Pixel Art Challenge: 7even Knights

News Details

Pick a number from one to 7even below.

Pixel a medieval knight* (yes, we know, the page and the squire are not technically knights yet :p)
from one of the 7even titles and palettes (no mixing around).
(This portrait may be realistic or cartoony.
It may be a game sprite, a stand alone piece or a scene (this may include a background)

RULES
• Must use the 7even colors in the palette
(no black and white).
• You have 7even days to complete the challenge
(not 7even days from when you read this or begin pixelling. Sunday at midnight)
• Canvas Size 7even pixels by 7even pixels
(jk, 100px x 100px exactly)
• No Transparency allowed.
(a perfect square full of opaque pixels)
• No animations.
(nothing moving but motion may be implied)

In case its not obvious this challenge comes from 7even

This week also has a background competition, the first 7even members
with a stupid question will be eligible for a 7even day and 7even night vacation to...

...BANSVILLE!!!

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

Sweet. Thanks Jal.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/23/2008 10:14:19 PM
But I can see the 7th color now.
Maybe quit the browser and restart or empty the cache?
Trust me its on there now.

Wiredgirl (Level 2 Hired Gun) at 3/23/2008 10:12:54 PM
I'm having a devil of a time editing the barbarian entry I submitted. I've uploaded the change with the extra color I missed several times, but the correct version fails to show up in my gallery or the challenge. I've refreshed the webpage, so I know that's not it.

Thoughts?

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/23/2008 10:12:44 PM
You did an awesome job 7even, you really did

7even (Level 7 Assassin) at 3/23/2008 10:02:08 PM
About 2 hours left and 86 entries so far... Most entries ever! O_O

iLKke (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 3/22/2008 10:16:58 PM
So many great entries, we could make a card-game out of this one!

Blackbeltdude (Level 2 Kukyu) at 3/21/2008 10:35:27 PM
Try PNG... I can never get GIF to work with Paint. If that doesn't work... try this site:

http://media-convert.com/

JonnyBoy (Level 1 Private) at 3/21/2008 8:44:55 PM
When I convert the file to a GIF the computer always dithers all the colors from the challenge. Any ideas of how I can stop this from happening?

Acherhar (Level 5 Soldier) at 3/21/2008 4:02:24 PM

Great challenge 7even, seems you struck a sweet spot :D

A.B. (Level 8 Cannibal) at 3/18/2008 11:31:50 AM

Do I have to pixel the whole knight, or can I pixel just the helmet/leg/finger/etc?

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 3/18/2008 9:30:14 AM
can we submit more than one entry?

Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 3/17/2008 9:30:33 PM
...yes, but what in nature holds true to one ramp, let alone two separate beings of different race to the same ramp? If you could make, say, a fallen knight (with its palette) taking on a beastie (with the purple palette), then we'd be talking. Doing both on the one palette is a whole lotta purple.

The rest of the palettes look manageable, though.

That being said, it's called the weekly CHALLENGE for a reason. An' it's a good one, but I sure as hell am not gonna make any beastie :O

7even (Level 7 Assassin) at 3/17/2008 9:14:24 PM

You're limiting yourself too much. Why should you make skin with a skin color? Why would show skin? Why can't a beast be purple? Why making the beast for the rider when it's so much interesting making just the rider look like he COULD TAKE on a wild beast?

I think I'm giving too many tips :o

Blackbeltdude (Level 2 Kukyu) at 3/17/2008 7:03:36 PM
I think if there's a lack of skin tones, you could always just go for something more surreal...

But yeah, the more limitations there are in something, the more creative you've got to be.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 6:21:36 PM
No flesh tones = challenge
pixel with those colors and make me see flesh and my vote is yours ;)

*I'm not breaking down nor going postal, I will most likely go 'nucular'

Hairyu (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 3/17/2008 5:30:03 PM
I think this has been the best challenge post/comments so far :D

Feron (Level 5 Sniper) at 3/17/2008 5:02:48 PM
Why are there no flesh tones in the royal guard, beast rider, and squire palettes? also, why the horrid purple ramp for the beast, what beasts are purple? nice idea though, hopefully ill find time to have a go.

surt (Level 10 Maniac) at 3/17/2008 3:50:44 PM
When Jal has a break down or goes postal (whichever happens first)?

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 3:11:38 PM
When are we going to disable commenting on challenges?

Dennis (Level 7 Captain) at 3/17/2008 2:55:11 PM
Hehe, roger that on the beast thing. Though technically, I think that everything which is not human is called a beast, even something as un-fantasy-ish as an ordinary horse. :P
Anyway, I decided to try doing a plain human.

tomic (Level 10 Lieutenant General) at 3/17/2008 2:18:31 PM

serious attempt to win that background competition and stop everybody else from asking stupid question again for ever:

can i pixel a firefighter instead?

soda (Level 9 Vice President) at 3/17/2008 2:05:19 PM
Awesome challenge.  I'm doing this one.

