8-bit PA Design Contest

The t-shirt company WeLoveFine is hosting an 8-bit contest.
Their use of the term 8-bit is a bit loose it would seem by our standards.
None the less, it couldn't hurt to partipate in the contest.
Win up to $2500

- If you include characters from any licensed property, any such designs are subject to licensor approval and may take longer than 3 business days for approval.

wow, would have been great if at some point in the past two days i could have found out that the competition extends only to those inside the US without having to first submit a piece. Not like i had important things to do during this time that i put on hold to try and win some money or anything.

manxana (Level 3 Stalker) @ 5/27/2012 13:40

I've submitted some old zombie pixel art I made, I don't give a crap if is for hipster 8 bit shit, if I win at least $40 I'll be happy.

KittenMaster (Level 4 Deputy) @ 5/26/2012 10:10

Ooooooh dear, more than half of these designs are hand-drawn or photo pieces, and a large portion aren't even vaguely 8-bit related.

I wanted to say that a simple catchy design would probably win, but judging by the submissions there's obviously a history where that isn't the case.

"shitty metro/hipster bullshit ideals of what good pixel art is"

_Connor (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 5/25/2012 22:35

I'm assuming it will be based on some kind of shitty metro/hipster bullshit ideals of what good pixel art is,but i'll probably enter anyway. I don't see anything there that's better then the majority of pj's gallery, but again, the judges probably won't be looking for the right stuff.

7even (Level 9 T-rex) @ 5/25/2012 09:19

I wonder what these judges know about pixel art.

xodblux (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/25/2012 09:07

From what I saw in the submissions, every one (but me) here in the Pixeljoint community can outrun what was done up to now.  It would be nice to have someone from here representing what real pixel art is.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2012 14:23

Policing plagiarism is a difficult thing and everyone does it differently. We can't control other sites view on this and by posting in news we are not condoning or supporting anything. We only post pixelart related happenings members might enjoy or can just as well iognore. We have a tough standard on plagiarism in the gallery here but also allow derivative work wehere we feel its fanart and the artist is clear on it or common sense rules the day, or its obvious the intent is not intellectual theft. My own gallery is filled with this.

*Again, I personally dislike blatant plagiarism and am always against it*

Doctor Octoroc (Level 1 Depressed) @ 5/23/2012 11:53

@jalonso - The problem is that they award plagerism more often than they know because while small artists' works aren't as recognizable as large properties like Mega Man and Castlevania, they are still registered and can fetch as much in a settlement if taken to court. It's a misconception that only big comapnies can sue or be sued for a large sum of money.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2012 11:06

@ The Doctor, I totally agree but those are entries not winners so unless the judges award plagiarism then it sorts itself out.

*I would not personally allow plagiarism in any contest or anything else even as 'just entries' but self-respect is not an artistic given trait :(

@all under 18, Some rules and laws apply in the US regarding prizes with any value or wherever items are 'sold' in any manner. For example, google advertises on PJ and they have a 13yo rule regarding their advertiser contracts so PJ has to follow suit and limit memberships to 13 and older. (lots of under 13 are members by 'cheating' their profile and in legal terms if any of these 13 and under were to purchase anything via a PJ link then their parent/guardian has legal cause not to pay for said items which would then get PJ a legal letter and possible fine or something...its never happened but its legally possible.

Entering as suggested with a parent doing so for you is technically against the rules of this contest and most likely copyright laws. Enter at your own risk.

philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 5/23/2012 10:15

Why do we have to be 18? =/ too bad.

Doctor Octoroc (Level 1 Depressed) @ 5/23/2012 06:14

This is why I hate design contests like this. There are be at least 12 entries that violate copyrights - some that use art directly from the source (recolored Mega Man sprites, I'm looking at you). The people running the contest are partially to blame for basically condoning the use of copyrighted material "as long as they are approved". These 'amateur pixel artists' (only an assumption based on the quality of work I see there) don't know the first thing about copyright law and 9 out of 10 times with these sorts of contests, someone gets sued. Moral of the story, if you want a t-shirt design, PAY A PROFESSIONAL TO DO IT. Otherwise, they're going to get as many crappy designs as they get entries, and possibly more than they bargained for.

Okay, my rant is over. I just hate these sorts of abuses of the art community. You would never see this in another career field, it's degrading to the craft and turns it into a cheap commodity. How are professional artists supposed to make a living when hundreds of talentless wannabe's are working for free for the 'chance' to get some money out of it?

Merez (Level 6 Hitman) @ 5/22/2012 17:56

Unfortunately, I don't have 18, have 13. However, it would be nice to cheat here. Good luck to all participants.

Bam112 (Level 1 Intern) @ 5/22/2012 17:06

There's a plugin for paint.net which adds support for photoshop files.

Argyle (Level 6 Manager) @ 5/22/2012 17:01

Judging from the restrictions and from the 24 submissions that were there so far when I checked this morning, it's more anything that could be tied to 8-bit. Some things were just references I didn't understand with a picture that was ran through downsampling/color reduction filters and sized up, some things weren't pixel art at all but had themes that are associated with old video games. As long as it pertains to 8-bit games/graphics it seems to be acceptable. Though, I think it a shame to not have pixel art on it - moreso if it's lazy filtered images with blocky looks to them :P

AngelOTG (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/22/2012 15:07

There are a few size restrictions and the added caveat of having to create a "banner" image which will represent your work during voting. You'll need to download the Submission Kit and have Photoshop to get all of those measurements and guidelines.

Delicious (Level 10 Capo) @ 5/22/2012 14:28

Sounds interesting... So there are no real restrictions other than use pixel art as the medium? The whole 8-bit thing doesn't actually apply? Also, it can be of anything as long as it's pixel art?

AngelOTG (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/22/2012 14:19

You guys can do all the work and have your parents (or anyone over 18 you trust to not run off with your money) submit it for you. Then just have them give you the money if you win.

slym (Level 8 Ruby) @ 5/22/2012 13:47

Not old enough :(

reis (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 5/22/2012 11:23

Ahhh, I do not have 18 years :(
