Pixel Joint Forum: Does "Hybrid PA" belong into PJ's gallery?

   I don't know if a similar thread was started and I'm in fact too lazy to check deep enough in the forums :D

but anyway!
I figured this argument would start when I uploaded my piece containing a gradient in the backdrop..
We all know that it's not quite fitting the pixelart standards. BUT... If the art is still good and contains MOSTLY like 90% pixels? Does it belong in the main PJ gallery?

I'd really like to hear people's opinions :D
Understand this thread is in no way meant to defend myself in an argument with Jal :D - the only reason why I post this is - I'd like to see Gunstar's hybrid PA works (for instance) in the main gallery. I like Snader's green gradient avatar. And I think both are legit pixel art..

SOO in my opinion we all know bonafide pixel ART from bs art. And I think if a good piece has a grad here or there it shouldn't 'disqualify' it.

I think - a gradient backdrop is none worse than filling the canvas with the bucket tool. The 'process' in fact is identical. Just don't tell me you do solid color backdrops with a paintbrush/pencil ok :D

ANYWAY - I said what I think, now I wanna hear what y'all think, agree or not.

	Wow, thanks MoD :) They are relevant indeed! Now we got at the very least Ken Fejer and Gunstar successfully practicing hybrid PA.. Two VERY prominent artists indeed. Now I hope more people speak up what they really feel - is in a natural evolution of pixel art as an art style? or is it killing the art form. Edited by Mykola - 21 February 2007 at 4:30pm

	There isnt really a debate to be had here. On one hand, if you dont have the time to do the pixel art of a large background, putting a CGed one could work, and if its esthetically as good, then you have no reason not to use it. But on the other hand, this is a pixel art communauty, where people post pixel art to get better at it or showcase their talent, so posting non-pixel art is simply pointless. Things you submit here are not made to just be good looking, theyre posted to showcase and devlop your talent at a very precise thing, pixel art. Not general computer graphics art. Also, most pictures out there with NPA elements could easily be edited to become legitimate pixel art, so simply leaving it there seems a lack of good will (that is, if you are aware of the NPA law, and what it means and all) If the gallery was a more general one with merely a direction towards pixel art, these hybrid pieces wouldnt be a problem. 	I agree with frankie+jal and all. The piece may be amazing, but there's plenty of amazing pieces that are NPA and they just don't belong here. Not because they're bad, but because they're NPA.

	I don't see why this is a debate or argument. This is PIXEL joint, point blank. They run the forum, they decided no NPA, that's that. If you don't like it, submit it to deviantART or some other gallery. lol. Edited by Aleiav - 22 February 2007 at 11:52am

	I didn't post my opinion, did I? I think the gallery should have only real, 100% pixelled pixel art. While a NPA background or shadow or whatever may be the look someone's going for, I bet that same look can be emulated in pixel art almost losslessly. Gradients over a long distance are the only exception (dithering implies a texture that may not fit well with the rest of the piece), but usually such a gradient is a background and doesn't really contribute to the pixel art.

	I agree with Aleiav. If you let one of these ugh things() in then you'll get things like "Hey why isn't mine accepted?" "It has gradients in it" "so, he got them too and it got accepted"

	Stop Whining poster = VEEEERY funny. all I asked for was opinions. I wasn't bitching or complaining. Geez. Oh and for the record, I didn't say I don't like this or that. And I din't say I think I'm better than everybody, hey let's change them rules. All I wanted was to know opinions without statements a la 'go post your stuff at da' mixed in. 	Guys, Mykola has a genuine interest in understanding this aspect of our hobby. He doesn't need to use gradients and has proven to be skilled. He may not YET understand this pet-peeve of our. Please show respect and courtesy for each other in your discussions. Use this liberally as needed --->

	selective outlining. its like using dark outlines in shadow and light outlines in light. well there's actually a few different ways of doing it but thats the main one.

	Oh thanks Jalonso! Then NPA does mean "Non Pixel Art", correct? Off topic, sorry guys. But, to be on topic, and I know I'm new to pixel art, I'll assert my opinion anyway. I don't want pixel art to ever become a dilluted artform so I hope that using real grads and auto aa never becomes accepted as true pixel, but I do think that when done right, it's a respectable hybrid. But a hybrid only.

	I certainly flip flop on pieces like this, but it's just easier on the admins if we have set rules to follow rather than making exceptions for hybrids -- no matter how excellent the pixel art might be.
