Thrustburst by Umlautgames

We have finally released our first game. Helm, Lackey and I made the gfx, but let not be unknown the coder Fuzzpilz and the soundguys Ghormak and Darkstalkey for they did awesome and essential work on the game. Gogo, get the game HERE.

Alrigh... I just spent about 30 minutes playing Thrustburst, and I'm ready to start punching babies. The frustration factor of this game far outweights the fun as too many unpredictable elements compose the core gameplay. Realistic gravity and tilt-thruster controls are bad enough on their own (made worse by lack of analogue input), but combined with the constant need to accelerate and scrape against the randomly generated cave walls and dodging homing enemies and their tiny, annoyingly accurate shots just shift the experience from challenging straight into infuriating.

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/28/2008 07:52
Ah, thanks. I read the readme but just didn't catch that bit.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 5/28/2008 03:27
I one of those who finds 'this genre of games' fun. and proud of.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/26/2008 15:43
It is not hugely about the enemies and it has music, read the readme :P

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/26/2008 15:22
Maybe a few more enemies and some music would benifit.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/26/2008 05:36
pb and Vertigo: A few things you might wanna take into account. Thrustburst was never meant to be a huge project. It is based on Urthwurm as a starting point. Also we made it for ourselves to enjoy and then put it out there so that others with a similar taste could enjoy it (and many do). It definately is not a game for everyone and not everyone finds the same things fun (I would for example never be found playing Sims for example). I think you get the point.

Vertigo-Zero (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 5/25/2008 22:01
Totally agreed on that one, too! XD Its a good base, and the game could turn out cool, but this doesnt feel like the end product.

pixelblink (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 5/25/2008 19:52
well, I don't think that if they had posted it before or long after the Dino Run post that it would have made any difference. A good game always shines through despite graphics, skill, or timing. Not to say I don't see potential in Thrustburst. I just think it needs more development (and alot more thought on the fun factor).

Vertigo-Zero (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 5/25/2008 11:20
Totally agree with Pixelblink! You posted this on the wrong time XD

pixelblink (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 5/25/2008 10:33
A good idea that seems poorly executed, in my opinion. It just isn't enough to keep my interest in continuing to play it over again.... unlike Dino Run... woot!

Noet (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 5/25/2008 07:52
Saw this on your blog, pretty hard but still awesome.

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) @ 5/25/2008 01:42
Well, I must say, I've never had one zip program tell me the zip was corrupt but another one work fine?! Odd...

Nice game, good work

xXHalfieXx (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 5/24/2008 22:05
This game is difficult. But I'm slowly getting better.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/24/2008 17:07
I checked all three. 2nd was broken, I fixed it. So yeh the problem is on your end. Also where do you think those other people got the game from?

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) @ 5/24/2008 16:39
I tried all 3, but they all came up the same

Edit: Still getting the same on all 3. Is it my Zip program?

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/24/2008 15:54
Just checked. Mirror 2 on wayofthepixel was indeed corrupted, due to my shit netconnection when I uploaded it I guess. Fixed now. Why you did not try the other 2 mirrors is a riddle to me tho.

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) @ 5/24/2008 14:22
The ZIP seems to be corrupt, I get errors when unzipping the file

hotnikkelz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/24/2008 08:00
i can't run the game still.  Anybody? help?

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/24/2008 06:58
c++ and opengl

QuaziGNRLnose (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/24/2008 06:20
is this made in c++ or is it made in mmf2?

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 5/23/2008 19:33
thats why you have to crash at the beggining ;)

cure (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2008 18:12
ThroostBoorst is probably as accurate as you'll get without using the umlaut.  In my nominal, American opinion.
Good game from the little bit I've played, btw, Love the animations.  Perhaps I'll play a bit more soon.

Rynen10K (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/23/2008 16:21
I've had problems whenever I run it in fullscreen mode with the illegal operation yadda blah...

Try windowed mode, maybe?

Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 5/23/2008 16:06
4.2 km is my best looool, arrgh.

hotnikkelz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/23/2008 15:37
i can't get to play it, when i tried running it, windows xp told me i performed an illegal operation and i should go screw myself :(
Anyone else has that problem?

Adarias (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 5/23/2008 14:04
yeah, i'm waiting for some badass to post a video, because i just can't play these games (first attempt survived 14.3 seconds :P)

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2008 11:27

Aw you lucky bastard!

Good job!

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 5/23/2008 11:00
its easier to pronounce in Spanish, btw. languages aside, I Killed the core today :D

cure (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2008 10:04
Ü- As I recall, "oo" is the closest sound in the english language, but it's actually more of a long o with an "ew" twist.
Difficult to explain in text (for me anyway).

Rynen10K (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/23/2008 05:54
I am dumb and don't know how to pronounce umlaut letters...

