Don't go frantically grabbing for your calendar—it's not April 1st. Yes, after a long two-year wait, collabs will be allowed into the PixelJoint gallery again.
Why the sudden reversal after so long? Read on...
Collabs were originally disabled as a temporary solution while some changes were made to the site to properly accommodate them. Unfortunately, the changes haven't been able to be made as quickly as we'd have hoped. It now looks like they're still a long way off, and having reevaluated the situation, we've decided that a new solution is needed.
To minimize confusion and conflict, we've prepared a set of rules specifically for collab submissions. Please read over these points carefully:
We want to hear your feedback, particularly regarding the rules and potential problems they don't address. Please let us know what you think.
No multiple submissions. All artists involved must decide on a single one of them who will submit the piece. There must be unanimous agreement.
So all contributors in the collab can submit? Or just one?
Oh. I see.
Next time he's not that busy, can't he do whatever needs to be done to allow admins to edit the site? XD
Unless he is supposed to be the only one with the power to do it.
Guys, again, we are completely powerless to make any changes to the site. That's the whole point of this post: we decided to permit collabs despite the fact that we don't have the infrastructure to properly accomodate them, or any way to implement that infrastructure. Only sedge does, and he has been and will be much too busy to do anything about it.
Yes, this means it has a number of downsides, lack of fair award and point distribution among them. But whereas before you had no options for collabs, now you can at least decide for yourself if the downsides are worth it.
I think multiple submissions would be better. Or maybe a way so you can write who else helped while submitting it, and the other person would also be warned when they get favs, comments and etc. Maybe with that even trophies can be shared. And the name of both accounts would appear next to the piece.
Shouldn't be TOO hard to do it. I mean, it would be for some less skilled coders, but for the awesome people who run this amazing site, it should be a piece of cake. You guys rock! [/haha]
:P
The way the system is currently set up, yes, just the uploader will get the trophy..
Great, I'm too lazy to start anything new...but I can improve any existing piece! Haha.
So if a collab makes the monthly top, does all involved get a trophy or just the uploader? Just the uploader, right?
Just to let everyone know, the collab piece that was in the top 4 just before is still in the gallery. It has not been taken down, it has just been resubmitted with its original date (April 2008), instead of being counted as being submitted today.
The piece can still be found here.
Nice to hear.
I would suggest that upon submission you have to enter who else worked on it.
Then everyone who did work on it gets a PM or something and they have to agree to put it up, and when it gets put up everyone who is in that list gets it displayed in their profiles automatically and there would be a list of collab people in the general info.
Just automate all that crap, will be easier for all parties involved.
done. send me a pm or post here if you find any other previously disallowed colabs.
About additional webpage layouts to accomadate collab feature: this isn't something that hasn't been discussed by us mods. I've been wanting to add a "collab" tab and "Wip" tab to user profiles since I joined. Only problem is NONE of us have ability to change coding and layout of the site; that responsibility lies on Sedgemonkey, the creator of the site. And he's quite the busy beaver(err, monkey...whatever). So this was mainly put out(finally, if I may add) by one of our new fellow mods Hatch, as we decided we couldn't wait any longer for layout features to be added, and decided we would soldier on, despite the more issues this may cause with submissions, and what not. In fact, as a fair warning, expect us mods to be a bit more harsh, as far as submitted collabs go....
I think this can be done by pointing the collab piece to more than one artist, so the piece belongs to all the artists that made it, and if it win a trophy or something, the achievment is linked in every profile page of the artists that made it.
Also to clean things up we can add one more tab to the profile page, near gallery, comments, buddies and favorites named collabs, which lists every pieces that artist made with other artists ("piece's preview": asukicco @ data in collaboration with user1, user2, user3). This means collabs can be done only by registered members.
Don't know if it works and also don't know if it's written in proper, understandable english.
Grrrreat news! 8D
I understand it's a temporary solution, issues might arise but it's definitely worth the effort.
Fairness towards the participants might require all collab pieces to be excluded from rating and awards.
Might be good to have some automatic distinguishing feature, like a different page color or layout. Green's idea of a box to check and list is good, even though I don't see the necessity of collab accounts, as long as another system exists.
Would be nice to have links in member's pages to all collabs they took part in.
(well, all this of course if within the limits of possible current tweakings of PJ!)
And please please please, re-admit this (and others)!!!
Possibility to choose (a) collaborator(s) from a member list, so they will automatically appear somewhere above the discription? Wouldn't be too hard IMO. Would be perfect if that gives them the right to edit/delete the picture.
Great news. Definitly looking forward to submitting future collab pieces alongside fellow artists to the Pixel Joint gallery. :)
Good one guys. As your still working on the changes on this site to accomodate collabs properly, I think this is a good solution for the meantime.
Not that I'm awesome enough to do a collab any time soon, but it's nice to know the option is there again!
edit:
Maybe should have a nice big [COLLAB] in the title when submitting?
Crazy idea: DO have a collab account, but have the site create it for you. Ok, let me expain. (Tweaking of PJ is going to be required for this.) When you submit a piece you know how there are checkboxes? Right, well add one more: "Collab". Once you click on that you can enter up to (X) names. And once you hit submit PJ will create a new account based on the names you entered. Let's say all the mods went and created a collab, so the new account name would be Team jalBOBHatchSkaLarBlink. Did I make any sense?
Very nice =)
Should make a special challenge for collabs once in a while, though.
