 | neota @ 5/30/2009 7:04:04 AM commented on Anubis (2003-2005) Fontes: A good critique is hard to find. Thanks so much for your clear critique!
I've just done a basic paintover with some framework lines and confirmed some of the things you mentioned. At the time, my anatomy skills were quite lacking, so I didn't necessarily interpret the lines correctly (in terms of shading and line weight) (though I wonder about the original right (our left) arm -- i think it looked wrong in the same way in the lineart)
I'll do an update as time permits.

Looking at the bug report, there has been no activity for a while.

Perhaps you could tweak the top-back area of the bird's head, IMO there would be more light blending (between green and yellow)

 | neota @ 3/8/2009 2:30:48 AM commented on Commish for CJ Fox ~ OC Pin-up A guy looking like that, I would not kick out of bed, heh :3
You should know though that he is just too pretty (eg. has a woman-like chin, not enough 'blunt' looking shading on the face, and his neck is shaded in a rounded way which you're just not going to see on a guy)
Even if he's supposed to be very pretty, those facial characteristics are beyond the realm of plausibility. I also think the dark areas emphasizing the abs (and surrounding area) are just too strong, even if that's the area you intended to emphasize.

Something about the composition seems odd to me, though.

 | neota @ 2/13/2009 4:35:25 PM commented on bouncy! This submission is 'awaiting approval', but doesn't appear in the public queue. Is this a separate phase I've never noticed before, a fix of the bug where people's own submissions show up to them in the public queue, or some other insidious bug?
I had the impression that the public queue held a pixel-art until A) it had racked up a few votes and B) a few of the moderators had inspected and approved it.

 | neota @ 2/13/2009 4:18:43 PM commented on bouncy! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/neota/alphazero/retro-info.png includes info on Amstrad CPC modes and master palette; mode 0 is widepixel, mode 1 is square pixel;mode 2 is monochrome (2 color) tall pixel and not mentioned there.
Normal resolution in mode 0 is 160x200; using overscan techniques, up to 192x264 pixels could be displayed. Mode 1 normal resolution is 320x200, overscan up to 384x264 (I think). Mode 2 normal resolution is 640x200, overscan up to 768x264 (again, I think)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_CPC#Video is also informative, though I've probably provided most of the useful info above.

 | neota @ 2/12/2009 2:28:18 PM commented on Haru Kurosawa Running Good shading and energy * could do with better depth cues on the bandages on his distant leg * it looks pretty weird that his whole body is moving so much but his head isn't moving at all really. A small amount of head rotation (side-to-side) is ocmmonly employed to fix problems like that.

 | neota @ 2/9/2009 3:16:12 AM commented on Who ordered a scary ass clown? well, it's not the fullest usage of the C64 palette.. It is really REALLY effective use of colors, though :) Reminds me of EGA pictures except with far less eye-hurting colors :)

| | neota @ 2/6/2009 6:37:32 AM commented on Pixel-Animal Cases Oh, is that what it was for? I thought it was intended for palette extraction, based on the post on Pixelation; which struck me as marginal (anybody skilled is going to be able to put together a good ramp quicker than extracting) That use is much more interesting, I want to implement this for GIMP now.

 | neota @ 1/20/2009 6:05:38 PM commented on Arrgh, I guess Hehe, people here are always so impressed by your work, Fool. Well, so am I, I just think it's good to be able to identify why. Of course your style has a lot of charm, but really I think the thing that leads people to say you're insanely good is simply good draftsmanship -- putting a sufficient amount of work into the design stage. So, more than anything else I am impressed by your discipline.

 | neota @ 1/12/2009 4:35:36 PM commented on Jewel Wyvern I'm really impressed, especially with the depth and aesthetic consistency. The far wing appears too 'full' to me and IMO the shading only partially accounts for the difference in angle to the light VS the other wing.

| | neota @ 1/12/2009 4:17:46 PM commented on Pixel Pattern icon It is a bug (as reflected by the fact it has a bug report). Maybe someone thought it was a feature, but it doesn't actually provide any value; As someone said on the bug report
"Anyone using image up-scaling *on purpose* is going to find that bilinear filtering completely ruins the look they're going for"
It breaks the appearance of existing sites also, so it is definitely a bug.
This kind of filtering is only useful for downscaling; and in this case box filtering is a more correct kind of filtering than bilinear (which is designed only for upscaling; scaling and decimation routines are quite different. ), as well as being faster.

| | neota @ 1/12/2009 3:10:35 AM commented on Pixel Pattern icon (edit function is broken) Looking at the bug, it certainly seems that the filtering of horror should be active on all platforms, but it is not. Personally I use FF3.03 and have no such problem, and I've only ever heard of Windows users suffering from it. I have difficulty telling whether this filtering is even intentional, or due to some misleading piece of Windows' API.

| | neota @ 1/11/2009 3:36:11 PM commented on Pixel Pattern icon Whenever I read about this bug it seems really silly. Probably because I use FF3 myself and have never and will never experience this, nor will anyone else on the majority of platforms FF3 runs on.