Am I supposed to be calling this "throostboorst?" "Throwstboast?"

Please advise.

Also, fÜrthest I've gotten so far is 19km :(

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 5/22/2008 23:58
so the core is at 50k Km? huh... half way completed then.

Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 5/22/2008 22:33
Yep, runs on vista just fine.

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 5/22/2008 21:36
Gah, wont run.  Does anyone with Vista get this this to run?

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/22/2008 18:55

Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 5/22/2008 13:48
Yeah that's true. Contra 4 for example has a bit of the same thing.
It's not that long. But REALLY hard, and really unforgivable. Not really my thing.

But I didn't mention that your game does have alot of polish, and I play it sometimes even if only to drool on the graphics. And I never succeeded in finishing a game, so you deserve props for that too.

Dusty (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 5/22/2008 13:46
Heh, haven't played it yet but from the sounds of frustration it's like the old NES days. No saving, and very frustrating. Back then the only replayability was the fact that you HAD to replay it if you ever wanted to beat it.

Oh, and whatever WYSIWYG code they're using here, it completely kills right clicking(why???), so I can't even correct my spelling.

Majoris (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 5/22/2008 13:38
Very nice. I keep dieing though. Is there levels? If so, I don't know because I haven't gotten passed the first one. I know, I suck =_=

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 5/22/2008 12:36
there are two kinds of games. ones for laugh and other for cry. the later ones tend to have an extensive replay value, while the first ones gets old afetr a few smiles. in the end, ist just a matter of tastes.

And I personally enjoy a good challenge.

Skurwy87 (Level 6 Made) @ 5/22/2008 10:54
thanks for revitalizing some old memories guys! it reminds me of an old Amiga game, Dark Moon (something like that: a trivial name, tho I don't remember well), which was a clone of yet another title. whatever. the game's pretty badass, but it's hard; I can't make the counter go beyond, like, 5k score and it seems that after passing about 8k km, the gameplay thickens. . .  those little tanks are busting my balls! :)

congratulations for a job well done!

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/22/2008 07:50
Rynen10K: The 3 lights are the peril-o-meter, which is quite useless, but looks cool. It looks ahead a few screens and evaluates the danger. So if there are three lights it will be more dangerous than with 2 or 1 or none, respectively. Tho it maxes out quite fast. More of a visual gimmick really. Opacus: Each to their own :) Tho the game is REALLY short IF you get through. In that case lives, restart points or whatever would totally defeat the point of it.

Rynen10K (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/22/2008 07:04
Oh, god, I can't stop playing it! It's like Helicopter+

The only thing I still don't understand is the 3 levels of lights in the top center part of the UI... I think it has something to do with overusing the thrust? Can't tell.

Love the risky method of refilling energy >:) I figured it out by accident (should've read the readme BEFORE playing the game, I suppose).

Anyway, awesome stuff! :D

Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 5/22/2008 06:39
Can't really agree. I played a game that was pretty much the same gameplay wise about 2 years ago on some Flash game site. It's a fun concept.
The graphics are lovelly. But it really frustrated me. The whole no checkpoint, no save point continue till you die then start over thing never appealed to me. (Wow what a cool sentence) It frustrates me, and I don't find frustration fun. And I nearly always quit games that frustrate me. I play games for fun after all.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/22/2008 05:37
Cheers everyone. Surt: Yeh we know there are Joystick issues. We might fix this in an update, but until this happens (if it does) I suggest you to look at Xpadder. It's an awesome program to map the keyboard or mouse to a joypad or stick. If you use it with TB just turn off the pad support in the options. Cheers.

Badassbill (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 5/22/2008 04:29
That opening area is hot.

surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/22/2008 04:24
No joystick only operation. Need keyboard for menus and such. Annoying.

iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 5/22/2008 03:41
I really enjoyed the inventive game play. That is something that often lacks in indie freeware games. Nice, effective graphics too.

Pixel-Pusher (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 5/22/2008 00:48

I love the partical effects.

sedgemonkey (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 5/21/2008 23:58
This type of game isn't really my cup of tea, but the superb craftsmanship certainly makes up for it.  Beautiful art, gameplay (love the thrust mechanic) and sound.  Kudos to all of you talented peeps!

surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/21/2008 22:31
Nice but frustrating.

Some better indication of how far away you are from crash-and-burn while grind-charging would be nice.

Runs nicely under Wine too (just needs vc6redist).

Darth Mandarb (Level 10 Operative) @ 5/21/2008 21:47
I viewed the screenshots first (before downloading) and wasn't wowed by them ... but was pleasantly surprised when I did download it.  The motion is cool and the graphics are really nice in their non-complicated style!

The controls were a little lacking, but not horrible.  However I suck at actually playing games so it might just be me.
