Outstanding.. This was one of the first things I saved when I was a new guy here 10 years ago. I've always loved it, and this is such a cool remake.
Thanks for all the feedback! I fixed the random missing pixel issues on the main piece, and updated the preview to include part of the actual piece.
The shadows that game will actually be using (for trees/rocks/objects) are indeed a slightly warmer dark purple applied with a 40% transparency or so, but in the essence of time and color count for PJ I opted to go with a solid fill of the grass color here instead.
Agree on the cliff shadow color front. I was making use of a palette that I defined much earlier, and wanted to incorporate purples into the feel of the world in general. If I had to do it all over, I'd probably make an invidual ramp for the browns that went into deeper, warmer purples.
The sunnier the day, the cooler the shadows look, since their coloration comes from the light reflected by the blue sky. It's the sunlit parts that are warm on sunny days. Warming those up might help this piece, but warming up the shadows would probably just make the piece look more overcast than sunny.
Though, if you're referring to the rocks, then maybe a more neutral colour for the most lit part of the shadows might work, they are oddly purple, especially compared to the other shadows.
Awesome! I a really reall really like the water. great works on the rocks aw well. Looks like it be an awesome game :)
beautiful piece.
Just left of the tree, on the stalk thing, there's a cluster of pixels that appears and disappears. :)
IMHO, the shadows are too cold and too purple for a sunny day in an open place. You should make it warmer.
Great improvement! Funny how simplifying things tends to be the trend with artists improving at tilesets (and pixel art in general). We all seem to think details are how you make good art in the beginning.
The preview image feels... irrelevant though. Would be nice to see a glimpse of the actual art as the preview.
Amazing!
