I left that site two days ago because of the same reason.
If you browse through their Pixel Art section, you only get about two out of 24 in a page that's Pixel Art.

Yeah, Deviant Art has always been a little annoying. The whole site also runs just too slow.

As far as your piece, I think it would be nice to add some variety to the rope above the noose so it doesn't look as repetitive.

Here’s some reference: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c3/Knot-hangmans-noose.jpg/250px-Knot-hangmans-noose.jpg. Adding the small imperfections of the rope size and the diagonal lines will make it much more natural.

I also like Larwick's suggestion to anti-alias the animated role so it is smoother. As this is a stand-alone piece, there is no reason not to anti-alias it. Typically you see aliased animation like this in games because the animation has been created programmatically. In your case, you have a perfect situation where you can take full advantage of the background color.

And yeah, I agree with you - pixelart is pretty much nonexistant on dA, because of lack of solid moderation.
Plus it's rather ridiculous that you get views based not on the quality of your works, but on how well you can promote yourself by spamming other's works with comments.

I like this but fyi, the digitalart.org site only lets you submit things in jpeg form... not so good for pixel art.

seems I took it the wrong way then, apologies, although I feel you'll get much more influences browsing pixel-art only galleries (as opposed to shitart galleries full of words and nude women - oh wait, thats pixel art too) (such as c64 or amiga demo galleries) or by playing video games than looking at other's works, who were pretty much just inspired by video games/real life in the first place.

C+C, though, you could've used some more frames, and somewhat blurred the pixels inbetween swinging to make it smoother (I believe the term is sub-pixel animation, I haven't fooled with it myself). noose is great, though.

setz, wtf? i said "all the good stuff gets burried by tons of non-pixels" NOT my stuff... i could care less if anyone sees my stuff. half of my stuff has never been seen before. however, i use other peoples stuff as inspiration, and if i cant get inspiration, i cant pixel.

I agree with you 100%. All of the "pixelations" (if you can even call them that) on Deviant Art are crappy Sonic edits and "fursonas". I hate how pixel art is the one genre of art people jump into (regardless if they're good at it or not) just because practicly every computer in modern history has MSPaint. It's the equivelant of us jumping into 3D art, placing a few basic polygons, and asking for critiques. Although the animation of the piece could use the piece, the actual rope was done very well and I like the message the piece portrays. 5/5.

Sounds like someone needs to learn to do something for themselves instead of doing it for attention.

I don't disagree about dA being horrible for pixel art; last time I went to browse it, 5 minutes after I posted something the page was flooded with sailor moon doll recolors. I screenshotted it, even, I'd dig up the link but I'm lazy (see one of my journal entries on dA for it)

I agree. dA is also just crap in general. I got sick of being flamed for politely giving people constructive criticism. Not to mention the fact that the people in charge there promote paedophilia, sexism and other terrible things by banning users who try to complain about deviations containing those elements. That place is not good.

i understand you may love dA, but not everyone feels that way... please take that into account.

it is an attack on dA because my many many attempts at trying to get the pixel art section somewhat worthwhile have gone unanswered. and i spent hours trying to get that shading to look decent, so thanks for that.

I ain't much a fan of any art site but DA's at least kept me interested in art in general and in turn getting inspired to do more pixel art, and I've made some great friends (now offline too) on that place. Here I've gotten to the point where I feel like smashing my computer apart as soon as I see one of those stupid crappy 'lil dudes'. I'm sick of the sight of them.

As for this, it's stunningly average and seems more like just an attack on a website than a worthwhile pixel art. Seen you do much better things than this.

I think you've made the noose rope really well. I cant say i like the animation too much, seeing as it's on a fixed background colour, i would have used AAing and half pixel stuff to make it a bit smoother possibly. But i'm just like that.

well, dA is horrible for pixel art... 80% of the gallery contains non pixel art... and i dont mean like tools... i mean drawings, photos, vectors, and so on. not to meantion all the jpeg... its really not worth going there for the pixelart anymore

I really like the starkness of this piece. The single pixel changes in the length of the rope is a little distracting, though I guess there's no real way to elimiate that, aside from maybe just having the entire length of the rope move, rather than have it visibly pivot within the frame of the canvas.

Can you give a bit of background on this piece? I don't really pay a lot of attention to pixel art on DA so I'm not really sure what you are refering to... the prolifieration of Candybar rips being passed off as art? People uploading every shitty small sized oekaki as pixel art? Those are the only two things I've really noticed from my very brief glances at the pixel art section.
