Just having some fun trying to make a Simon-the-Sorcerer-esque background. I took the colors directly from Simon, and tried to match the pixelling methods for the game. Hopefully it will have at least some resemblance haha. One thing I noticed was the extreme AA.
(Also there is no 'randomness' or 'scrappyness' here, every pixel was placed with love and care)

I have always admired Simon the Sorcerer for it's awesome and detailed pixelled backgrounds and wanting to try the style. In my mockup everything is originally textured pixel by pixel (I copied nothing from the game, haha, not implying it could have been since mine obviously isn't as good as the game graphics).

Here is my poor attempt at a WIP animation. I started with a pencil sketch (drawn 1cm = 20pixels), scanned it, desized it to 320x134 and traced the pencil lineart with black pencil tool lineart in a new layer.

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/434/imitationwipae1.gif

The main objective, I guess, was to create a new Simon the Sorcerer location that might have fitted in the game. I'm not sure if I succeeded (probably not). I added my own sprite characters (not entirely simon style, more my own thing).

Some screenshots from the game:

---------------
The location: Bandit Lookout, you come in search of him in the adventure, but he is nowhere to be seen. You want information from the bandit, maybe he is in that tree?

Very nice. Fine oldschool adventures games climate(mood?)

Very convincing imitation -- impressive. Really takes me back :-) Keep up the good work!

Being a great fan of first simon the sorcerer game, I really liked this one. Menu doesn't look similar to the game though. Congrats.

user
Elwin (Level 5 Sniper) @ 11/24/2007 05:20
Your amazing at making trees O_O As X-wing said, the menu could maybe be a little more detailed. ^^

user
X-wing (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 6/11/2007 12:26
I loved it... from middle to upside. You could improve more details on the menu, you just made a black stripe and filed the rest with blue. But the forest and the guy are really good! Congratulations!

stenlik (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/7/2006 21:25
Wow, that's cool. It's a pity that nowadays all adventures are boring 3D craps generated by super-ultra designer tools.... I was adventure fan(I'm stil!!!) and all really love such graphics. I think I'm gonna install and play Monkey Island once again...
Good old times:(

user
Dominus (Level 1 Rookie) @ 11/25/2006 06:44
WOW!! Simon is one of my fav games ever, and the graphics are totally awsome. You did a great job! instant fav!

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 9/17/2006 05:14
wow, pixeling the trees and leaf must have been a hell of a lot work.. pretty awesome

only crit is that the bright sky in the background doesn't fit to that dark forest for me.. shouldn't there be a bit more light coming through the trees on the right? =>

Remarkable work, looks just like the real Simon the Sorcerer which I again played this week. You have achieved the same kind of depth as in the game, love it, epsecially with the trees in the darkness. I think what buloght is trying to do (as he said) with the shadowless-guy is that a lot of oldskool adventures (most) doesn't have shadows for the characters. Neither does simon. So there is no fault with that.

user
inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) @ 9/9/2006 11:37

Tree is fading into ground texture... And the picture still has some lack of depth, mostly because of the tree. And I don't like the thing that the character is actually floating -- means it has no shadow...

I really love the 1st 2 Simon the Sorcerer games, as soon as I saw the preview of this I thought 'Simon the Sorcerer', so I guess you achieved your goal.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/7/2006 03:45
Thanks guys . I think i will do an update in the gui in the future, since it's the general opinion haha.

I wanted to make the wood the different colours but then I noticed that each background in simon has a set palette for each room. In the towns the woods would be more red, but in the woods the wood itself is the colours used for the trees, so I felt compelled to follow suite

user
Wayuki (Level 9 Blue Diamond ) @ 9/7/2006 03:42

Whoa, déjà vu! I just finished playing Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2 last week using Dosbox. :D

You did a great job capturing the style of the background. I immediately catched the reference to Monkey Island as well, which is especially funny, because they tried to mimic the LucasArts games in style and gameplay with Simon.

I like your character better than Simon... he seems more detailed. I think it could do with a more intricate HUD design, though. Right now it's a big empty block compared to the background. Also, I liked it when the nailed on piece of wood was a different color in the animation. If the piece of wood has any signifigance in the game, I would have kept that color.

user
Stitchy (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 9/6/2006 18:15
Daaaaaamn, just look at that background. Incredible, my friend. :o

user
calacver (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/6/2006 17:03
I wouldn't exactly describe this as nice, but exceptional buloght. Again amazing work from you. The details are brilliant, a true simon bg.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/6/2006 17:02
Well I was hoping the character stands out from the bg. I cannot give him a shadow since he moves around and as the main character in the 'unexisting' adventure game.

user
Nomade (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 9/6/2006 16:45
Nice.. but i dont think the character is actly in this scenery.. I mean, it looks like you just pasted the image of the char on the scenery.. You could use some techniques like shadowing to make it a part of the sceneyr

user
rats (Level 1 Gangster) @ 9/6/2006 16:24
You've got the style down, man. I've never seen someone crazy enough to replicate simon the sorcerer style. You're crazy man

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/6/2006 16:14
haha, darth. I could be persauded, but darn you are doing such an amazing job on the backgrounds, I'd be scared I'd mess up the consistency.

user
Darth Mandarb (Level 10 Operative) @ 9/6/2006 16:09
Bloody fantastic work man!