7even (Level 7 Assassin) at 3/17/2008 1:45:54 PM
I just meant that the term beast implied a possible fantasy theme for the whole piece, not just the creature s/he rides or the knight himself/herself ;)

7even (Level 7 Assassin) at 3/17/2008 1:42:21 PM

Usually, it's a knight who quit following his Order and probably began acting by his own will.

Acherhar (Level 5 Soldier) at 3/17/2008 1:36:18 PM

jal can't spell "seven" :p

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 1:24:48 PM
g00d b0y

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 3/17/2008 12:25:46 PM
I 3ink I am g1g 2o go 4or the beast rider.

Reo (Level 9 Executioner) at 3/17/2008 11:48:51 AM
Or a holy knight that lost the way of god, like a fallen monk.

MashPotato (Level 6 Made) at 3/17/2008 11:47:07 AM
I think it's like a fallen angel--a knight who's fallen from grace.  Or maybe it's a knight who fell in battle.   If it doesn't say, so interpret it however you want

zAk (Level 2 Quiet One) at 3/17/2008 11:40:11 AM
The Beast Rider and Fallen Knight reminds me of the Baby Snatchers from Monty Pythons "And Now Something Completely Different"

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 3/17/2008 11:39:36 AM
very 5unny. Seriously, what is it?

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 11:35:05 AM
pick one of the other 6ix options

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 3/17/2008 11:26:55 AM
what exactly is a fallen night? A knight who fell?

Stickman (Level 4 Deputy) at 3/17/2008 11:03:07 AM
Poor jal

Reo (Level 9 Executioner) at 3/17/2008 10:52:51 AM
isn't 100x100 a bit small?

Dennis (Level 7 Captain) at 3/17/2008 10:43:32 AM
To me, a beast rider is someone who rides a beast but is not necessarily a beast himself. However, I don't want to fight and nitpick about this. I just take it that we may do a fantasy figure that does not need to be human to match the rules.

7even (Level 7 Assassin) at 3/17/2008 9:54:20 AM
A Beast Rider rank kinda implies that, don't you think? (:

1up (Level 5 Detective) at 3/17/2008 9:52:02 AM
WHY GO TO BANSVILLE WHEN B& L& IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET AND EVERYTHING IS SO MUCH BETTER THERE

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 9:52:01 AM
To quote the challenge rules:
"(This portrait may be realistic or cartoony.
It may be a game sprite, a stand alone piece or a scene (this may include a background)"

realistic = human
cartoony = fantasy, stylised

*you guys are gonna miss me when you all collectively kill me 9.9

Dennis (Level 7 Captain) at 3/17/2008 9:43:44 AM
<serious question>Does the knight have to be human or may we choose to put in any type of (well known or self created) humanoid fantasy creature?</serious question>

Opacus (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 3/17/2008 9:41:29 AM
Who came up with the challenge idea?

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 3/17/2008 6:57:47 AM
So, I must use 7 even colors? What counts as even? Contrast?

Will I recieve some kind of icon in my prizes list if I happen to winn this background competition?

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 6:29:40 AM
7 colors, the ones shown ONLY >:(

surt (Level 10 Maniac) at 3/17/2008 6:16:59 AM
Stupidest question yet: "Must use the 7even colors in the palette" does not preclude the use of other colours, though I suspect that such a preclusion is indeed the intent, so may this be amended so as to more explicitly inform?

skamocore (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 3/17/2008 5:57:11 AM
can you ban me twice in a row?
I'm wondering if this counts as a third stupid question...it has a question mark at the end of it?

surt (Level 10 Maniac) at 3/17/2008 5:42:26 AM
Does this count as a stupid question?

Stickman (Level 4 Deputy) at 3/17/2008 5:17:03 AM
But Jal.....are we allowed to rotate the canvas?

JUST KIDDING!!!!(in before "Bansville")

Very clever challenge this. It's nice and small so hopefully I'll have time to do something.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 3/17/2008 5:13:27 AM
You two three are gonna have such a blast in Bansville ;)

tomic (Level 10 Lieutenant General) at 3/17/2008 5:12:54 AM

i hope this is open for interpretation cause i'll deffo do the michael-knight =D

A.B. (Level 8 Cannibal) at 3/17/2008 5:09:55 AM
Can i animate if each picture in the animation is exactly the same?

skamocore (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 3/17/2008 4:59:06 AM
:O

why is it stupid questions this week and last week it was silly questions?
