So Final Fantasy VI -- a beloved classic that contends with Final Fantasy VII for the title of best Final Fantasy game of all time -- is releasing on Steam this Wednesday. This game is the crown jewel of the SNES era of JRPG's and deserves the utmost care and respect.
What a terrible name for an article that talks about all the ways FFVI is done not right. Nice article, just a poorly-chosen name. I didn't even know VI was getting a remake, but I'm glad I didn't know - would've sucked to get excited over that.
To be honest, I'm not really a fan of the author's approach to his own HD remake either (as shown in his first article on the subject). It's not that it's actively bad, but they're essentially just upscaling and cleaning. When you draw a character at a lower resolution you have to handle the proportions very differently for readability, and simplifications and shortcuts that work in that context stop looking so good when you scale up. Honestly, while this looks fine to me http://www.fortressofdoors.com/content/images/2015/09/dq1080sprite-1.png the upscaled version doesn't stand on its own merits http://www.fortressofdoors.com/content/images/2015/09/dq1080-1.png . I think to actually "do it right" they'd have to actually fully redraw the characters. I absolutely understand why they didn't do that, since it would be expensive and time-consuming, and the result they get is adequate. But only adequate.
