Hey guys!

Did a little pixel experiment. I wanted to try if painting in full grayscale, reducing the colors and then clean up would be an effective way to paint larger areas of pixels...

The piece itself is kind of poinless but it was interesting to try it out.

I began with the outlines and cleaned them up. Then I added the flats. I selected eatch area inside the outlines and then painted the values with a soft brush with 20% opacity. After that, I used "Posterize" to reduce the shading levels to a reasonable amount.

When I got the values down, I just replaced each shade with a color and finished it with some texture. The texture looks a bit sloppy but still better than just plain fields. I didn't use dithering since... Well, I don't like the looks of dithering :p

Cool. I personally don't have an issue with the reduction technique as long as it's sufficiently cleaned up (which this does seem to be), just wanted to make sure! And the gif is interesting, though of course not quite the same, but still neat nonetheless. And good luck on future stuff, I'll keep an eye on you, I like the stuff!

Also, um, SacreDoom was wondering what your reference WAS. Like, a link. If you made it yourself (probable if those are your hands) it's probably not uploaded, but I'm pretty sure that's what SacreDoom wanted to see. We often ask to make sure you're not colorreducing someone else's work, just to make sure. Credit where credit is due and such.

 Badassbill,

Thanks!  I used my own hands for reference so I guess I have deformed hands lol!

 Frost Butt,

Can you elaborate?

 SacreDoom,

Of course, always use reference!

 Thank you Benjiro!

Wouldn't call it perfect though :P

 Hey Ego

Thanks for the critique. I'm still quite new to pixel art :)

I don't have a wip gif but I made this which show how it was done http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22455944/steps.gif
(Didn't include clean-up step since it takes a lot of time.)

I was aware that "pixel purists" maybe wouldn't be too fond of this technique :p But hopefully someone think it was helpful or inspiring to take it further...

The left thumb looks very short/squashed. The rendering on the gun is nice though.

texturing is a bit weird

You wouldn't happen to have a WIP animation, would you? From the look of stuff, it looks hand-pixeled enough, but I'd still love to see it. We're pretty distrustful of reductions 'round here, though as I said I think this is refined enough to be okay.

As for tiny crits on the piece itself, two things. The first is a color issue - the blue color on the revolver right above the black is too dark, it melds with the black. Lighten it up a bit, find a better midpoint. The other thing is some major banding problems on the handle of the revolver where it meets the hand. Here, I boxed the most trouble spot: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/maxdxam/revolverbandinghelp.png

I like the left hand a lot, and the hand colors. Anyway, nice job!
