mario designer too. So "stolen" is not a word I would use...

Tarenken (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/21/2007 5:04:30 PM
this reminds me of that game with the floating Mr. T heads...

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 8/21/2007 4:57:34 PM
Aaaaah, nice one HMC.

Morgan cook (Level 4 Deputy) at 8/21/2007 4:56:41 PM
It's all very confusing, i like the movie, and i think mario stole the idea because it was a good one and the other game wasn't famous enough so mario wouldn't think that people would find out.

HMC (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 8/21/2007 4:52:09 PM
Why the hell do I keep seeing this video spread across the internet recently? I thought everyone has been aware of this for most of the last decade at least. This guy is also the most annoying reviewer ever. He also fails to realize that Toad is the fastest and strongest character. Also, it's only really fair to point out Mario 2's uniqueness in hindsight, since at the time it was only the second game in the series. Plus, SMB2J was downright cruel in terms of difficulty. I think it's probably better that they didn't bring it over. Lastly, Doki Doki Panic was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto anyway, so I wouldn't really consider it thievery.

soda (Level 9 Vice President) at 8/21/2007 4:50:03 PM
I don't like 2.

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 8/21/2007 4:49:31 PM
Everything up to the last pixel was stolen by Nintendo.

OMGFossil (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 8/21/2007 4:46:33 PM
