The Gamedev & Art and /r/GameMaker discord channels are having a contest in collaboration.
The contest consist of making a top-down tileset, as in the classic RPGs, like Zelda and Secret of Mana.
The prize consist of Game Maker Studio 1 key and Downwell key! :D
The contest happens mainly on the Gamedev & Art discord.
And the partner discord /r/GameMaker.
Yeah, you need to join the discord to be able to participate.
Btw, you still hold the copyrights of the art you submit.
The reason we are giving GMS1 keys is because they are spare keys from the /r/GameMaker team We thought it would be a good chance for artists to have fun, and GMS1 is still a good tool for beginners that don't have a game engine on their hands.
Edit:
Btw, the deadline is September 15th
Accepted tile sizes are: 16x16, 24x24 or 32x32 pixels
And 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will get GMS1 keys
Far left is LoZ: Oracle of Ages. Mid-left is Star Ocean: Blue Sphere.
Edit, for completion's sake: Far right is Seiken Densetsu 3, mid right is Seiken Densetsu 2 / Secret of Mana.
What is the image on the left from? Is it a game or a mockup?
Also the other left one.
I thought the same thing xP And Downwell is a $3 game.
I wanted to get more info on this context in part because of the prizes. If the resulting tilesets are just something for the community to look at and aren't to be used in any project or for anyone's profit, this could be great to do just for fun. If the prizes are meant to be compensation for the tiles being used in something, then hell naw.
Discord is the new standard of communication, eishiya, get with the times!
But without sarcasm: giving out a GMS1 key when GMS2 is out (albeit in "beta") feels a little strange. If you're an aspiring game dev, I wouldn't advise getting into an already outdated system. The real irony of course, is that the reward for a tileset contest is a program with such a horrible level editor.
Is there a website or reddit thread for this, or does one have to join the Discord server(s) just to get basic info on the contest and decide whether to enter in the first place?
This is very interesting!!! Good luck to everyone who participate
