Just an experiment for experience building up footmen for an rprts im toying with the idea of.  Various experience points can make the footman into a skilled and agile lancer, a balanced swordsman, or a sturdy guardian.

Being that these are all Men-at-Arms, commoner infantry, the differences between the subclasses are intentionally muted.

another timed exercise, took about 1:20

other units i might do:

Vassals (knights and lesser lords - experience through unit victories)
Yeoman (commoner archers - experience through successful hits)
Horsemen (commoner cavalry - experience for each charge)

each will have the dichotomy upgrade system allowing for some customization within units.

I'd really like it if they were all laid out in rows, instead of animating. I'd like to be able to study each one more closely. They look really nice. A bit higher resolution and detail level than I think we normally see in this type of sprite, and they look really good.

what it is is that the way the classes work, the footman can take different paths to the same results, because 2 of the final classes are mixes.
footman - spear - lance
footman - spear - halberd
footman - sword - halberd
footman - sword - greatsword
footman - sword - battleaxe
footman - hammer - battleaxe
footman - hammer - greathammer

and actually, warhammers were very popular in the 14-1500's, though they were much smaller and thinner than the ones show in games, a shape which would be difficult to sprite.  Historicly famous warriors who prefered the warhammer include richard III, philip II of spain, and emperor maxmillian I of the holy roman empire

the lancer....i've been thinking of adjusting to give the speed classes a tabbard and cape, though i dont know how well this would work.  id like to avoid changing the head, as id like to keep something that is highly visible to identify them all as the footies.

Lol, i can never understand about people using hammers in battle. Lovely sprites though! Absolutely brilliant, as usual.

So, the 2nd and 3rd pair, and the 5th and 6th pair have the same final forms? Just to make sure cus they look the same.

Also it may be a good idea to give the lancer something else to make him look cool and top class. Like feathers in his hat or ribbons or ..er..

Lollige (Level 11 Psychopath) at 5/24/2007 12:37:03 AM
Pretty cool, but if it was a bit slower animation it was easyer to see the differences :)

buloght (Level 6 Hitman) at 5/23/2007 10:54:27 AM
Man, I love these. Looking forward to partisan tactics.

kakikukeko (Level 5 Detective) at 5/23/2007 5:31:52 AM
except for his right arm that seems to be smaller (forearm especially)  and shorter , it looks great!
my only reproach is that it's too fast, I have no time to check  all the armors!

Mil (Level 3 Private Eye) at 5/23/2007 1:56:33 AM
Great work *o*
I would love to play a game with these little soldiers ^-^

Dang, you could probably pixel a complete replica of the Great Wall Of China in a day.  What's with the timed exercises?

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/22/2007 9:11:07 PM

Setzer (Level 8 Cannibal) at 5/22/2007 7:52:05 PM
Reminds me of ogre battle 64 with how the soldiers go into better classes and such. Nice, pure quality :D

Shawn (Level 8 Cannibal) at 5/22/2007 7:29:24 PM
Just awesome. :D

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 5/22/2007 7:22:42 PM
