That is just cool. I love how you gave it that SNES-ish style to it.
I dont know why I'm saying this but I felt like this pic sprouted off a patch of consciousness that was not supposed to be found O_O that purple fog has a strange effect on me!
The primary function of the nebula is actually a sort of damaging environmental hazard, akin to acid/lava in the Metroid games. The ship takes damage if it flies through it, unless it gets an upgrade that allows it to withstand extreme heat.
Sure, sure, the nebula will look a little strange moving as quickly as the rest of the background and yet affecting the ship...but who ever said games had to be realistic?
@ Manupix, Don't know yet how the nebulas work in-game. I think their main function is to break up the somewhat repetitive BG starfield. Its a DS screen so it would never be intirely onscreen.
This boss moves quickly and constantly so the 50/50 doesn't show until the explosion happens. I see what you mean tho. Its meant to be a cheap FX.
More cool! Great explosions!
I just have reservations about the dithered transparency at the back of the boss.
And a biiig one about the nebula (again), but that's a crit for the game, not the art.
Great use of color. That big explosion really pops.
