Pixel artists Paul Robertson and Ivan Dixon have recreated the iconic opening to The Simpsons for a tribute video that's so fantastic, it's hard to believe it's not official. Featuring music from Jeremy Dower, an interpretation of Danny Elfman's theme, the pixelated, chippy take on The Simpsons' intro is a beautiful, stylized homage.
It also looks like it manages to pack in way more references — there's Homer's barbershop quartet The Be Sharps, Poochy, Hans Moleman as Bart, Stampy the elephant, Frank Grimes, Truck-A-Saurus — from The Simpsons than the regular intro. In the end, it devolves into the towering, ultra-weird collages that Robertson, an animator on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Mercenary Kings, is so good at. Definitely stick around until the end; this is amazing, pause-it-frame-by-frame stuff.
Of course it was his own decision. But that decision was made years ago and isn't pertinent to this video.
It's all your fault cure!!
My point is: you didn't "make" anyone leave. He chose to. If you look at the comments about his art, it's overwhelmingly positive (99%). He left for the 1% which wasn't.
So give the man some credit and let him take responsability for his choices and enough with the martyr card that people "made" him leave. What he got here was first and foremost massively positive feedback. What I find disheartening (euphemism here) is that the oberzealous argument only seems to come up when the artist in question is very talented. You don't see anyone begging for the return of a newcomer who decided to leave because people were being quote "overzealous". Fanboyism ?
Not special treatment, just civil discourse. The comment I originally posted about his palette was rude on my part, as I've admitted in the past. I believe my point was valid, but it was presented aggressively, which led Paul to respond in kind. At the end of the day, it was a petty squabble that shouldn't have led to him leaving the site, and it certainly doesn't warrant discussion years later, every time his name is brought up.
I look forward to the day we can discuss Paul Robertson's work at this site without dredging up drama from the past. This comments section is full of such banter, and very little discussion of the actual video that he and iSTVAN created.
Get over it PJ.
Oh my!! You monsters! You animals! You goddam overzealous purists!
How dare you treat him like everyone else! He should have gotten a special treatment because he's good at pixel art. That's how rules should be applied. How shocking all of this is.
To be clear. We had no issues with Paul Robertson in any way whatsoever. We simply asked that he remove a CGd gradient on a section of one submitted pixel and link to the hybrid in the description. We do this to anyone and everyone.
Highly enjoyable. Gotta love the towering pixel deity ending.
That's my point exactly, Hapiel. Many pixel artists excel in many different ways which is why it's absurd to say that PR is the best "in the business".
The comment actually comes from the original article on Polygon. :)
Oh come on Bitslap.
@Paul Robertson
If you see this please come back! They were being overzealous that time!
That is what's good about youtube comments: no censorship or pulling rank.
Pff, why compare Robertson and fool at all? They are both absolutely amazing in two completely different leagues!
And never talk about youtube comments. It is not worth it when people from all backgrounds discuss something without shame or without being able to tell who has some knowledge about the subject.
Totally agree.
Quote from the commente section: "PR is the best in the business. Not only is his pixel art amazing, the way he animates it is incredible as well.
Are you being sarcastic or are you saying this seriously?
that's quite a master piece in term of design and animation.
To be fair his pixel technique isn't anything too amazing, it's his drawing and animating skills that make him great.
And to think when Robertson came to this site, we PJers scared him away with our pixel purism and color counting.
I never watched much Simpsons but now I am watching this vid for the 10th time already :p
PIXEL ART IS NOT REAL ART :D
Love the music too <3
I didn't know it was always brought up. Sorry, buds.
