@Jumpanaatta: Thanks for constructive criticism - this is what I was looking for! I agree with you on everything - and most of all: it's hard to do art without references.
I like the sketch! With the refined version the perspective on the bridge support beams has drifted a bit and the church in the back is kind of wedged in there so it loses a bit of the flow and dynamicism in the sketch version... on the other hand I enjoy the dithering you've done with the water and background.
I also often enjoy working without reference but sometimes I search for it as the picture starts to progress. For the refined version you might consider using some reference for the bridge to make the details more convincing, or you could go even further with the abstraction.
The pixels are pretty good I think, there's always possibilities to fiddle with them but really I don't think good pixel art depends that much on the pixeling. It's more about the fundamentals: composition, contrast, use of color and such. Focusing on pixel rendering techniques is then something that can turn a solid picture into a really fantastic one.
The dithering is great on all the background and I like the tilted perspective. A bit more detail on the bridge might be nice and the sand stands out a little bit for me, although it makes the image more interesting overall.
I like them. Also I like the sketch the dynamic of the sketch!
You're welcome! There are many ways to use reference so it's good to try different approaches.
