Some visitors go unforgotten, regardless of the years that pass our meetings by - their feet rest still upon our doorsteps, though their greetings and their faces have long fled upon the wind. So it is that even now, some forty years along the road, I hear their voices at my window and the ready roll of coin, and that most difficult of siren songs, that of a dream you've walked on.
Even now I smell the smoke and know the creaking of the carriage underneath me, and I feel the crumbling parchment as they tear it from my hands. My brow, now creased, is wet with ancient floods, my heart filled up with distant days which none will ever know.
They took from me my work, my every aspiration - and from them I stole that dearest, direst motivation, that cold, immortal fire, revenge.
- Dr. Elias Morrel.

An old environmental sketch for a game concept I've been planning out.  This was the second piece of pixel art I ever made.  As an experiment in color, and because I had not yet decided what sort of palette I was going for with the game itself, I decided to use DawnBringer's 16-bit palette as a starting point.

Looking back, I have a few complaints with this piece. The colors are a bit too vibrant for the story itself; the gateways don't give off quite the right feeling of foreboding to me, and I feel like there's something wrong with the ocean waves in the background, among other things.  That said, it was both experimental and an early piece, so I can't really expect perfection.

The game's story is loosely based on the Breton legend of Ys (sort of a western-European Atlantis, for those not in the know), and takes place in the fictional Kingdom of Aldoir. Basically, there was once this city ruled by a wise, just king, who, while in his travels, married a mysterious sorceress.  Said sorceress gave birth to a daughter and then disappeared, and said daughter went on to unlock the city's floodgates and destroy the whole dang place. Or so the legend says.

There are stories along those lines floating around all over, but very little of the truth has been made clear - hence people like Professor Morrel, who devote their academic lives to finding out just what happened in this province of Aldoir so very long ago. Dr. Morrel once came very close to discovering something groundbreaking, something so unexpected that it would have turned the entire study of the Aldoir Ruins upside-down. Unfortunately, his patron - that's 'sponsor' in contemporary speak - absconded with the artifacts he needed to prove his findings, thus ruining his academic credibility.

Forty years later, his patron has returned - and, strangely, appears not to have aged a day. Though he is understandably suspicious at her arrival, and worried by the presence of her mysterious associates, the call of the ruins still reaches something in his heart - and he's tempted by the opportunity to set old wrongs aright. What will he find? Your guess is good as mine.

I'm glad you liked it.  Kind of an odd piece, since I didn't exactly plan it out in advance; just started doodling.  I'm going to have to cut back on that 'tropical paradise' feeling as the devlopment continues, though; there's a definite seriousness to the game, and I wouldn't want a cheerful style choice to get in the way of that.

Yeah, the colors were a bit odd in this one, especially since it was my first experimentation with a limited palette.  Honestly, I agree that this piece would have benefited from darker colors, and I'm hoping to use a more varied approach to color selection when I finally get around to the real design for the game.

Sweet, I'm glad this is at 100% now. I think it looks much better. I think the pinkish hue you used for the rocks is sort of an interesting colors choice. I wouldn't really call it good or bad. I feel like your entire piece would benefit from having a few darker shades added though. It would make the bright areas seem brighter, although it already seems like a tropical paradise the way it is. I look forward to seeing more pieces like this in the future.

Edit: Just noticed you were using DB's palette. I haven't used it myself yet, so I'll have to check it out. You shouldn't be afraid to use a couple of your own colors though.

Ok, I see it now.

Should be fixed; here's hoping, anyway.

Should be fixed now; it's showing up properly for me, at any rate.  Now it just needs approved.

That's a system glitch, try again. Even waiting for approval, the file should be visible. Make sure there isn't any strange character in the filename.

However you'll also have to change the preview, it's all messy thanks to improper resizing ;)

In keeping with Guskooyman's suggestion, I edited the file and replaced it with the smaller version I intended to post.  Unfortunately, the new file is still awaiting approval for some reason.  Try again later, perhaps.

 No image for me.

Many thanks!  I don't think it's the music; DawnBringer's palette is quite cheerful.

Understood.  I believe I actually uploaded the wrong file; I exported two separate versions of this piece, one at 200% normal size for deviantart, the other at normal size.  This should be fixed by the time you read this comment; I apologize for any difficulties there.

EDIT: I've updated the file, but the system still hasn't accepted it; should be set to the proper size in a matter of hours.

You should upload this at 100% or x1 view. People can always zoom in, but they can't zoom out past 100%.

Beautiful.  This is fantastic for your second piece! Your right though, there is no real sense of forebodingness, in fact I think that this gives off a very peaceful feeling (though that could be due to the music I am playing right now).