I agree with Big Brother about the contrast between the tree-line and the sky-line but other than that I don't have a single complaint!

Are you SURE I can't talk you into doing some backgrounds for Amulet of Kings?? :)

user
DivineDominion (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/6/2006 14:12
Cool WIP animation! Really like the style. The UI needs enhancement though; I think that a pixelated UI would make the image itself a lot, well... like a "smoother" experience to look at or so :)

user
milkyjon (Level 4 Murderer) @ 9/6/2006 07:44
I love simon the sorcerer. I kinda wish that they kept the actors voice out of the 1st game throughout all the sequals though. errrrm....cant remember his real name (rimmer out of Red dwarf). If they released an update with  these graphis I'd be a happy bunny. Well done.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/6/2006 05:18
Just like me to only respond to the last comment.

Thanks jkilla and 2dgamers!

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/6/2006 04:16
Thanks ian .

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 9/5/2006 23:11

Way to capture the rich textures of the original! That's some fiddly detail work.

One small crit - The scene seems a bit abrupt with the stark blue sky on the right and then the balck between the distant trunks. Perhaps you could blend it a bit to ease the contrast, kind of like how you have the trunks gradually fade to black in the distance.

user
jkilla (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/4/2006 00:41
great work!

user
2dgamers (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 9/3/2006 18:49
Very nice! It looks just like the original game. I love your style!

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/3/2006 18:23
Thanks for the kind comments .

user
ManningKrull (Level 9 Executioner) @ 9/3/2006 12:26
I'm completely in awe of the bark texture and the modelling on those trees. Amazing. I love the contrast of the dark forest and the bright sky; that's a tough thing to make look natural, and you did it.

user
Afflict (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/3/2006 12:16
Fav 5/5 and on that note, Superb!!!

user
Dysposin (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 9/3/2006 02:24
Sweet... Love the background :3 Only problem is the difference in quality between the inventory and the background. Good job!

user
Evil-Ville (Level 1 Thug) @ 9/3/2006 01:21
The icons are much better than the text. Good job

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 9/2/2006 21:15
You've done it again
Looking at this zoomed in was a true delight.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/2/2006 15:19
Thanks Anlina

I just removed the text and added simple icons, I don't really want the attention to be on the gui, it's just there for completeness.

user
Anlina S. (Level 6 Manager) @ 9/2/2006 15:04
I knew this looked familiar!

I think Simon the Sorcerer was one of the first computer games I ever played with any seriousness. You did a great job of reproducing the feel of the game.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/2/2006 14:15
Haha, no they can blame me, I made my own fonts. I'm gonna try and fix it, though I did try and imitate simon's font AA, but I think I failed. Thanks evil-ville

user
Evil-Ville (Level 1 Thug) @ 9/2/2006 14:10
The font is from Simon the Sorcerer so you can't really blame buloght for that.

user
Filax_666 (Level 6 Hitman) @ 9/2/2006 12:05
That lettering is awful but the rest is just beautiful...

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 9/2/2006 11:22
Thanks guys . Yes, defenitely Monkey Island reference, I just wanted any inventory item I could think of haha. Thanks tremulant, I'll try to fix the text.

user
0xDB (Level 5 Detective) @ 9/2/2006 09:55
Yay, I played through each of the 2D Simon The Sorceror games at least three to four times. This would fit in perfectly. Is the Voodoo Monkey Doll a hint to Monkey Island?

user
Tremulant (Level 1 Gangster) @ 9/2/2006 09:43

That is sexy, pure and simple. The background is mind blowing, the character is nice and clean. My only copmplaint : it's obvious how much care went into the placement of each pixel in the background and character, which makes the minor jagginess of the large text really stand out. Maybe do a bit of aa'ing there, and this would rank (in my books) beyond perfect. The background is really inspiring.

user
Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 9/2/2006 08:27
beautiful work my man, that background is just...  its...  beautiful!

user
Evil-Ville (Level 1 Thug) @ 9/2/2006 08:23
This is the best work by you so far in my opinion. Probably because there's less black outlines.
