Looks like it was fun! Nice metal and glass palette, good volume portrayal, good silouette. Nice detail on the wires.

This is great! I love the space background, and the game over image is really catching. Played the game for a while, too, up to the final boss :)

Some of the sprites are hard to read in places, some parts have too much going on that reads as noise. You should make another pass at them, sacrificing detail for readibility.

Nice adaptations though.

Great mockup and old-school feel. The player characters look great, and the background is old-school simple but works nicely as well. However, the enemy character, his weapons and the bullet look uninteresting and out of place... Playing with the color scheme, pose, and all around character design would help.

Great ambiance and good capture of the original's feel, with a clean and simple style.

The initial portrait looked odd, an odd mix of genders. The current one's sexual identity is much clearly defined.
The raised eyebrows do give the eyes a somewhat feminine/hollywood plastic surgery look. Men, regardless of age, have lower brows.
The lighting on the face looks odd, doesn't help defined the shapes, looks a bit random and inconsistent. Try using the shading to develop more his forms.

Pretty nice colors you have for the hair (and for the other hair palettes you've shown at Pixelation).
Good luck with your project, your persistance is inspiring :)

Wow, i really like the perspective effect you've achieved on the background (best looking at the top left quarter of the image). But the ground looks out of perspective, i suggest making it look like the observer is closer to the ground (even adding a closer layer to the observer, like in platform games where there were several parallax layers, some further and some closer to the viewer).

This one looks pretty good. I think the harsher palette looks better on this angular type of face, the fat man's is a bit too harsh for a smooth and round head, specially the darkest shade.
Lots of personality on them though :)

Looks pretty nice, great expression, and dynamic look on the pose. I'd recommend you use a few more colors to smooth out the transition between the metal shades, carefully not to smooth it too much and lose the metallic effect, but enough to give it a cilindrical shape look.
Hands could move away more from his body. Like increasing the size of the hand closer to us, to appear even closer :), and moving the other hand away more from his body.

Things i think would improve:
With that big a breath, i think it should move it's head up and back. Take a deep breath and see how your upper body shifts back as your lungs inflate :)
As he inhales, i think the fold below his mouth should disappear, like when a fat dude sticks his belly out he tends to get more rounded and show less folds :)
The hat could have a better defined volume, by better usage of lighting to show the cilindrical shape.
Shadows on the back of the slug should change as the body shape is changed with the lungs inflating.
You have a low contrast shading on the body, but go for complete black on the hat. That steals attention from the body and makes it a bit harder to read. You should attempt to keep the whole palette at the same level, using more contrasting colors only to grab the attention of the viewer to a specific place.
Hope this is helpful!

It's cute, but they both look like girls... maybe make the boy's palette have more contrast, and add less round features?
Hope that the person this was meant for enjoyed the present :)

I very much like cloud with the eye, great palette, very smooth and appealing. The top part looks empty though, kind of spoils the effect a bit.

I think you should make different shades of the same color vary: do not keep every green tone as pure green. Play with it a bit, pick green tones that are mixed with yellow, blue, purple, etc, and also choose colors with different saturations (with a bit of grey mixed into them). Also, you should practice drawing a bit of real life folds, it helps when you're drawing clothing.
Anyways, this looks pretty sweet :)

Great shading on the face, and good palette. Anatomy is a bit off though, and the eyes are a bit too cartoony. I'm not so sure about the letters, but it does give this a more unique feel...

Somehow reminds me of Ghostbusters. Pretty sweet sprite :). The lower gun looks a bit subdued against both the bright yellow costume, and the other gun which stands out more.

Play with palette, try to go for more contrast. Increase the difference between each color, and make each color not a pure pink, but make some tend more towards yellow, or blue, or purple, or orange, or red, while trying to keep the look of the whole rabbit pink.

Your father has a Lamborghini? That must suck :P
Shading looks good on some places, but random on others. You should check reference (go look at the car again, take a picture!) to get this right, the final effect will compensate the effort. The reflection on the glass seems random, doesn't follow a realistic pattern or lightsource.
Also, clean up the jagged lines, they don't look right. You can do this by attempting to round the line more so it follows a more fluid and smooth curve, or by carefully adding anti-aliasing (using colors to blend the jagged parts).

I agree with you that they don't read very well... at this size you should be bold and attempt some strong hue-shifts and try to up the contrast significantly. It's usually better to keep checking out if it reads well at 1x zoom, usually if it does at this size then you're in the clear at other sizes.

Also, i'd attempt some redesign on some of them, i can't quite tell what some are. Make it painfully clear :)

The scene design looks good, and the lighting on the character from the moon looks nice, but i'm not too fond of the colors you used. Since it seems to be a realistic scene, I'd go for less saturation on the sky, character's clothing and city lights, and try to improve contrast a bit between these things.

user
Turbo @ 7/23/2007 14:46 commented on Invaders
With better defined lightsources, a more contrasting and interesting palette (with "hue shifts"), with perhaps more colors (but not going overboard, using them scarcely only when needed), this would look much better.
