I picked 3 basic colors, 3 shades of each, and tried to interchange them alot. while still having at least one area where just those three are used, and one area where all three are used, and basic jumping around.

I think if you want to try out a new shading technique you should do it in a much bigger piece so you can really show it off. This guy you mostly only notice the outline/shape, not the shading technique.
