Thanks! I try not to be too schticky when it comes to my art, but I couldn't help it with this one. Sometimes the art needs a little boost to get it there and I thought, 'why not?'. Plus, growing up with vhs, it's just comfy, ya know? I have another 'space horror' inspired piece in the works that I've already planned I want this type of effect in part of. I guess this was kind of a practice piece for that.
There was a recent piece within the last couple months that used it in the preview. It was really good and made me want to try it sometime. I guess I got to sooner than I thought I would. I'll have to find it again.
Nice job with the distortion effect.
I understand... It gets out of control really quickly if you're not careful!
No I already have a different project underway on my wife's request!
It might just have to go in the project queue... Unless you beat me to it!
> If you like campy 80s splatter horror
Yep. I really, really do. Will look for razorback! Is that the beginnings of a new piece pixel art..?
I gotcha. I have seen clips from both those movies, but never seen either all the way through. In North America Braindead was called Dead-Alive. I think they were trying to go after the evil dead/zombie movie crowd with their marketing. I want to go find them now! Thanks for reminding me they exist.
If you like campy 80s splatter horror, you might like an Australian movie called Razorback. It's basically Mad Max meets Jaws. Lol! Except instead of a shark it's a giant wild boar. Hahaha! It's really weird and campy, but there's something amazing about the atmosphere of the whole movie. It'd make a great atmosphere for some pixels in fact.... Hmmmmm, I wonder...
Not really much australian stuff that I remember. Maybe I just didn't realise? We just had 80s hollywood re-runs. I haven't been back to NZ in many years but I'm pretty sure they're still running the same ones, just less often! Haven't heard of The Castle, sorry!
I bet you would like the old Peter Jackson films; he's a New Zealander and before he did big budget stuff like lord of the rings he did really funny low budget B grade movies like Braindead and Bad Taste which are much more entertaining! Other than that, New Zealand hasn't really produced anything very exciting since.
Yup, 85 unite! . It is weird how some movies are so different as you watch them again and again over the years. I feel for you having to watch things over and over. My dad is a movie buff and would watch things over so much that he could, no WE could, quote the whole thing. Now I find myself doing the same. Also, excuse my ignorance as I know you're not Australian, but did you get any Australian cinema in New Zealand? I ask because one of my favorite movies is "The Castle" starring Michael Caton which is Australian. I don't know of anyone besides my sister and I that have ever seen it.
I actually looked up that very same clip after I posted my message! It does look interesting!
You were born in 85, too? Hullo!
I guess I never heard of it because I'm originally from New Zealand where all our television was just re-runs of the same American movies our television station got on the cheap and repeated every year. Although we did have classics like Predator, Commando, and Aliens, if it wasn't on our re-run list we wouldn't really get exposure to it. At least now I know!
Hey, I just noticed you were born in 85, too. Cool beans. . How have you never seen Slap Shot?!
Thanks! I figured it was appropriate as to when it came out, but mostly the first time I saw it. Sort of a nostalgia boost to the heart, you see. .
It's most definitely a hockey movie. It's sort of a satire/drama disguised as a raunchy comedy based around the fact that the smaller leagues we're less popular for the hockey than they were for the violence and that the guys and gals surrounding the sport had to be nuts to be involved in it. .
The scene this was taken from can be seen on YouTube. I probably could've put that in the references. Here you go. They have potty mouths jsyk.
Nice! That VHS effect is very well done. It must have been challenging to fit such a dense picture in such a small canvas. Is it a hockey movie?
I've never heard of Slap Shot; I'll have to give it a watch some time!
Thank you! There was a lot of inspiration for this one and I'm sure try to the tracking effect again in another piece. I have an idea for a space-horror piece that will hopefully have the same vibe as that movie "Europa Report". That's the plan anyway. It'll look like video recovery from the view of an astronaut that I'm trying to incorporate the effect into. In truth, the effect actually was much easier than it appears. But don't tell anyone I said so.
