Looks more like cobblestone than cracked dirt. A tree silouete against the stones- er, dirt, unintentional but leaving it-might help balance and convey the wilderness. At first look I thought it was some old London street.
The central composition might be part of this issue - you could try moving the figure down and to the left or right.
Dither isn't the best way to convey the fading-into-darkness effect either.
Agreed. Some black is a nice use of negative space. This much black looks like an unfinished canvas. Personally, I'd crop to around 300x100 and center the light, but that might be a bit TOO conservative on the black.
As for the pixels, I'd do two things to it. I'd alter the shading to show a more stark contrast betweenlight and dark(probably by using less midtone and more highlights and shadows to define the form and better shwo how the lantern is the only light). The other thing would be to shift the colors, increasing the contrast of everything while dropping it's saturation. Another thing you may wish to keep in mind is how you highlighted the stones. You put the highlight as a line on the top of the stones, which makes the image seem a little flatter. Just think about the image in 3D terms, with the lamp hanging over it, not on at the top of the image.
If you'd like, I have an edit that illustrates what I'm trying to say. I won't post it without your permission though, so if you'd like to see it just ask :)
The idea is great, but i would put there some funny/black point. Like hes stumbled upon a godzilla footprint or the desperado is behind him.
I dont like the style very much though and the ground is plain wrong - not shaded.
