Massive Pixel Art Piece Constructed

News Details

From Drawn.ca:

"...the work of Arjan Westerdiep, who created the image in MS Paint in a process that took him 560 hours. Arjan’s website allows you to click around the entire piece and watch it get drawn pixel by pixel."

Worth a look for sure.

"No one spends 8 hours a day on his or her hobby."

Boy are you mistaken.

Gil (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 4/3/2008 10:47:50 AM
Yeah, some people need to get their math degrees here, it's not that hard.

Btw, this is a hobby project, the guy probably spent a couple of hours each week working on it, not 8 hours a day. No one spends 8 hours a day on his or her hobby. That's why it took 2 years.

Truly amazing.

560 divided by 24 is 23.3 recurring. >_>

What a delicious piece of art! I can't stop staring at it! Even being black white, it's beautifuly done.

Sabata (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 4/2/2008 10:08:59 AM
he doesn't count white because it was made on paint, and since paint's background is white he forgot to count it...actually he didn't used white, he pixeled around it leaving the parts he wanted to be white untouched.

Delfos (Level 4 Murderer) at 4/2/2008 9:31:53 AM
560 hours = 15 days (an entire day)

70 days if he worked around 8 hours a day.

Really impressive. Those water effects are perfects.

That was some amazing shit right there

Lollige (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 4/2/2008 7:53:11 AM
I remember when he was still working on it, you could mouse over to see the differences of his pencil sketches and the PA. That was really great to see!
And its still great to see now its finished!

But why does he say he used 3 colors instead of 4? He does not count white??

Nora (Level 1 Depressed) at 4/2/2008 6:36:51 AM
560 hours is not two days.
It's about a month, so it's a really nice job.

S.A.S (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/2/2008 6:02:53 AM
It's a nice enough picture, sure.. But, two years?
Come on, this can be done in two months, eat and sleep included :)

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 4/2/2008 4:34:03 AM
Really interesting. Pretty great pic too, if with a bit of spraycan-like dithering.
I also found the omission of white in the colourcount to be a bit odd, but i guess it's because it was the canvas colour, in the same way that you wouldn't (perhaps) note the canvas in your paint palette.

FrankieSmileShow (Level 6 Manager) at 4/2/2008 3:12:38 AM
Holy shit, thats awesome. Its odd though, they mention precisely the number of black, light gray and dark gray pixels, but not the white pixels... why this omission...

p..pixelism....

Blueberry_pie (Level 7 General Manager) at 4/2/2008 2:27:21 AM
Haha, love that guy's accent. We Dutch sound so funny when we speak English :)

Very impressive! He's done some other cool stuff as well. Check out the animation here - while it's not entirely pixel art (completely automated), it is damn cool to look at.

560 hours? I think Fool will do such kind of picture in a few days ;)
