Run Like a Bitch 2: Bangkok Marathon

no, RLAB 1 isnt done...  no, RLAB 2 has no plans for development.  i just wanted to try another run animation, and this was it.

just like RLAB 1, some parts of the movement were exagerated to make him run more like a...  well, bitch...

UPDATE: fixed shading errors on legs
UPDATE2: using khris' excellent edit, i have added more recoil to the landing, fixed the face, and the back arm.  also knocked it down to 12 colors
UPDATE3: fixed bounce, thanks fool

This remember me the pitfall´s game from the atari!

I like this kind of loop arts!

Hehe somthing like forest gump then? keeps running and running, eventually he will stop :p

user
Inferno.Fighter.IV (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/9/2007 20:53
I think he should stop running, turn around, and conquer his problems.  I doubt he's getting happier running.

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/9/2007 07:58
nope...  he is running from his problems...  he has alot of problems

user
drZool (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 6/9/2007 01:42
He keeps running and running, does he ever stop?

user

Great job on the running! I love it!

Impressive

This is really one of your best works Ens. You've done an excellent job creating a hard driving run cycle.

I'm on the fence about the head movement... the mechanical movement gives it an interesting effect, but I'm not sure if it's desired.

user
Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 6/3/2007 23:03

Looks cool Ens. Just thinking though that when running, before the front leg comes into contact with the ground it should straighten out a bit to absorb the impact.

I saw some of the progress of this when you linked to it a few times in #PixelJoint. Nice. That animation is butter-smooth, and you've done a lot with a rather small palette. It reminds me of Waku Waku 7.

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/3/2007 16:06
thanks fool, i updated it, much better :D

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) @ 6/3/2007 15:57
Hey, very nice=) Head jerky a bit due to the body shrinking in frames 6 and 12 - if you just lift it by 2 pixel up from the waiste it'll take care of it. Elso head in 2-nd frame from 1st  goes down and in 3 rd - up again - that  is a blinking material.=) Other than that - good work, man=)

user
Xion Night (Level 1 Thug) @ 6/3/2007 10:44
Nice, man. You definitely got that bitchy run down. Reminds me of Out of this World.

user
ESA (Level 2 Dealer) @ 6/3/2007 07:20
Wow, the movement is really smooth. Good job!

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/3/2007 07:09
Awesome job. If you ever tweak it some I'd think some of the light blue from one leg can be added to the dark blue leg.

user
Imagician (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 6/3/2007 06:18
No offense (in fact, I mean to be constructive, and I hope I am ), but still, his head moves quite jerky (which I wouldn't mind if the rest wasn't this smooth and realistic). I'm absolutely not saying to abandon the bounce, but the one depicted is not how it happens in reality. In real life, the observable bounce is more due to the whole upper body bouncing, which again comes from the knees "cushioning" the drop by buckling... Thus, his whole upper body could be seen bouncing down distinguishable on his shirts end moving down after one feet makes contact to the ground (and then up again, of course)...

In fact, contrary to that, I just noticed his waist line coming up in some strange moment... OK, but I'm getting to fussy now, I guess

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/2/2007 23:26
very good point.  i updated it a tad by making the head not counce as much and extending his body a few pixels.  seems to give the same effect, just less over the top

user
drZool (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 6/2/2007 23:02
Yeah baby! looks great! I really wanna get my animation frame inspector done and have it here on PJ if sedgemonkey will allow it. So we can examine the frames right here right now.

user
Khris (Level 1 Thug) @ 6/2/2007 20:59
I agree. After looking back at my edit, the head bounce is a bit extreme. I don't think you should take out the head bounce, but, I think a more subtle one would probably work better.

user
Imagician (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 6/2/2007 20:21
I really like the animation, so don't get me wrong, but there's one thing that really bothers me now: having your head bouncing as jerky as this would (besides the fact that it's fairly unrealistic) really soon cause some spinal trouble...

user
iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 6/2/2007 19:07
Very smooth! I normal only use half the frames for walking/running on account of me being lazy.

I knew this was by you before I even clicked it. I think I see a resemblance in the character's face to that of yours. Which would make you a bitch.

user
Khris (Level 1 Thug) @ 6/2/2007 15:30
Ah, very cool. I especially like how you merged the two styles to end up with the face he has now.

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/2/2007 15:03
tweaked it using your edit as a reference.  looks 10X better.

user
ZeroFive1 (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 6/2/2007 14:31
I love it.

Just amazing.

I think he should go up more, but that's just me.

user
enemyorz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/2/2007 14:23
cool.  he doz run kinda slow bu t i like

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/2/2007 14:16
oh thanks, that edit helps alot.  i will open it up and examine the frames.  i may have to update this yet.  thanks again

user
Khris (Level 1 Thug) @ 6/2/2007 14:06
I made a fairly quick edit, I hope you don't mind. http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/2175/asdfasdfvz3.gif
I guess I would've saw/posted this earlier, but I never caught the WIP thread. Oh well.

Anyways, I thought that the movement was all mostly great, but the speed and timing was a bit sluggish. I just about halved the rate at which the animation plays in an effort to make it look more realistic. Along with that, physical movement changes I made deal with the head/upper body and his left arm. On the arm, I changed how much shows. At that angle, even though he's throwing his arms fairly far back, your body would be in the way of most of your arm and you'd only see just the elbow and shoulder poking out at most. On the head and upper body movement, I did some quick copy/paste edits to add some up and down motion upon impact. I agree with B.O.B. on the face, so the last thing I did was try to apply the more realistic (but simple) style of rendering you have for the body to the face.

I hope that all came out right. Anyways, good stuff!

"It's official, Ens. You have defeated me in the run/walking animation department."

you made my day.  thanks!

and thank you to everyone else as well

user
The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 6/2/2007 13:20

It's official, Ens. You have defeated me in the run/walking animation department. This is great. It looks so smooth, too. The limbs work well. My favorite part of the motoristic skills, would be the way the arms stretch out so naturally as he takes each step.

The face kind a bothers me, but that's probably because I've never gotten used to eyes being designated as a near-white single pixel, next to a single dark/black pixel. Although it looks more like a calm jog, rather than a "running for my life" type deal, it still works. It's a goodin'...

user
Imagician (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 6/2/2007 12:24
Reminds me of Flashback or Another World... Maybe because of the clothing color scheme (black top, light pants) or the scarce shading (or the smoothness of the animation... take it as a compliment). Guess it's Lester's evil twin due to the goatee

user
PixelKiwi (Level 5 Soldier) @ 6/2/2007 11:21
Very nice smooth animation, I always have trouble with walk/run cycles.

user
Mykola (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 6/2/2007 11:10

he doesn't 'skip like a queer' (© ens) anymore lol.

yeah and bangkok marathon will be totally the theme of one of my next drawings hahahah

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/2/2007 11:08
shit.  thanks for pointing that out.  damn insomnia messed with my head...

user
Feron (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 6/2/2007 11:05
one thing that bother me, is the shading on the pants doesn't folow the shading on the shirt. They should have a shadow down the back like the shirt, one more dark shade would make this better. oh yeah, excellent references, the wireframe too...

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/2/2007 10:55
feel free to steal the wireframe if you wish

user
Gil (Level 6 Major) @ 6/2/2007 10:52
Great. I'm saving this as a reference
